Newegg!!!

I always buy mine from Newegg.com and have never had a problem. Use dealram.com to find the right memory then look at Newegg reviews to make sure other mac users have verified it works in Macbooks/MBP, ect.

Still waiting on my 8GB of RAM for my new Mac Pro from OWC that i ordered on January 10th. No hurry as my box wont be here until mid Feb but they don't list when the RAM is even due to ship. Merely a "Your order has been received and in queue to ship as soon as product can be allocated." What the hell does that mean? Anyone else in the same boat?

Quite.

hey hey, just got my shipping confirmation order from OWC. 2X2 left via fed-ex tonight after 8.

and according to the email, they sent it standard overnight, which is cool since i only paid for second day.

seems like they're at least trying to make up for the fact that it took them almost a week to ship it:cool:

Same here.. ordered 4x2GB and its shipped. :)

Looks like they're shipping everything at once - I got my notice tonight as well, 2 2gig chips on their way, and my Mac Pro will be here Friday, so not too bad...I think I can live on 2 gig RAM for a few days ;)

I just ordered 4 gigs (2 x2) from OWC. I just got an e-mail saying that the supply is back ordered and probably won't ship until at least Jan. 21st. Considering the money I saved, I just want to thank everyone on this forum for talking me out of purchasing from Apple direct.

To be honest, it seems that apple is the only one that is ridiculously slow in the shipping process. This is my first ever mac purchase, and 3 to 5 weeks to put in a new video card (8800GT) is friggin' annoying. I'm willing to be patient, but damn is it hard. I'm praying that a delivery date of "Feb. 19th" is very conservative...

in my experience with ipods and stuff the dates are conservative, but with their 'pro' hardware its usually correct, if lucky it might cut short by 3-4 days, but because its CTO and is being shipped possibly from China directly, the shipping itself might take longer than usual, and you'll find yourself checking the tracking status every other hour for a few days.. but it's all part of the fun!! :)

I ordered mine from OWC and they are still stating processing and I paid for overnight shipping. Anyone had any luck with anyone else. I am thinking about canceling and ordering from data solutions. Any ideas.

i accidently ordered 4GB 'qualified' modules from OWC, and was very pleased with the promptness to my email request to change the order to 2GB modules, i got a response and the order amended within the hour.

so i've ordered 8x 2GB, am expecting the Back Order notification any second now, will inform how it goes :)

i live in the UK and chose FedEx who i've been told will get through customs better than the others, but even if i do get hit with customs i figure the maximum i'll be charged is around $200, so i'll be paying £500/$1000 for 16GB, which is still more than £200/$400 cheaper than buying from here according to Crucial's prices for their 667Mhz modules, as no one here is supplying the 800Mhz ones. And OWC's returns and replacement policy has made me feel very confident with buying their ram over Apple's which would have cost me £2,200/$4,400!!!! that price is frankly a joke.

Someone was asking me if I ordered Certified or Qualified memory from OWC for my 2008 Mac Pro. I ordered Qualified after talking to the president of the company, Larry O'Connor. He gave me permission to post this:

"As well as building (Certified) modules for OWC, Netlist was also one of Apple's memory suppliers who provided modules for use in Apple factory configured Mac Pro systems. As an Apple memory supplier, Netlist puts those modules through a specific Apple certification test process as per the requirements provided by Apple.

OWC Qualified modules are built with attention to the same high standards. This includes using qualified components on our modules as well. For example, while other AMBs do seem to work ... for the Mac Pro modules, OWC (and Netlist) build only with the IDT AMB as approved by Apple.

We have shipped literally tens of thousands of the Mac Pro modules and our Quality control in build process and qualification ensure those modules provide or customers with a lifetime of reliable high performance operation."

Can you ever have too much RAM?

If money is no object is it always better to get as much RAM as possible or would I be just wasting my money stacking 32GB in there?
I mainly use CS3, Capture One and Aperture (I'm a photographer). Often these Apps are open at the same time, doing working in the background processing RAW files, running actions etc. I do sometimes codex movies for my :apple:TV but will probably do that less when I can buy movies on UK iTunes.
Is there a simple way to work out how much RAM I need?
I am going to order the 3.2 in a week or so... was waiting for MW and the RAM supply to start flowing.

As I understand it, the Heat-Spreaders on the Netlist ram modules are not the same as the ones that come on the Mac Pro. They may be better, but I don't think they are the same design.

I wouldn't get 32 all at once. Photoshop only uses up to about 4GB. I'd imagine most other photo applications don't use very much either. If you're thinking that you want to expand with the intention of eventually have 32GB, start by getting 2 x 4GB sticks. Once you have those in, run your apps and monitor the system to see how much of that you're actually using. Personally (I'm a photographer, too), I'm going to buy 2 x 2GB sticks ($200) to start with a total of 6GB. I'm willing to bet that will be enough. If not, I'll get another 2x2.

Huge shortage

I got a great deal 16gb for $775.
It was a little tricky to install, you have to follow exactly the directions from apple.
I spent 1 hour on the phone with the tech guy from MemoryAmerica.com
But now, (1 week later ) no crash!
because of the shortage, the price will go up ( as I heard ):(

I find it had to believe it was tricky installing on a Mac Pro. Let's see. You had 8 X 2GB modules and you had 4 slots on riser A and 4 on riser B. You had to take out the 2 one GB modules that came with your Mac Pro (on one each riser for the new Mac Pros), then you just filled up all the slots. Can you explain the tricky part and the one hour on the phone. I don't quite get the picture.

took a chance with a cheaper option

i havn't seen anyone buy from memoryamerica.com yet but i went ahead and tried it since they were a bit cheaper than OWC. i called them to see if they had 8x2gb in stock and they said they did. (this was on monday btw)

had them overnighted, received next day, and is now running in my system with no problems. can't be happier :D

if you want to take a look, just message me and i'll send you the link.
(these are for the new 800mhz fbdimm btw.)

edit: whoa i just posted and i saw someone else bought it also!

I'm also in the UK, about 400 yards from North Wales. I've just ordered from OWC but am getting it sent via a friend in the US so hopefully won't incur any customs charges. I've ordered 4x2GB which worked out about 3 times cheaper than I've found it in the UK so far.

I had to remove the original memory from Riser A install it in Riser B
and install the new memory in Riser A....a little tricky.
sorry I dont work At the Genius Bar. and btw it was 4 modules of 4GB :)

I read this on OWC-website: Four or More FB-DIMMs installed
provides for best performance FB DIMM technology takes advantage of multiple channel access. Apple recommends the use of 4 or more modules to take advantage of this 256-Bit Wide memory architecture. Modules must be installed in pairs, each module us 64 Bits Wide + 8 Bits for Error Correction (ECC)

Does that mean it is better to have four modules with the same specifications. I intend to buy 4x2 gb or 2x4 gb. So do I let the original 2x1 in it's place or is it better to replace it and have 4 similar modules?

from what i've heard the experts say, the main thing is to have four modules (2 matched pairs)

Canadian RAM

I've found Trevor at CanadaRAM to be very quick to respond to emails. Their prices seem to be the best in Canada. With the $Cdn falling below par with the $US, it doesn't make sense to shop at OWC. OWC's $25 shipping charges and customs fees to Canada balance out the cost difference between OWC's RAM and CanadaRam's RAM. Can anyone vouch for the quality of their Certified RAM?
