true, but you cannot deny potential sales will be lost from people who cant wait and will go for a different phone.

my contract is up in June, and i will be pissed if i have to wait until september.

You should contact apple... Im sure theyll change everything to match your upgrade cycles

There's people still happy to go for a 3GS even today over the 4 so what is people's problem that some will still want to go for a 4 when the 5 is out albeit in white and 10 months late? FFS, shut up and quit your moaning.

It's a f_ _ _ _ng free world.

Your rebuttel makes no sense. He's not talking just about himself but in general about the risk of defection among people that arent willing to wait. Himself being an example.

With the fierce competition iOS faces from android right now and maybe also nokia by then, you seem like a fanboy out of touch with the present market reality. You can be sure he wont be the only one pondering this. Very risky move from apple if they would delay the next iphone IMNSHO.

So what do you guys think about this:

My girlfriend's babysitt-ee kicked her 3GS in the bathtub a few months ago and she's been using a 2G, original iPhone ever since, and was hoping that she could get a white iP5 this summer. So now she's pretty excited about a white iP4 coming out, and would be ok with getting it if it weren't for the uncertainty about the release of the iP5 (I guess I've made her into a refresh-watcher).

She's eligible for an upgrade and would definitely do so if the iP5 is going to be pushed later in the year rather than the summer (she can't wait to stop using the old iPhone). What do people think? Take the chance and get the white 4?

Yeah, I think they knew from the first day of launching the iPhone 4 that there was no way they would be able to launch the 5 on time so they purposely held back on the white one to keep interest in the 4 while we have to wait longer.

They planned it this way

I believe you're exactly correct!

However my theory is just a bit different.

I think they blew it so bad with the white phone, that by the time they finally got it "good enough" they shelved it.

Then when it became apparent that there would not be an iPhone 5 in June or July, they dusted off the white phone to foist off on their customers.

Apple always seeking the spotlight and forever the master marketers, see this as a way to buy time. It will give them an opportunity to fix the problems their having with iPhone 5.

The new target date of Nov or Dec is their focus. One that hopefully will not drag on till Q1 of 2012.

No matter when they release a new phone, there are going to be people who are still under contract, close to being out, have been out for a while, etc. etc. The phones sell year round. The danger zone of people who may jump ship while waiting applies only to those who's contract expires around the time of the year that they have released new phones in the past. I know it's not unreasonable to suspect that the the bulk of people with iPhones have contracts that expire in that time frame, but I've never seen any numbers to confirm or contradict that. It also ignores subsidy policies/release schedules for countries outside the US.

I really don't give a **** about white or iPhone 5.
I use year old HTC Desire and black iP4 and they hold just fine...
All I hope for is that they fix that archaic ass iOS. if they do it right iP4 will be good enough for another 24 months.

I don't see any risk. Apple buyers are sufficiently ignorant of other choices, and too vain to be seen with anything without the Apple logo to prove their cool.

They will, as the white holdouts, wait for an unreasonable amount of time. Even if at their own expense. Apple had them right where they want them. waiting with baited breath.

Yep! I think Apple nailed itself on this one, it they arent gonna come out with iPhone 4 this summer, this will be a way to increase sales until then. Besides, its like the Wii getting a new color and everybody goes crazy for it bcus its the first time they've done it.

I think the next iPhone won't be called the 'iPhone 4' that would be confusing.
Maybe they will call it the 'iPhone 4 II'

So what will happen? I guess its just avoiding competition, last year you guys remember all those Android phones coming out? Evo 4G, Galaxy S, Droid Incredible? By moving it they'll have more room during the holidays, iPhone is the new iPod these days.

Seriously, I don't think you youngin's get it.
Apple doesn't compete with anyone.
They just do their own thing.
Really.
For the first fifteen years they didn't even have commercials.
Then when they did, they just did them for fun.

You see how they show them off at the keynotes.
They are so proud of them. They don't even try to sell the product.
They just point the camera at the new thing and spin it around.
And Cut!

They don't care about Android, they don't even care about stock prices or profits.
I have never seen any change in how they act.

The first 10 years of Apple's existence they were drowning in money
Then in the mid nineties they had only a little to work with.
Now they are drowning in money again
I saw no change in their behavior at all.
They just make fewer mistakes now.
And as always, they do their own thing.

imho they have to release the iphone 5 in the summer, cuz many contracts will ending at this time.

It's not like your phone will stop working when your contract expires. iPhone lovers will wait until the next one comes out, even if their contract has expired. If they can't wait they'll just buy an iPhone 4, considering one's contract wouldn't expire this summer if they already have an iPhone 4.

Wrong.

Expiry has nothing to do with it. As an account holder with four iPhones, my line is elligible for upgrade every year.
I have an iPhone 4, I'm upgrade eligible on June 11th.

Where's my iPhone 5, Apple?

A little off topic here, but I would like to add a comment about the white iPhone 4. Sounds like a cool idea, but don't put a clear case on it. I have a clear case and tons of crap builds up between the case and the phone. This would look absolutely horrific and disgusting with a white background.

Your plan for upgrading is with your cell phone provider, right? Most likely the answer is yes - but Apple is not responsible for fulfilling your cell phone promise of upgrades every year. Thats between you and your cell phone provider... Harsh as it may sound..

Since Apple are releasing the white iPhone 4 soon, I doubt Apple will be pushing out an iPhone 5 between now and end of summer..

I was thinking of selling my iPhone 4 and using the money to buy a white iPhone 4, put it in an otterbox and keep it in perfect shape then sell it when iPhone 5 is released. I've owned a lot of iPhones since day one and for some reason the white iPhones have a higher resale value than the black ones.

How do people do this and get around the 2 year contract renewal with ATT?

I don't really mind when the 5th iPhone comes out, it will release when it releases. I do plan to sidegrade to the white iPhone 4, can't wait. Simply put my black iPhone 4 on ebay or craigslist and take the cash from that and buy an unlocked iPhone 4 white from AT&T. I always forget that the iPhones are worth more than the contract price on the secondary market.

So as long as I don't turn the line off, just switch the hardware, it's a non-issue contract wise. I've wanted the white phone from the get go.

Plus it's been less than a year since the iPhone 4 was released!
It amazes me people expect an upgrade every year, when for so many years it took two to three years to see a cell phone upgrade or change (the razor).

I'm in the same boat. I'm using a 3G with cracked screen and other issues. I originally wanted the white iPhone 4, but held out and decided to just wait until the 5. Now that the white 4 is definitely coming out and the 5 is possibly delayed I am thinking about grabbing the white 4. I will be really disappointed if the 5 ends up coming out in June/July though. It doesn't seem likely, but you never know. I figure I'll see what the latest rumors are at the time of the white launch - assuming there isn't anything pointing to a summer release of the 5, I'm just going to go for it.
