It’s all a conspiracy. The YouTube reviewers can’t say anything negative about Apple. That’s why no one will review because they’ll lose their Apple Pass and never attend WWDC again.
Joke, right?

Ordering just started today. How do you review something that no one has yet?
Apple sends review units to YouTubers and journalists early, so long as they sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) which has a date after which they are allowed to post their reviews.

This allows reviewers to have time with the unit, prepare a proper review – or at least a proper ‘initial impressions’ – and post it, without scrambling to get everything done haphazardly.

The problem is, as is mentioned by others, Apple tends to only give early units to those they know will be kind in their reviews. Early reviews typically won’t be fully objective…

reviews come out when it's too late to cancel
You can still return it though.

But I agree. The reviewers who get it earlier will never say anything against any apple product otherwise they won’t get it to review anything in advance the next time around.

They are all muppets if you ask me. I don’t watch any and I don’t put any like or subscription to those channels because I don’t want to contribute to the YouTube algorithm pushing them.

While I agree somewhat, it also seems to depend on the channel size and just the level of social clout they bring with them.

Renee Ritchie, insightful as he can be sometimes, won't get to say anything negative really or he's off their list for sure.

MKBHD is huge and gets to dish out criticism as long as it's tasteful. He's valuable to them as long as he publically stays on the Apple platform.

Linus Tech Tips is on the ********, has a terrible relationship with Apple and actively try to be as critical as possible as their kind of mission statement (which can be good for product improvements down the line). Their Apple channel isn't getting stuff early, that's for sure.

Also, regarding MKBHD. Remember he either intentionally or accidentally revealed the MBA review embargo date to be on July 14 when he showed his personal calendar in the ROG phone video. Those dates usually end up kinda floaty but one day before launch is kinda normal.

Unless it is from a reviewer I trust, I would be skeptical of any YouTuber that gets early access to devices to review. Companies tend to send their products to "friendly" reviewers, so you may not get an honest review.

I would order, with the intentions of potentially cancelling the order or returning the MBA, or just wait until it has been out for a while to see what the final verdict is.
I tend to steer clear of those Youtube reviewers who post on “that one weird thing“ that they found about Apple product X.

The most important issue that many people might care about this time is whether Apple is giving us a slower SSD this round. I'd imagine even biased reviewers cannot outright lie about the numbers. So it would be useful to hear from those who have early access if they would test the SSD.

iJustine, of course, would love these MBA. :)
Why would a cheaper MacBook Air uses more expensive components than the more expensive MacBook Pro? It will be the same, single NAND on 256GB model.

And most reviewers wouldn't be pointing this out because Apple will send them 1TB models. In the end, from Apple's perspective, only poor people who buy base models would be affected, so they don't care.

In my opinion, the best review is done by the average consumer who buys the product, uses it for 2 weeks under normal day to day usage and then make an educated decision whether or not said machine meets the need. I don't see how Rene would be able to add anything of real merit past what someone else not on YouTube can do on his or her own.

Maybe I am the exception around here but, I don't need to base my buying decision on Rene or any other YouTube personality or tech site.
I like Rene’s stuff most of the time, but I read the poster as being sarcastic. Rene will defend / promote pretty much anything Apple does. Maybe second only to John Gruber in that regard.

Has Rene announced what he is doing next?

He is leaving Macbreak Weekly... and he said his Youtube videos will be slowing down too.

Is he being pulled to Cupertino like so many others before him?

:)

Err, that's not even a conspiracy. Ask Leo Laporte. And it's not just Apple, it's every entity. Even the White House is very selective on which journalist they gave access to. It's controlled.

Besides, most tech reviewers today are barely a techie. All they talk about are literally just the same marketing points Apple said in their keynotes. Nobody ever go further deep diving other than maybe Anandtech.

Agree. Real reviews are from people using their own money to actually use the device for real daily work, not just being given a free top of the spec model to be played with for a week.

I'll admit, I've been looking for reviews already too. I'm so excited about this Mac, and I'm not even buying one. I have just really wanted to see a non wedge shaped MacBook Air for so long. I really do love my MacBook Pro, but that thin and light Air version of the design is just SO APPEALING.

I'm honestly going to go to the Apple Store when they come out just to goof around with the display model. Again, I'm really loving the power of my new MBP, but I'm SO JEALOUS of the people who are buying the M2 Air.

I think this is meant as a joke because Renee usually is positive in his reviews about Apple products so he’s called an Apple shill by some cynics. Well I would agree that don’t just listen to one review or reviewer I don’t think Renee is a shill. Of course contrast his reviews by click bait ones from max tech and yeah they look like it. Renee doesn’t use headlines like Don’t buy this Mac or some Clickbait headline about overheating.

What drives me crazy is you get these fake reviews that will mention the product and they will have what you think is that products on the screenshot but it will either be a different Mac or some type of artist rendering. Then you got the “content creator” talking about the product while holding a completely different product trying to demonstrate something. Usually too many of those will earn them an unsubscribe from me

That’s a very cynical way to look at things. Apple or no company cares. I’m so sick of people saying some company cares about something. They care about making a profit. If you get that out of the way then you will lose any emotional attachment to said company. There’s no reason why Apple would sabotage its own product because they felt poor people don’t care.

As to the single SSD that is likely due to supply shortages. It’s likely the same single 256 GB SSD but x2 that they use on the 512 GB version.

Sadly, if you want unbiased reviews you have to skip the influencers that are provided with early review units by Apple under conditions and wait for reviewers that buy out of their own pocket or through viewer donations.

poor people lol, base model is $1900AUD here, maybe some people just want basic use. to go to 512gb its another $450
This is exactly why I bought my mom the base model M1 Air when it came out. She would never use more than 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM. Buying more would just be a waste. She loves her Air and has no problems with it
