or not!.. i dont need portability. I need the screen size 27 inch i wont spend on external display not a chance.. also i dont want to get glued on 16 gb of ram and glued ssd no thanks.

Just FYI - the SSD isn't glued on. There just aren't any replacement parts available yet. But it pops out (rather like a memory stick, ironically).

If you really need a new iMac: then buy the current model now. It's a blisteringly fast machine, and will last you 4 to 6 years at least. If you're likely to buy a newer one in less time than that, then it's even less of an issue.

Unless you are trying to calculate all the SETI data, or trying to compete with Pixar on a budget, a 2011 iMac will FLY using Creative Suite, Logic, whatever you want.

TBH, the same is true for the multi-core MacPros. They are still incredibly powerful machine and can do lots of stuff very quickly. Are production jobs really that much more complex than they were two years ago, when these machines were the latest things?

Until the new machines turn up, they are just Jam Tomorrow.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jam_tomorrow
If you want Jam Today, buy the current Mac.

You're right about the iMacs but I think the Pros are a different story.

In my last job we did a lot of video production. Every 2 or 3 years the computers doubled in speed. The rendering machines were around $8-10k each but it didn't matter because every job billed between $2-5k. When you can do twice the work in a day you buy the new machines!

I can imagine there are some shops that are being forced to switch to Windows, but if they're heavily invested in Mac software licenses then they're up a creek. I imagine they aren't real happy with Apple if they're losing business.

Home users can sit tight for now, nobody's losing customers because they don't have USB 3.0.

I'm willing to bet a future redesign of the iMac will feature soldered on flash storage just like the rMBP and MBAs in a thinner chassis design. Im personally hoping for such a change in the iMac lineup. If Apple doesn't allow for user swappable hard drives now, what makes people think they will in the future?

Just a little rant: I don't buy the "...but it isn't a laptop." argument anymore. Apple's investment in thunderbolt technology means their future (with emphasis on the use of the word, "their") is in high bandwidth external peripheral expansion. Forget that TB will probably never eclipse SATA 3 or any future SATA specs, the rMBP is pure evidence of Apple's direction in the Mac line.

If Cook's words are to be believed, and I think they should, the Mac Pro will be here to stay and will keep offering Pro users that need for internal expandability at the highest bandwidth speeds available. But for iMac and the rest of the Mac lineup? I'd expect in the future that all expandability to be BTO through Apple's online store, or risk it yourself in a DIY/void warranty method (except maybe for memory upgrades...).

It really depends on more than that, and rendering machines are different than workstations although in some cases you could distribute some of the load amongst them. Given that you said $8-10k, it doesn't sound like you're full populating a 48U rack:D or something of that sort. In that kind of situation what matters is that you're not waiting on the machines, and like I said that means very little in terms of the workstations. No one in their right mind is setting up a render farm based on mac pros. In the case of software, assuming it's available on Windows, some developers are more lenient than others. You just have to call and ask. They're especially willing to help if you're going to be upgrading to the most recent version assuming this isn't one with a subscription upgrade model. If they're being forced to switch, it could be more than just cpu options that are motivating the change. If they were buying 12 core machines the last round, those should hold up reasonably well. If they own 8 core nehalems from 2009 and they want 16 core Sandy Bridge E, that could be an issue.

Then don't read them?

MR can't post information they don't have.

i understand where youre coming from. the thing is that...umm you see.... i kinda make money off making videos like editing shooting stuff and theres a lot money that i have to turn down because of this.. so not having a proper computer is kinda bad for me at this moment you know.. im not just a regular user i need a maxed out imac because the mac pros are history till next year if apple decides to do something with it... so i can do need it.. and please dont reply with buy the current one that doesnt help alright.. thanks

Did someone steal your YoYo? All this WTFs and rants about something that's not even here yet. This is what makes me think this forum should be split. One for adults and the other for the juveniles!

Simple solution dude buy a new Retina Mbp!

- Sent from the New ratina Macbook pro!!! -

All WTF and trash talking is due to too much story and news on rMBP, yet you suggest people here to get one.

Yeah rMBP is cool, it's got the new "Retina" .. but I'd appreciate bigger screen and better hardware resource more.

So what do you expect with - Sent from the New ratina Macbook pro!!! - .. Say Whoaa?? Okay then .. Whoaa

I have posted a thread addressing just this....where the heck is ANY news about iMac?!?! I am so sick of the iPhone, iPad, and MB/MBP.....enough already!

By the way, there are Thunderbolt docks now that provide two Esata ports; Thunderbolt is not going away. When the next generation of Intel comes along, after Ivy Bridge, they will support Thunderbolt natively. There are security issues which threaten PCs with Thunderbolt due to low level memory access, but the next Intel architecture - Haswell - should have worked all that out. So by then, Thunderbolt will be cheap IMO. And don't imagine that there won't be MkII versions of Thunderbolt. it was optical, hence with huge speed and distance/stability superiority, and that could happen again ... today's copper is still quick, and supports power ... but a MkII Thunderbolt could be all that is needed for a very very long time. Who knows.

As far as the macbook pros go, its been reported the memory cards are plug in cards. its just there are no non Apple ones around yet. They are not soldered on, according to what I have read.

Which MBP were you talking about? Regular MBP would work the same as previous. But rMBP is something else. Basically all parts are glued together to make it as thin as it is. RAM included

Seriously, gimme the freakin iMac. Now. I'm actually being tempted by the non-retina MacBook Pro now. It has the same processor and graphics chip as the retina, without all that 2880x1800 overhead nonsense, PLUS have you seen that baby opened up? Hard drive, ram, fans, battery, all right there, just asking you to have your way with them. The iMac is nearly as locked up as the retina is. Decisions, decisions...

Yeah I've seen that. But upgrading those means you'd lose Apple warranty for hardware replaced by yourself. Not much better than iMac could have.

Only different is you can do it on non rMBP quite easily, on an iMac you'd have to be a tinkerer or seek help from Apple technician.

Pogue

"Many Apple observers also wonder if Apple thinks that desktop computers are dead, since not a word was said about the iMac and Mac Pro. An executive did assure me, however, that new models and new designs are under way, probably for release in 2013."

I believe that particular quote has been walked back. But one would be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that Apple has decided anything that cannot be stuffed into a bag and run on a non-user-replaceable battery is passé.

i share the pain....so sick of macbook news. If I had to buy a mackbook, it would most likely stay at my desk 99% of the time, completely penetrated with cables - and I would have to pay around $1000 extra for the same specs..just because its MOBILE which I dont need....Now, Apple has to have other alternatives to that, and iMac is that perfect alternative. I can´t understand that iMac isn´t still a high selling product, I see them everywhere! :(

And it would have a $1000 retina display I never look at, because I'd have it hooked up to a monitor.

the funny thing is that i actually need a mac pro not an imac but since apple is taking their sweet ass time and forget about the pro users. now i dont have a machine to work on i wont go a buy a laptop nor im going the windows route or hackingtosh... the desktop line were way more over due than the laptops and they always leave those for last.. Apple has pissed me off so much.. i have so many projects on hold and i would not throw away my money by buying a 2010 mac pro or 2011 imac not a chance.. then these websites are the same as apple they have so many articles about the newest laptop and iphone and ipad and even apple tv set **** but the desktop line noooo forget about those ...

More proof that apple is a portable computing company and not serious about desktop options.

The title of this thread is hilarious, thanks for the laugh :D

I imagine Apple's trying to add "Retina" iMac lines, but yields for 3840x2160 21.5 inch displays and 5120x2880 27 inch displays aren't good enough yet for a release around WWDC. Two months at most, I'd say until we see them. Hopefully w/ Retina too.
