Are you living under a rock ? Because the iPhone 4 is grossly underpowered compared to the 2011 smartphones.
Do we need a phone that has 200mhz extra power? I hate this philosophy in computing and seriously, do your own homework. You think it's underpowered, but it's iOS4 showing it's age from legacy parts from the first iOS.

There's nothing more powerful than that 1Ghz chip out on the market currently if you compare all the Android and WM7 phones. Most use the A8 chip (which the Apple A4 has in its own customary way).

I'd rather Apple concentrate making iOS5 much more efficient for the A4 and beyond. Yes, the Cortex A9 would give up to 2GHz and dual core. But no company yet has probably made it ready to be placed into market yet. Would there be any need for that sort of the processor for the sake of making the battery life decrease? Software development needs to be done first.

Don't jump too far yet. I'm sure we'll see iOS5 before a new phone. Especially with the CDMA version and white iPhone possibly coming out first. What's the rush?

Bad idea. Why would anyone want this? White shows smudges and markings. I own a white macbook and I will not buy another. Even if I wasn't looking at specs, I would buy the metal macbook pro for that reason alone.

Although I've discovered a "magic eraser" used dry is helpful in cleaning the white macbook. Still, I'd rather not have the white.

No more or less than the black iPhone 4. Anyway, the colour is hidden under the glass. Would make no difference.

I agree that Apple needs to give the iPhone a performance boost. Lots of great smartphones are planned for 2011. And since I am in the market for a new phone this summer, I'm looking for one major improvement with the 2011 models regarding "power" -- specifically "battery power".

I had a talk with my buddy who has an HTC Evo 4g -- he tells me he has to disconnect from the wireless network regularly to keep from running out of battery in 3 hours of standby. That's unacceptable. I told him to maybe try shutting off UI animations to save some CPU since I heard that helped some folks.

I watched my other friend do a little power-saving dance with his G2 by shutting off his GPS and various background apps whenever he put his phone away in order to save battery.

Both friends love their phone features, but they just wish they could use them longer without a recharge and without having to shut off the features.

For iPhone-5, I would like to see a dual-core CPU at 1+Ghz, 1GB RAM, WiFi Hotspot, etc, etc.... But I also don't want to have think about shutting off this that or the other constantly. On my iPhone 3Gs the only thing I concern myself with now is making sure that Navigon is not trying to use the GPS to render a 3D map of my current position while the phone is my pocket. Other than that, I am pretty good on battery power.

When I upgrade this year acceleration and top-speed will matter, but the size of the gas tank and fuel economy will matter just as much. A smartphone that is out of gas is pretty much worthless even if you have tons of processing power under the hood.

It's a style preference. Some people like white. What color are your walls? As a matter of fact, white consumer electronics are very popular in some places (Europe, Southeast Asia).

The white paint is under the glass anyhow. Perhaps Europeans and Asians are tidy and you're a slob?

Not a big deal.

Or this could all just be free 'advertising' for Best Buy, considering so many people read up on Apple rumors!

But this will prevent people who are currently looking to buy an iPhone from buying an iPhone right now.

And for those people who are repeatedly asking "why would people buy an iPhone now with iPhone 5 coming in a few months?". You'd better believe people will continue buying the iPhone 4 up to the week of iPhone 5 release, and even AFTER the release. Hell, there will still be people buying iPhone 4 next year after the release of iPhone 6!

Use your head...

Agreed 100%.

It's not about a chip that's 20% faster. The Cortex A9 architecture is 1.5 times faster, clock for clock. Combine that with the fact that there's two of them (rumored) and that the iPad needs a beefy GPU to drive all of the rumored pixels. The upgrade becomes necessary.

If Apple are considering to make the iPhone 4 a 2 year product, I'm sure the white iPhone would push sales dramatically! There's no need for an iPhone 5 in 2011. The specifications are far greater than any other phone other manufacturers make. Let them catch up and then push well ahead in 2012. I'd have no need to replace my iPhone in June/July. Why should there be an expectation? Only because the techno geeks think they need it. No you don't ;).

There's the iPad 2 and iOS 5 to concentrate on. Surely Apple don't need another iPhone device yet? And I was going to purchase a White iPhone 4. So, the rumoured release of next month fits in quite nicely for me personally.

Now that I see this, I'm inclined to think that this is a possibility (maybe not a huge one, but still a possibility). While most of the members here are no longer really interested in a white iPhone 4, I'm sure that there are countless people in the general public that are. This would really breathe a newer life into the product and carry the iPhone 4 through till next year.

There's more than 200 mhz in 2011. Do my homework ? Start by looking at the phones announced at CES on your side. If Apple waits to 2012 to update the iPhone, they will be behind (in a sense, they already are as CES announced phones will be shipping soon).

And yes, it's important that we get the extra power now. If you didn't notice, gaming is becoming increasingly important and visible on smartphones with titles by Epic and iD pushing the limits on the hardware we do have.

2011 is about the Cortex A9 dual core architecture. A8 is old news.

Okay, this is a stretch but Sprint is having an announcement on February 7th and they say it is an "industry first". The new CDMA iPhone 4 will work on Sprint's network and Apple does not have an exclusive agreement with Verizon. Does a white iPhone 4 count as an industry first??? Will David Blaine turn a black iPhone 4 into a white iPhone 4??? Okay, maybe not.

Besides, new subscribers to Verizon can order an iPhone 4 starting on February 10th. Since Verizon worked closely with Apple on this project, I would imagine that Apple would give Verizon time to sell a few iPhones before Apple added another carrier. Which makes me curious as to why the agreement isn't exclusive at least in the US???

Of course for the iPad (I really still don't believe Apple have gone to those extremes to get a Retina iPad - big selling point, but not so without a new iOS), but for the iPhone 4? Not really necessary. We're not going to get a 2x retina as 300dpi is more than enough. I can see where maybe the extra power will provide a better capability to carry better games; but at what cost? Unless Apple have a better battery to fit in the iPhone 4 (as it won't get any bigger/thicker, it won't happen yet. Or even yet, a more efficient iOS (which will be iOS5)

People talk about all these amazing phones in 2011 and from most spec's, most are using the 1Ghz chip still; especially with Android and WM7.

I'm sitting tight and sure the iPhone 5 will be a minor upgrade. A dual-core CPU in the iPhone 6? I'll bet on that :D.

Q3/Q4 2011 maybe. Even then, there might be something better Apple could hold tight for June 2012.

there isn not going to be an iphone 5 it will be the white iphone they will announce at the wwdc
So you think that Apple will quit innovating for a year, let their competitors get closer, and slap a coat of paint on something old?

What brings you to belief that they would do such a thing? Not from their historical behavior, so it must be something else.

Please let us know.

Why wouldn't they put in the iphone 5 if it was going to be available for the iPad? The market is way too volatile and a lot of market share is still up for grabs in a subscriber based market. It doesn't make sense to not upgrade the phone as well.

3G to 3GS? That's why I think we'll get a iPhone 4S with the iOS5 (and possible subtle improvements as shown on the CDMA version's metallic band) being shown off as their next big thing. At the time of the 3GS release, I'm sure Apple was waiting for the A8 for mass market profit. You could say the 3G and 3GS had a combined 2 year shelf life being pretty much the same hardware.

If you look at Apple's behaviour, it's quite predictable. The iPhone 4 is pretty much a very well rounded product that could do the same thing quite happily and last for 2 years. This time round, we have a CDMA version (and possibly white version) to take us through to an announcement in April 2012. Quite a crafty move to boost sales in 2011.

If sales are still up, why create a better product to destroy when the parts of the iPhone 4 are probably coming down in price month by month wholesale and they're making good profits? What could they add to a new iPhone in 2011 that isnt already on the iPhone 4? A time-machine?

Oh well, better late than never. Honestly, just about everything remotely associated with the iPhone 4, has been a comedy of errors. I've held off until Apple gets' their act together. In this case, I saved a bundle by sticking with my dilapidated and partially bricked 3G (thanks Steve).

well, the place i goto get my iphone 4 screen repair can replace front and back with white *seemingly oem parts.

but today when i went in they said they've been harder to get/less of them.

maybe some correlation to an authorized white release?

i'm not an analyst so obviously take my experience for what it's worth.

Do you know where I can buy the iphone 3g? Not the 3gs, but the 3g. I've looked everywhere and I really want one, but I can't find one.

You mean Apple's 2010 iPhone4 is going to be behind CES's 2011 smart phones?

Oh noes!

2011 iPhone?

Why would they launch a new phone in June if they just launched the iPhone 4 with Verizion in February. I am sure Verizion is smarter than that to piss off all of their customers just months after they bought the new phone. They would wait until June and launch the new phone, don't you think?
