Yeah I know I could swap out at Apple, but I'd rather do a full return/exchange for another sealed box product if it's something I just bought brand new. More than likely the new one wouldn't have issues, but you never know.

I could always collect the $540 in cards and try to sell them here on the marketplace for a little discount, someone might bite.

Again, Amazon's Customer Service is fantastic. They pay for shipping and everything is usually top notch. Although I can understand why one would be skeptical. :)

Ever since I read this thread I've been almost constantly looking up where I can sell Amazon gift cards (or at least trade them for Wal-Mart gift cards and use them at Sam's Club when the iPad Air is released) and it's pretty much a major rip off. You'd be losing at least 5-10% of the value.

Man I don't know what to do...I really truly love my 4 but with that kind of return (only a $90 loss) and not having to deal with selling/shipping, I've got some thinking to do. I do think the iPad air is sweet.

I know how you're feeling. I like my iPad 3 yet its value has plummeted and will only get worse.

Now I'm thinking of perhaps waiting until Black Friday as well since most likely there will be an excess supply of iPad Airs due to bigger demand for the Mini Retinas. ;)

Think there will be decent black friday deals from Amazon resellers?

If I do upgrade, I'm not sure what color to go with. I love my iPhones in white, but I love my iPad with a black bezel. Unfortunately I hated the slate back, and while the space gray is a big improvement, I'd still prefer the silver back on the white model. So it will come down to better bezel color or better back color. I might swing by gamestop tomorrow and see if this is too good to be true.:)

Decisions, decisions.

Not from resellers but from Amazon in general.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the iPad Air isn't sold out immediately or something and by Black Friday it's already on sale.

This post has got me thinking. One problem that I have is I bought my 32GB iPad 4 from AT&T last year. Signed a 2 year contract so I'd have to pay $106. if I cancel that. Only way that I'd avoid that is if I sell it to someone that will be using it on the AT&T Network. I think I'm going to see what kind of money I could get for it. To bad they don't offer Walmart, Target or, Visa gift cards. That would make this whole thing very easy.

So are you saying then that you took the "in-store trade credit" which I took to mean store credit, but can actually mean Amazon gift cards?

Right now for my 64 gig iPad 4 wifi in perfect shape, the offer is $416 for "in-store trade credit", and $322.80 "in-store cash value".

So to understand this right, I could go in there right now and get $416 in Amazon gift cards, buy a $2 used game, and get another 30% in Amazon gift cards?

So basically I could go there, buy a $2 game, and walk out with $540.80 in Amazon gift cards? That seems absolutely insane, tell me if my methodology here is correct.

Yes. Go in store and they will check your ipad. In my case, I asked the guy what the cheapest pre-owned item was that I could add to my order and he replied "I see what you are doing" and he rang up, then took off some random 99 cent item, I don't know what it was. In theory, Gamestop allows you to return any pre-owned items for full refund within like a week or so (I'm guessing, too lazy to look it up), so you could theoretically get something pre-owned after trading in your ipad. Then tell them right there that you would like to return the pre-ordered item and to add it to your in-store credit.

While they are doing all of that, go to the gift card rack, the Amazon gift cards may say KINDLE real big on them, this doesn't matter, same thing. Grab as many as you can afford, take them up to the register and you are done. You don't pay tax on gift cards.

Cheers :)

I am really considering the Gamestop trade in as early as tomorrow. What are the odds that Amazon will have iPad Airs for sale somewhat early? This is a tough call.

Mmm, now I'm torn. It turns out that the iPad 3 64gb model can be sold in the UK for ~£390, which is ~ $580.

Since I have family in the UK, who I highly trust, now I'm considering to ship my iPad to the UK, sell it there and then transfer the money to my bank account.

What do you all think of it?

Yes you can actually.

Apple has a Recycling Program and they give you an Apple gift card according to the trade in value of your device.

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/reuse_and_recycle

According to the site my iPad 3 64gb wifi can be traded for $241.

I was just looking at that. I usually use Gazelle but they value my 64 gig ipad 4 at $280 and the Apple Recycling Program gives it a value of $341. It would nice if one could just go into an Apple store, do the deal on the spot and use the credit for a new ipad without the wait. That's the only wrinkle in using Apple Recylcing is that you're stuck without an ipad while they "review" it and fully determine it's value.

Ok, so I check Apple and they're offering (all in excellent condition, no issues, and all accessories...) $250. for the iPhone5 AT&T 16GB.
Just for fun I plugged in my iPad 64GB and the offering price is $65.
But the kicker? iPhone 8GB? $0

:(

If you shop at Amazon try trading it at a Gamestop:

http://www.gamestop.com/recommerce/web/ChooseDevice.aspx?manufacturer=Apple&family=iPad

Under their 30% extra trade in promotion you can get $540 worth of Amazon gift cards.

Also try Swappa.

http://swappa.com/buy/apple-ipad-4-wifi/us

It's free, the buyer sends the money via Paypal and you usually can get a decent price. For instance looks like someone sold their 64gb iPad 4 for $450 (the buyer has to pay an extra $10 as a fee for the site).

Unfortunately the amount Apple offers you on-line is NOT the same amount they give you in the store. I traded in my iPhone 5 at an Apple store and was given significantly less. You would think it would be the same, or perhaps even more since it can be inspected, but they examine it for damage, enter in the serial number and a quote is given. Sorry I can't remember the exact figures, but it was a lot less.

----------

At the GameStop site it calls the lower quote an "In-store cash value". Is that the amount you will receive in actual CASH? It's seems like odd wording like they could still be implying a credit. Are you forced to put in on a gift card?

Is there ever a problem with them not having that amount of cash on hand?

There are two trade-in values: "in-store credit value" and "in-store cash value".

The credit value is what they offer you in store credit, which can only be used in the Gamestop store. The cash value is actual cash they give you.

Gamestop wants you to buy things in their store and generate more revenue, hence why the credit value is valued much higher. However the store also sells gift cards for many places, including Amazon, Google Play, iTunes and others which since you purchase from the store you can use store credit.

With the much higher trade-in value, the current 30% bonus if you purchase a "pre-owned item" in the store, which could be $.99, and the ability to purchase Amazon and iTunes gift cards using such credit it is considered a good deal for those who want the maximum value for their device.

And no, there is never a problem with having too little cash in the register. As a reference current generation games brand new usually cost around $60, console systems cost around $250 at the moment and next generation systems will cost around $400-$500. Don't worry, if you choose to go for the cash option they'll have plenty of money in the register for you. Although it's not as good of a deal as the gift card option. ;)

Gamestop is giving $406 credit and with 30% extra trade-in, you get $527. Purchase Amazon gift cards with the credit.

Thanks for your explanation. Have you looked at the GameStop site recently? I think the bonus offer is now 50% between 10/21/13 and 11/3/13.

The 50% bonus is for game and game-related items only. The iPads, iPhones and etc it's a 30% bonus.

The question was in store. That program is not in store. You ship it to power on and they send you the gift card.

Unfortunately the amount Apple offers you on-line is NOT the same amount they give you in the store.

It's not the same supplier.

And they don't give you cash because the point of the in store iPhone program is that you spend it at Apple. In fact you spend it on a new iPhone. So they don't give you the gift card at all unless there is money left over. Which sometime tells me rarely happens because few folks downgrade their phones.

And note that power on only honors that quote if the condition is as you claim. If you say good but it's got some scratches and they call it fair they reserve the right and you agreed to give it to them, to downgrade the quote

Ahh, that makes sense.

Are there restrictions on the regular Amazon cards? I would assume you could use the regular Amazon cards on anything at amazon.com, no?

The only issue I have with buying an iPad air from Amazon is that if there is a QC defect, then I have to deal with shipping it back yadda yadda, whereas buying through Apple I could just go to the store and swap out instantly...I always hate the Apple QC lottery and lately I've been winning so I'm probably due for a loss, lol.

You can always return your iPad's to an Apple store, especially within the 1 year manufacturer warranty, no matter where you bought it.

This isn't always true. I was an assistant manager at Gamestop for 5 years. There are times when there is not enough cash to give out. It all depends on cash sales for the day. Giving out cash is at the manager's discretion.

Thank you for the tip on Amazon gift cards from Gamestop.

I traded in my Verizon iPad 3 64GB I bought Guitar Hero III (PS2) for $1.99 in order to get the 30% extra credit. With the rest of my trade funds I was able to get $450 worth of Amazon gift cards.
