Like others i use private torrent sites. I pay for premium cable tv ( i only use it for live sport), i pay for the best cable internet (in Australia) and i donate to certain private torrent sites. I have a HTPC hooked up to my big screen tv running XBMC and it works perfectly, NO ads, High definition video AND sound and i can watch what i want, when i want. The movie quality on itunes simply cant compete with the quality of a good 1080p MKV bluray rip with HD sound.

The truth is Australia is living in the past, we don't even get HD on our three main FTA channels, we also only get a small selection of the shows that are shown overseas. We cant use netflix to watch American TV's shows either without using a VPN. I would happily pay for a service that allowed me to watch High Definition new release TV shows and Movies on demand without Ads but sadly such a service does not exist. If these companies want my money provide me with a service that warrants it.

A get my music from torrents and movies from streaming sites and I am not proud of myself :(

Since doing a major living room renovation last summer (which included an LED TV upgrade and an Apple TV as well as Netflix and an upgraded cable service), I've been transitioning to all-digital sources. I had acquired a collection of DVDs, which I ripped to iTunes and watch on the Home Sharing. New content is purchased/rented through the iTunes Store, Amazon Instant Video (Prime membership), or Netflix.

How long do you think it will be before it's possible for digital content to look as good as bluray

Amazon & Vudu for movies I want to own. Rentals I usually use Vudu. Free content, Xfinity, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime.

About 150 of my previously purchased SD DVDs have been ripped and then metadata added and organized into iTunes. Currently at 285 movies in iTunes!!!! Haven't purchased a DVD since the re-make of Hairspray. Ha!

So because YOU don't like the terms the content providers have set for their content, you justify stealing it?

I think BMW's are over priced and I don't like that I have to go to the store to pick it out and deal with a salesman. I'm just going to steal one

I would if the content creators provided a service anywhere close to what I'm getting now. No DRM, no commercials, everything On Demand or via rss auto download ready to be played on your media device of choice, reasonable prices, not $20 for a digital copy of a movie in worse quality than Blu-ray that is restricted to certain devices, and might disappear at anytime in the future due to "licensing issues".

They are stuck in the past, just like music once was in the Napster era. I'm sure one day they'll come around and offer more consumer friendly streaming/download services, because eventually the younger market will demand it. Netflix is a good start.

I actually live in a household that pays for cable, every channel, even the premiums. But I have no use for it, so I don't pay for that portion of the bill. I have an HTPC that does everything I need, and I don't miss out on any shows at all. Watching via XBMC is a 100x better experience than the garbage cable box they give you. Picture quality is also better with madVR and ffdshow.

2 AppleTVs ver 3, Plex server running on iMac along with Plexconnect which the ATVs access. Over 500 movies and growing being served up via a TB-Drobo attached to the iMac. Buy DVD's & BD's, rip them via AnyDVD then use Handbreak to get them into the correct format. :D

Mostly iTunes. I do use netflix and Hulu plus also. Most of my movies are either digital copies that came with disc purchase, or DVD/blu rips I stream from iTunes to my Apple TV.

wow! Interesting what everyone does to get movies.

I think paying "HIGH END CABLE" doesn't justify downloading movies because you don't watch all the channels lol.

Come live in Australia for a while and you will see we are given no option, which was the point of my post. Im paying for every service available to me!!! Ill download Tv shows from the internet without any guilt as long as content providers continue to screw Aussies over.

I don't know of any movie (new or old) worth buying. If I want a new release I rent it from Redbox other than that I watch them on Netflix. Buy a movie? No thanks.

I don't want this to come off as saying illegal downloads are good or justified; rather I think analogies like this are wrong and this line of thinking actually hurts our chances of finding a proper solution.

The difference is, you would be taking one specific car that BMW specifically spent money making. If there were 100 cars in the lot, after your theft there would be 99 left. You prevented that 100th person that actually wants a BMW from getting a BMW; and BMW has been deprived of the money it spent on making that specific car.

Compare to downloading movies. There is inherently an infinite number of potential downloads. Any number of illegal downloads don't disrupt any legal purchasers. If 100 people wanted to legally purchase it, and 1,000 illegally download it, those 100 can still purchase it. Surely, the content creator spent money making the content, but that isn't tied to any specific download because the downloads aren't unique.

Downloads and digital data are not a commoditized good; they are not exhaustible. A BMW is.

The best analogy I have ever read is this: Illegally downloading music is like climbing up onto a fence at an outdoor general admission concert. You get to hear the music and see the show, but you didn't pay for a ticket. At the same time, you aren't interfering with any ticket-holders' enjoyment of the music and show. It's not really theft then; it's trespass.

Really??? I mean REALLY??? This is one of the worst analogies I've ever heard. You may not be depriving the people who legally purchased their music of their enjoyment of listening to the music but you certainly are depriving the artist/rights holder of a return on producing that music.

The better analogy would be sneaking into a movie/concert that charged money to attend (one that you had no way of seeing/hearing otherwise unless you broke the law) to see that movie/concert and thinking that was fine - would you think that was OK? Would you do that? You probably don't morally think its fine and you probably wouldn't do it for fear of being caught. Most people who illegally download justify it to themselves for various reasons but the main reason they continue to do it is because they don't believe they will get caught.

This is a moral issue and what you choose to do is your choice but be honest and admit that you are no better than a common thief or shop-lifter and you do this because you simply don't want to pay the price that has been set for a product (albeit that might mean buying a physical copy of the item rather than a digital copy) and you don't think you'll be caught.

For the Record - I don't work for any industry body or studio etc and am somewhat of a hypocrite as I rip all the DVD's/Bluray's I own, which depending on where you are in the world can also be illegal.

If I really must see the movie right away I'm see it at a $8 mat which I find very expensive so only do it about 4 times a year, all big Sci Fi movies. In most cases I wait till the movie is out in DVD and rent it via Redbox for $1.50. If I like the movie enough to see myself watching several times and is visually stunning I wait for a used Blue-ray BR/DVD/Digital combo) at CDexchange and get it for about $15 or off Amazon used for the same price.

A few shows I buy the season in Blue-ray if they go down to $20each. I have Seasons 1 & 2 of Walking Dead, Season 1-3 Game of Thrones, Season 1-6 Big Bang Theory, Terra Nova, Season 1 & 2 Lost Girl and a few others.

even though it's not legal i'm surprised that no one has mentioned that they rip movies that they've rented from redbox.

maybe so however it hasn't stopped a few from mentioning illegally downloading movies.

That's how criminals usually get caught and convicted. Bragging about their crimes.

All criminals have bogus justifications for their criminal behavior. But it's still criminal behavior and they know it deep down.

Stopped buying iTunes content as when you move around the world the different accounts per country and DRM don't make life easy.

Sometimes I rent a movie via Apple TV but mainly via Hulu/internet and Fox/cable. But not much time anyway.

Digital copies via blu-rays. I like DTS-MA and 1080p on the 140" screen. Sorry iTunes do look like crap, and their sound quality just isn't as good.
