I'm in the same boat. I'm using a 3G with cracked screen and other issues. I originally wanted the white iPhone 4, but held out and decided to just wait until the 5. Now that the white 4 is definitely coming out and the 5 is possibly delayed I am thinking about grabbing the white 4. I will be really disappointed if the 5 ends up coming out in June/July though. It doesn't seem likely, but you never know. I figure I'll see what the latest rumors are at the time of the white launch - assuming there isn't anything pointing to a summer release of the 5, I'm just going to go for it.

Plus you can just sell the 4 on ebay or something, if the iPhone 5 comes out soon there after. It'll fetch the same price or a little less than the iPhone 5's non-contract price. So you can just buy a non-contract iPhone 5 and use that as the hardware on your current iPhone line. It's one way to get around renewing your contract for 2 more years and paying fees.

This whole thing about the iphone 5 coming out in June...oh wait...maybe not until late September...oh wait...maybe not until fiscal year end 2012, and now the white iPhone 4 (which I held out for) has really really thrown a monkey wrench in my update plans! Ugggggggggggggggggg!

But aren't you just assuming that there will be a "No Contract" price option either on the white iP4 or 5 for that matter?
Please correct me if I am wrong but there never used to bea no contract option. That was something that came to be later on and there is no guarantee that it will be available on the new phones. RIGHT?

Apple's secretiveness certainly has a negative impact when there are long term contracts involved in purchasing decisions.

I am just curious as to how the roadmap for future iteration of iPhone will go.
If iPhone 5 is late-September early-October, does it mean iPhone 6 will be the same time in 2012, or skip to Summer 2013?

See that's exactly what I thought too at first. Apple and AT&T when the iPhone 4 first launched didn't advertise it anywhere. Until I was actually in the AT&T store at launch, the employee at the counter at first said my line wasn't available for a contract upgrade. I was about to leave when he said wait we can offer you a non-contract phone that can be used on your current line.

So while it's not advertised in the papers, it's actually been offered since Day 1. Both Apple online, instore, At&t, and I am going to assume verizon; all offer non-contract versions of the iPhone 4. I am pretty sure they will continue this practice.

Sure it's a risky bet, but if it works out to be the case for the 5 and white iPhone 4; wouldn't be great?

My gues is there never were any issues with the paint... They knew that the iPhone 5 wasn't going to come after the regular year so they needed something to keep us happy... The white iPhone 4 seems to be the perfect happy maker (to atleast some people).... What it comes down to is that the iPhone 5 is going to have to be out of this world for people to not loose faith in it... Which isn't such a bad thing is suppose... Thoughts anyone?

OMG the telephone is white! OK, can MACrumors focus on macs now and leave iOS devices for a while??

Haha. I don't know where you've been for the last 1-2 years, but iOS dominates 95% of MacRumors. It's what sells (page views) man!

I think any iPhone 5-type upgrade would be incremental, like the 2G to 3G. 3G to 3GS was actually a significant upgrade hardware wise, and then the 3GS to 4 was also a significant upgrade as well. I think the iPhone 5 would maybe get an an A5 but I'm not sure of what else. Apple (and the public) seems really happy with the 4's design and I don't think they'll want to deviate from that too soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if they moved the iPhone refreshes to the fall. That way, they have hype and lines going almost all year, and especially into the holidays.

Announcement

April 26: "Hello Apple Fans, we are proud to announce to you..................................... the white iphone. Available to you in a month, and to 26 more countries in two months.

Thank you"

Lte... Lte... Lte.

Apple is playing the cards right... the consumers will be fooled, and purchase the white iPhone... all while not realizing that Apple has made a strategic business decision to look towards LTE, and wait for the next big release of the iPhone with 4G from Verizon & AT&T.

Apple is waiting on AT&T... been trying to tell you guys in other posts.

The iPhone 4 is one of Apple's biggest money producing products to date - Glass on the front & back ehhh...

Think people.

Apple has done it again. Maxed profits & cut margins, all while gaining momentum with the consumer.

They make products that sell(max profits), instead of making products for the user like we remember Apple. Not one Apple product get's overstocked... Not ONE!

I think if the iPhone 5 isn't announced in June, Apple will likely announce one in time for the holidays. I think that Apple wants to take advantage of the holiday season to market the new iPhones rather than the summer. Though either way, people will be lining up in droves to get one.

Apple Psychologists & Marketing Watching Closely

How long can you promise a product and string people along before something happens (loss of interest, peasants storm Cupertino castle demanding it, competitor tries to fill gap, etc.).

What a joke this whole "white" piece of plastic is...

already have a white back for my iPhone 4. At this point. Not interested in all in purchasing a white iPhone 4. No point at all.

Exactly ! They keep us guessing and have us run countless buying equations in our minds. It can be quite irritating sometimes even to the Apple faithful.

I admit I'm afraid they could do that... I'm hoping for a speedy availability but this April 26 date reported by iPhoneItalia seems optimistic. Guess only time will tell.

Pandering to Apple only proves to them, people will settle for anything.

I think it will be bigger leap than you think.
If it is just incremental, they would be on time for another upgrade for June.

I'm not gonna lie

As much as I'm the type of person to wait for the new tech to come out before I make a purchase, especially with the IP5 due in 6ish months, I'm really considering getting the White IP4. My current phone is definitely on its last legs and I don't know if I can wait long enough before needing a new one.

And as other posters have said, not every consumer keeps up with the latest Apple rumors. A very small fraction of the populace is aware than a 5th gen iphone is even in development. You can't blame Apple for milking the Iphone 4 for all its worth.
