Got a Surface -- it is collecting dust

I have an iMac 27" mid 2011, a MacBook 13" 2009? Unibody, an iPad Air, 2 iPhone 5s, and a MacPro 2009 12-core machine -- wait, yes a Surface Pro first-gen.

Surface Pro? Nice tablet -- not so much. Nice computer -- mediocre, it runs desktop Win 8 apps. Handling it? Feels like a ton of bricks. Usage -- not much when my left arm starts to hurt holding it -- but wait, it has been four hours and it no longer runs!

I will admit, those comments are harsh, and the battery issue can be resolved with a $199 power cover.

We run VMs in our office of Win 8 through iMacs and MacPros because we need certain critical apps. I use my Mac Book. I use my iPad a lot. The Surface? It's collecting dust. There is just no application that I need that will exclusively work on the Surface or for that matter in any Windows computer that I cannot replicate by running virtually with Fusion or some other VM program.

So for personal use, the Surface feels clunky, the interface, not polished, and with the exception of a bump in speed and lower weight, the Surface 3 is not any better.

Response?

What for?

I like Microsoft, but the Surface project just does not seem to hit any of the marks the typical Apple user (me) really cares about.

It looks like Microsoft nailed the display although I didn't need an article to tell me what I was already seeing. Now it's Apple's turn to respond. For one Apple really needs to start optical bonding the display on iPad's. Also note that the SP3 display uses less power than the iPad Air.

The display really is gorgeous. Was tempted to keep the SP3 just to stare at the screen. :p

It's been nearly three years now since we saw Microsoft tease what they thought Surface could be. Now with the Surface Pro 3 they've been able to refine their product down to what is a pretty sweet rig.

My question is, where is Apple's rebuttal?
Imagine a "tablet" not much thicker or heavier than the iPad Air running a fully fledged version of OS X, with 8GB RAM and a powerful processor.

Honestly I can't see why this wouldn't be an area Apple would miss.
Thoughts?

Why would apple rebut to a failure

I don't think Apple needs to respond. I don't recall them ever responding to these spitting wars with Microsoft and Samsung -- unless I missed it?

They may view it as flattery when the competitors resort to calling them out in commercials and advertisements. Some people think there's no such thing as bad press.

Handling it? Feels like a ton of bricks.

Why do you think the Macbook Air feels like a "Ton of Bricks"?

The Surface Pro is lighter than the Macbook Air.

Do you really think the Macbook air is even heavier than a Ton Of Bricks?

Strange...

I think I read somewhere that the Surface Pro 3 is only lighter than the MacBook Air if you don't connect the keyboard to it.

Well, the surface pro feels like a ton of bricks if you use it as a tablet -- I mean, I own one. I do, and no joke, your arm will hurt after holding it for a while. The iPad Air never hurts since it is much lighter than the Surface, and of course it is lighter than the Macbook Air.

But you see, you miss the whole point here. The MacBook Air will never be a tablet. It will sit in a desk or your lap. You are not going to try to hold the MacBook Air in one arm while using a stylus with it. So weight is not so much an issue unless you are talking about lugging it around your backpack or briefcase.

The Surface Pro 3: 1) Capable -- yes! 2) Conceptually successful as a hybrid tablet/laptop? -- no! -- it is probably a good laptop, but as a tablet, it just misses the point -- it never feels that great in your hands. If it did, I would use it all day long instead of my iPad. Think about this, I am typing this from my desk right now. I don't think it would feel very convenient doing so standing up -- that is why hybrid tablet/laptops will never take off. They are not very comfortable to use and you are really never sure how to best use them.
