I wonder why the designers decided to go with painted glass. Glass (even the hi-tech version) can be easily and homogeneously colored.

I hope I am overlooking some evident drawback linked to the dyed glass, otherwise I would be forced to admit that Apple's choice is not the best one! A paint is potentially even less scratch-resistant than glass...

Well, I figured it out: while dyed glass is surely good for the back, the color tint is not as good for the screen, unless someone wants an opaque screen...

So, Apple is right! :)

If I remember correctly, the original iPods were white and only white for a number of years. Apple didn't seem to have any problems cranking those out by the millions so why are they having such a challenging time making a white iPhone?

Clearly the guy who thinks Apple is anal has never visited Apple-related forums where 5% of the users are 100x more anal.

White iPhones are trashy looking. Man up and get black!

We learned shortly after the iPhone 3G came out that only little kids and pets bought black phones.

Men always buy white phones.

Yow

As a guy with more than a little screen printing background in his past (I used to be a graphic designer before I became an I.T. drone) I'd say "yeah, getting a consistent white bright enough from glass to glass" would be quite a challenge.

No wonder!

i wonder if apple just made a clear iphone.. not white not black just see through iphone .. would it sell?

I wonder if there's a way to remove the white paint to make your own. Like some chemical that dissolves the paint similar to furniture refinishing.

That would be very cool!

So, does anyone know if one was to return their iPhone 4 black today and just repurchase the white when it comes out that that'd be allowed?

The paint is on the inside.

"I cannot say who I am.... the color specifications for the white on the new iPhones are just crazy... talk about anal..."

That "anal" quality is why - antenna performance issues aside - Apple builds the finest consumer products in the world. Those tolerances and demands for perfection often result in cutting edge processes that can backfire. But I'll take that any day over a bland status quo that follows... rather than leads.
:apple::apple::apple:

I think the guy inside of Apple has a love for anuses.

Yeah, to go with white belts and shoes.........

Hey guys. I just left the bar where I was having a drink with Steve. He told me all the white iPhones are being hand painted which is why they will be in limited supply. That's awesome! I wonder if they will go up in value over time...

NOT FUNNY

Pity they are not always so fastidious

The obvious comment here is that if Apple had paid as much attention to function (the antenna) as they do to form (the paint and the appearance) then perhaps I would not have returned my iPhone 4 14 days after receiving it and perhaps they would not be in the deep PR s**t they are in at the moment.

i want a see through iphone with no paint. will look awesome. will also solve the hesitancy to choose between a black or white iphone.

And what would you do with it next? Start adding purple/blue/green etc. LED lighting bars inside for that extra teenage, PC gaming case feeling?

Ewwwwww...

I think the world seen enough of that, thank you.

yeah! only macho men here! who would buy a white consumer electronic anyway?! no one bought those silly MacBooks or iPods or PowerBooks!

Whenever possible, i bought black.

White macbook, ok, but the white iphone is so much disco. I will smash any white iphone I´ll encounter!! :D

Just kiddin´, but although I don´t see myself as a macho, I´d never go with a white phone. Just like I´d never go with a pink t-shirt or sit down when pissing.
And my girlfriend, too, says the white iphone looks totally gay.
But i don´t know: my brother actually IS gay and he ordered black :p

forgive my ignorance, but can AT&T customers order phones from an Apple store as an upgrade? I have been waiting on the white one to come out and AT&T will not allow preorders at this time. Thanks

Yes, you can. The Apple store will ask for your phone number and a few other pieces of information to access your account and apply any discounts you're entitled to, and will update your contract. You'll activate it thru iTunes when you receive it.
