Maybe just stop believing everything Gurman says? It was clear before his story, that it was never going to get released this year.

I don’t understand the obsession that *every* Apple TV should have Ethernet. It’s something probably 99% of people don’t use, so it’s illogical to assume it’s a “must have.” If you want Ethernet, you have an option to get one with it. If you’re already buying an Apple TV, the extra $30 isn’t breaking the bank.

They always had Ethernet. Removing it was just a money grab, I bet they probably just broke even after the requisite retooling of marketing, packaging, and splintering of the SKU for support coverage. Especially since there wasn’t a good reason for omission such a different form factor, necessitating trimming down the size or space on back panel.

I agree that all should support the same protocols, and see this as yet another reason why there should only be a single SKU.

Ethernet support is fit for this purpose on a device that doesn’t move, requires high bandwidth and low latency performance for video streaming a doubles as Home hub for reliability.

They could have just simplified everything by just including Ethernet and ensured protocol compliance/compatibility across the board and charged a median price between the splintered SKUs.

Little to no advantage to the consumer in doing so, other than giving them the -perception- they are making a choice to save money. You aren’t, Apple just built in the cost across a wider horizontal scale and making a case for further distinctions between SKUs, like my original comment about them choosing which port to charge more for next.

Expecting it to be a small update with a new chip and same price. Should see it launch latest by WWDC 2026.

Not sure why people are shocked that the ATV could come with an A17 Pro to be honest. They probably have quite a few lower binned ones in stock, it's the first "A" series chip to support hardware AV1 decode and Apple Intelligence and it's plenty fast. Considering the price of the Apple TV it would make a lot of sense.

I still have the very first 4K version and happy with it. However I am beginning to consider upgrading if it will be worth of it.
Me too…but it’s kinda laggy. Not to point it out and all..but….the move between the tiles is excruciating. But as a streaming device it’s marvellous.

I think if it has a camera, wouldn't it be best if it mounted on one of the sites of a TV?

Currently, the Apple TV supports apps like FaceTime and zoom, but I believe that for most people, having to park your own smartphone next to it is too much of a hassle. I am thinking that if a new Apple TV were to support webcams, it would be something along the lines of what the Switch 2 has done. Have a usb-c port where you can connect a webcam that's either mounted to a stand, or at the top of your television. I guess it would also allow Apple to sell an additional accessory?

Same here. Got a brand new 4K tv, wondering if a new Apple TV would improve image quality, especially as Netflix only provides HDR10+ to AV1 capable devices - the 3rd generation does not, the 4th generation might. So I'll just wait. The first gen 4K still works fine. The 2015 HD version upstairs does not, so I'd gladly shift the first gen upstairs and have a the 4th gen 4K (or 8K?) at the main TV.

Apple TV has so much potential but everytime something is not a hit Apple neglects it. This is not how to make something successful. How about do one for 99 which is just a streaming device and one for 199 which can be used as a console to play real console games and not that junk from the App Store.

Its good now but too overpriced for its use case which is streaming. A chip upgrade won’t make it suddenly successful. Its already overpowered for what it does. Its a glorified streaming machine. People won’t buy a device to stream Netflix if its already in the TV build in. Its not the 00s anymore. The new one needs to offer more than a smart TV does and needs to be 99.
Or they could just leave the low-end/home market to Amazon. At this point, Apple seem unlikely to be able to make their usual premium offering here. Amazon Fire sticks sell for around £20-30 on sale and work quite well, so a $99(+tax) device would need to be very special to make any kind of impact.

There definitely is a market for streaming sticks - Smart TV interfaces are generally poor and the hardware can be slow and can't be upgraded. I actively look for TVs/monitors that don't have "smart" features - better value and work better. But as I said, Amazon has the market pretty well cornered.

I don’t really get Apple TV. What does it offer modern smart TV can not offer? Now there is even Apple TV app on smart TVs. Not trying to be rude. Just looking for a reason to buy one of these🤣

Gurman is such an asset to MacRumors, they get a story when he predicts something and another when he's wrong.

Every now and then, Macrumors publishes articles about how pleasantly accurate Gurman's wild stories and narratives are. News must take good care of its operational puppets 🤣.
When the puppets eventually degenerate into a state of dysfunction, News will naturally have to rebalance itself very quickly. Macrumors will have to do the same if it doesn't want to be seen as an unreliable reteller.

Console gaming and AI. In other words, they want the Apple TV to be on the same page as the rest of their lineup when it comes to the latest features.

There won’t be console gaming no matter what chip it has. Apple doesn’t care about that type of gaming, at all, and game producers aren’t going to support it.

If you want a console, get a console.

The market is getting smaller. Its not the 00s and 10s anymore. TVs are not great but they good enough today to open streaming apps. If there was still dumb TVs than I would agree. I would have bought a dumb one with a Apple TV box. But there is no dumb TV. All TVs are "smart" ones and most people are not going to spend another $129/169€ for a box that does the same thing as the TV and that is opening Netflix, YouTube and all the other streaming apps. Also then you have two remotes laying around, a box and more cables that collect dust, and there is a time lag if you open the TV with Apple TV.

Apple needs to offer more today. Its not enough to just offer a fancy overpowered streaming box anymore. Make it smaller, cheaper or maybe put a blu ray drive in there (I know this will not happen), turn it into a game console, or release a real TV.

I do 4-6h gaming weekly on an ATV, even though I have current gen consoles no prob.

There's a good selection of arcade games on the App Store, which games run just fine even on an 2015 ATV, let alone on the able SoCs in the 4K ATVs.

That’s fine, it’s still not going to happen.

I’m not a gamer, and almost never play, but my kids do, and they have almost no interest in Apple Arcade games.. They will play Switch games all day.

It’s not going to be some AAA game machine. At beach it’ll be like the Netflix game experience, which I’m sure dwarfs the amount of people playing games on the Apple TV.

Apple TV-App: Immersive content (AVP).
If you already own a device (your TV with a remote control that you have already learned how to use), you will probably never buy another one—one is enough. And, of course, these devices are always married to the content providers, who try to curry favor with you with introductory gifts. That's the most important point. And that's how people end up at Amazon, Apple, or elsewhere.
I bought a lot of movies from Apple, and when some of them were upgraded to 3D, I didn't have to pay again. Apple does the same thing with iTunes, and with Apple Music, you automatically get the best technology available, which doesn't need to be promoted because everyone knows it. The same goes for lyrics, and soon translations. This is how content providers differ in their customer focus.

The current one works fine.
And an old car from 2000 can get you back and forth to the grocery store. The fact it works "fine" doesn't mean it can't work better...it can. The A17 Pro brings native AV1 decoding which many streamers use but current Apple TV boxes can't play. A more powerful chip could also bring better on-device decoding or "transcoding" from servers like Plex.

Well, game producers already support it, as I play commercial games, not homebrew. Nobody said they needed to be AAA games. There were no AAA games on the iOS store when iphone/ipod touch released, yet silly little games where the bulk of what people were buying off the App Store. Rinse, repeat on ATV.

You an do all that, but it doesn't really make it a "console" like people on here keep asking for. They are looking for PS5 and Switch -level games from big studios, and have asked for such.

I can play silly little games on Netflix and Roku too.
