Since it goes everywhere with me and gets such heavy use (ballooning, travel, work, etc), I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing that if something stupid happens I have a replacement for $150 AppleCare+ plus $49 fee) instead of the $900 it initially cost.

Better not drop it from a balloon. Remember, the broken iPad needs to be in one piece.:D

LOL! Luckily it stays in the chase vehicle as maps for the crew to follow. :) I do know a few balloonists that use MotionX GPS and fly with theirs, but to me that's just a recipe for smushing it if you have a hard landing. I use my iPhone for flight recording when I'm in the air. (And a Garmin 60csx)

I decided on getting Apple Care+ because it covers accidental damage. My credit card only covers accidental damage / theft or loss for 90 days after purchase date.

Too bad you have to pay a deductible if its accidentally damaged.

My brother bought a MBP, after the factory warranty expired his logic board failed. A logic board is one of the most expensive parts to replace, so in that case Apple Care paid for its self!

I bought AppleCare+... but not until 'after the fact.'

Call it what you will... I took it in and they told me $290 to replace my broken 3 for a new one... I was still within the 30 days so I called 1-800-MY-APPLE and added it to my iPad with no issues.

Don't mean to spark a debate, but I did it!

Interesting. I was told if you didnt buy it when purchasing the ipad, you had to bring it in to be inspected (within 30 days) before they activate Applecare +

Add me to the list that decided to go with the AppleCare+ after my launch day purchase due to the 'accidental' coverage. Also, I think that Apple will be less forgiving now...
I actually just got back from the store from adding A+.
I have had no issues with my iPad1, but how lucky do I feel?
The accidental is what sold me.
But honestly, I do not trust the new iPad. I do not know why. I just feel the screen is due to fail, and/or the heat will destroy something else.
I went with the extra year of coverage because something inside of me just tells me this iPad is gonna be acting up big time down the road.
Anyone else have a weird feeling about the ipad3 for some reason?

Companies don't sell warranty's unless it is a good deal for them. Since it is a good deal for them, that means it is a bad deal for me.

In case of consumer electronics, you are better off putting $100 in a bank somewhere, and in the off chance you need it, you pull it out. Be your own insurance company.

That's just my opinion as someone who can afford to replace a device, or could live without it. I can't afford to pay $100,000 to someone if I crash into their car and kill someone; hence I have insurance to cover me. I can afford $800 at the worst case.

For the credit card warranty... I thought mine had it but it is only for world traveler mastercards....

Bought it yesterday, went to the apple store and bought it there... Took 5 min. After 24hrs it's still not activated yet... And I too come from the first iPad and never had any problem. The new iPad is way more fragile than the first one, and I have no case on the new one, just the smart cover, but the first iPad I have the black apple case that really protects the device all way around, so didn't need apple care for it.

If you go to the Apple site you will see that you have the option to call within 30 days.

$100 initially then $50 for brand new iPad should anything happen(accidental and liquid)

No guarantee of a new unit. Right now they are new but in a month they will be refurbs.

It's cheaper to take the $100 you would spend on Apple Care plus the $50 deductible and put it in the back. Sell your iPad 3rd gen next year before the 4th gen announcement for top dollar. Take the $150 in the bank that would have gone to Apple Care + proceeds from the iPad sale and buy a brand new iPad 4th gen. You'll get another full year warranty plus all the new goodies in the 4th gen.

I've done this with the iPad and iPad 2. Works out very well.

i think it really depends on which iPad model you get. if you get the base iPad with wifi for $500. I don't really see the point. You spend 1/5 of the price to get apple care and then have to spend another 1/10 of the price to for replacement.

if you get the 64 gig with LTE it makes more sense in my mind.

I bought it and so should you. You never know if an accident may happen. Even if you are careful and responsible, what if your friend or family member accidentally drops it and damages it?

I stopped buying AppleCare. Was a waste of money. With the money I have already spent on AppleCare for previous devices, I could have purchased and entirely new iPad 64 GB LTE.

Now I use my AMEX card and put my iPad in a good case. That's my AppleCare. Oh, and don't drop the dang thing. :)

I agree with this approach. Visa and MC have about the same warranty protection, I believe. One free extra year, and for about $67 a total of 4 years from date of purchase. No deductible in all cases. But granted, covers only product failure and not accidental damage.

I don't understand those who use cases that provide minimal or no protection, including Apple's own Smart Cover. Even more so those who don't use a case at all. No wonder extra money has to be spent on AppleCare+. Quality cases like Piel Frama completely envelope the iPad, so if dropped or banged, will more than likely survive with no injury. I'd rather spend money on a quality, well-cushioned case for good protection than on AppleCare+.

If you got the 4G model and you plan on taking it everywhere with yo like I do it is worth it. I am fearless about sticking this thing into a bag now.

Same here. I find myself taking the new iPad to work with me more now that I have AppleCare+.

I thought so too. However, when I called Apple this past Monday, I was transferred right over to the AC agreement dept. where a rep had it added to my iPad within 5 minutes. I also received my AC+ agreement in a email within one hour after the call.

I never buy it. I figure if I upgrade every year and sell the old one, I'm always covered by the factory warranty and the cost of the depreciation on the old one is just a little bit more than the Applecare and I get to enjoy the latest and greatest.

I used my Amex for my iPad...can you elaborate on what kind of warranty/coverage it provides? (I'm using blue cashback)

And no I didn't get AppleCare. I know I probably should have but it's hard to justify the cost after spending so much upfront on this new toy  I just tell myself that I'm going to be super careful...

It adds a year to your warranty (and gives you a 90 return window).

How long does it take to activate? Still didn't get no email, and when I check my warranty with my serial number it's still says march 15 2013...

I bought it.. If not for anything else but the peace of mind that came with it!
1st ipad.....No regrets.. :)

I picked up my 3rd and finally perfect iPad on March 24th. My warranty shows good through 2014. Not sure if it was less than 5 days as I hadn't checked until now. I'd inquire if I were you

Since I have wi-fi only and am very careful, did not buy. In reality it does cost $148 ($99 upfront + $49 per incident).

I am a believer in AppleCare. It's one of the areas that Apple excels in. My personal practice is to purchase it with every new Apple laptop I buy.

When it comes to pads, pods & phones, I choose not to buy AppleCare, since I don't keep them long enough to make it worthwhile. In addition I'm willing to risk accidental damage, since I've never had any.

In the event I damage one at this point I've saved enough by not buying AppleCare for these devices, I'm still ahead if I had to pay to replace one.

I may consider spending $140 on AppleCare for a $2200 iMac but no way will I spend what's effectively $150 on AppleCare on a $470 purchase. The risk/ reward factor makes one a worthy buy and the other redonkulous.

Just got off the phone with Apple about their AppleCare. I take very good care of my things, especially of my electronics. I'm not perfect and accidents can happen, and well now I won't really have to worry when one of my kids pick up the iPad to play a game or whatever the case may be. In the end to each their own, I decided to purchase AppleCare for the piece of mind. I'm content. :apple:
