Why do you think tech people dont like safari? :D
wow a lot of people use safari.
i would think that there would be tech savy people on here and see the benefits of firefox.

but w/e to each his own.

i know i used safari and thought down on firefox, but the day i was able to add to the search bar changed me forever.

there is a little add on and instead of only searching google in the top right search box, you can add all the ones you want.

i currently have 27 engines, and they are ordered in most to lest used.
1. google
2. cuil
3. ixquick
4. google directory
5. yahoo
6. answers
7. pirate bay
8. bittorrent monster
9. dictionary
10. creative commons
11. amazon
12. ebay
13. ask
14. fulldls
15. firefox addons
16. highwire press
17. time
18. cnn
19. discover magazine
20. los angeles times
21. find law
22. market watch
23. search edu
24. librarians index
25. sbc library
26. info mine
27. library of congress

not to mention all the other add ons i have.
but when i go on another browser im always like wtf why isn't this doing it, o wait ya it cant do that.

Eh.. looks like a lot of addons still haven't been released their updates so don't work for 3.1 :( Themes as well.. let's just use 3.0 for now and wait for 3.1 to come final :D

I answered Google Chrome, although I use Safari because it's the only one of the two possible on mac. But I could see me preferring Chrome if it was avaible..

Great safari-like theme here, even for 3.1b2

FF 3.1B2 actually got me to switch back to FF. The main thing, smooth scrolling. It actually scrolls smoothly. Now if it just synced bookmarks with mobile me, and zoomed instead of maximized, I'd be set.

I've been using Google Chrome on my windows laptop (work) since it's release, and it is fantastic...by far my favorite browser. I love the clean interface and overall look, and I really love the tabbing system and the way they line up across the top like files in a cabinet. And the best thing...the single search/url input bar that searches google as you type. It works so well, and has made my computing life better. There really is no need for a separate url bar and search bar.

Can't wait for the mac release.

I swap between Firefox and Safari. I've been spending more time in Firefox since the advent of the Awesome Bar. The open standards advocate in me is thrilled about the upcoming native support of Theora in FF3.1.

Firefox all the way. I dont understand the benefits of using Safari instead of Firefox, probably because there arent many. Anything (read: 99% of things) safari does firefox can do with an addon and probably even does it better. Adblocking, download management, themeing... Firefox just wins.

Somehow for me, FF doesn't cover all the Java based platforms for online gaming, like for sites like Pogo, and Yahoo games. Somehow the games open, but the graphics aren't all there. Then again I am using a Blackbook with everything stock. Safari seems the better browser for online games, so I use that to access the sites, and to download things for the Mac.

I bounce between Safari and Firefox. I usually end up going back to Safari since it syncs my bookmarks(via mobile me) to all my Macs and iPhone. I'm looking forward to giving Google Chrome a try when it comes to OS X.

Tried Safari & Camino but just keep coming back to Firefox. Its so good typing Times into the url bar and it opens the Times (uk) newspaper. Or type a movie title followed by imdb into the url bar and it opens the relevent page on imdb. The url can cope with spaces between the words and just knows im in the uk. Neither safari or camino appear to be able to do this, which is a shame because i quite liked camino.

I dont play java/flash games so that really doesnt bother me. I wonder why FF has a hard time though?

I prefer WebKit over Gecko nowdays, but I still prefer Firefox over all the webkit-based browsers, much thanks to the excellent addons available for it.

I use Minefield (Firefox pre-beta-- Google it) on OSX and Chrome on Windows. Minefield is and insanely fast version of Firefox (especially when turbo-charged using the about:config), the only issue is almost no add-ons are compatable, and certain minor parts of webpages dont display perfectly. Chrome is slower but loads really fast and has a very nice, simple UI (and pretty for Windoze).

I have no idea why anyone would use safari when firefox is gloriously flexible. Here's a few questions I posted in June in a similar thread:

"tested FF3 on OSX for a while and I love it. but after reading these posts I decided to "try" safari again and came up with some questions for Safari users:

  1. How do I sync bookmarks across multiple machines automatically for free?
  2. How do I change the switch tabs hotkey to something that doesn't require 3 buttons?
  3. How do I install mouse gestures seamlessly and for free?
  4. How do I drag and drop my tabs, and also set the open, close, and switch sequence of my tabs?
  5. How do I download multiple mp3s or aac files off a music blog in two clicks simply based on their filetype?
  6. How do I customize all Google websites to remove text ads, clicktracking, automatically?
  7. How can I force an encrypted connection to gmail, add row highlights to my mail and attachment icons?
  8. How can I type in the exact website I want and have it fill in my www and .com for me?
  9. How can I integrate downloads into the main window without being obtrusive?
  10. How can I drag and throw links to create new windows/tabs?

If safari can do these for me I may switch to it."

Obviously I can do all these things in Firefox for free and the installs are simple. Not only that, updates are seamless. Here are the answers:

  1. Addon: Foxmarks does it for me, cross platform, cross machines, and also available online.
  2. CTRL-Tab. Works whether I'm on XP or OSX. Also handier than having to manually configure Safari shortcuts for every single machine.
  3. Addon: There are multiple addons that let you do this. I personally use FireGestures. I can't do without it. If you've never use gestures on a keyboard mouse setup, you're missing out. If you use a trackpad, it won't help.
  4. Addon: Tab Mix Plus. Allows tab drag and drop. I close a tab and the last tab I was on will highlight. I create a new tab, and it creates to the left or right of the current tab (whatever I decide). I CTRL-tab through them all and it follows the order in which I sequentially clicked on my tabs. GENIUS.
  5. Addon: Down Them All. OMG. Two clicks and I've just queued up all the .mp3 download files available on a music blog. Impossible with Safari.
  6. Addon: CustomizeGoogle. I don't see any text ads.
  7. Addon: Better Gmail 2. My gmail is always encrypted. All individual emails alternate between background colors. attachment icons on the screen.
  8. CMD-Enter automatically fills in the www. and the .com part of a web address. Its a force fill in, not a DNS search or a query. It literally adds the www. and .com at the bookends of the word. This is incredibly useful for URLs that have a subdomain in it. like typing in forums.macrumors in Safari fills in http://forums.macrumors/ which results in a "Failed to open" error. Typing in forums.macrumors and hitting CMD-Enter in FF fills in http://www.forums.macrumors.com. Also, try typing DownThemAll into Safari. It sends you to www.downthemall.com, NOT what I wanted. In Firefox, type in downthemall and press CTRL-SHIFT-Enter, and it auto fills in the www. and .net for you. In Firefox, CMD-SHIFT-Enter gives you www. and .org. Safari can't do this via keystroke.
  9. Addon: Download status bar. Its hidden near the bottom as just a number. Hover over it to get download info. Way slicker than a 2nd popup window.
  10. Addon: QuickDrag. Click on a link, and throw it anywhere, it becomes a new tab.

Or google calendar look like this? (Install for FF here)

OK I am not a Safari user but I know that it can at least do some of these, so perhaps it is worth actually trying it for yourself before just assuming it can not do them.

  1. How do I change the switch tabs hotkey to something that doesn't require 3 buttons?

System Preferences - Keyboard and Mouse - Keyboard Shortcuts - +

    Picture 2.png

Or the default cmd+] works fine with just two buttons.
  2. How do I drag and drop my tabs, and also set the open, close, and switch sequence of my tabs?

Have you used Safari recently? You can easily drag and drop tabs. THe more advanced features are lacking though.
  3. How can I force an encrypted connection to gmail, add row highlights to my mail and attachment icons?

Force an encrypted connection, where is says http:// add the s so that it is https:// More advanced features are lacking.

  4. How can I type in the exact website I want and have it fill in my www and .com for me?

Works for most sites, but not as good as firefox.
  5. How can I drag and throw links to create new windows/tabs?

New tab is just drag and drop to the tab bar. New window is not possible in one move.

Yes Safari is not for those people who like to adjust everything but it is still a competent browser.

I just downloaded to see how good it is but it turned out to be very slow.. ;( And I really can't live without these bookmarks..

Worked incredibly fast for me! :) And the funny thing is that i didn't even know about that kind of browser :D chrome ftw :)

I've always preferred the simplicity and speed of Safari, but use Firefox for unfriendly sites.

hey i figure since there are a lot of firefox people on here, i have a question.

sometimes there is sound that cannot be turned off from some games on websites or other sites.
is there an add on that makes a volume switch just for the sound coming out of fire fox?

ive been looking for this for a while

Unfortunately, you're not alone... many people are looking for something like this. I haven't found a good solution either.
