The Yoga 3 is the same price $1299. I didn't mean there was any one laptop that was thinner and lighter, although the Lenovo LaVie HZ550 and HZ750 will change that in May. I was just saying that Apple's claim they couldn't add card readers or ports to the Macbook because of its small size was garbage because there are thinner laptops out with card readers and ports.

Apple said that???

But that's what the your statement literally stated was that there are smaller, lighter, etc. etc. and cheaper laptops with ports. There are not. Their are some that are thinner, but overall size they are not. Cheaper? Sure the Asus is cheaper, but having used many Asus products I can tell you they are not anywhere near the build quality and are still bigger (overall dimensions) and heavier.

The LaVie is going to be smaller and lighter, but again more expensive (when you move to the 750 which then has the same specs as the Macbook).

The Macbook is impressive for what it is. The one port stinks sure. But it allotted Apple to put a battery into it that is larger than ANY of the laptops mentioned here with an additional 3 hours of battery life (Oh and Apple has a reputation of being accurate with their battery life unlike many other manufacturers).

I'm not buying one. I'm perfectly happy with my (almost) maxed out 2013 MBA for at least another year. At that point I would more than likely go to a 13" rMBP as that fits my needs more than a super thin and light laptop for the same price.

----------

Yeah, but both have larger footprints and are heavier? The guy is just trying to hold you to your comment. These do have larger, higher resolution touch displays (for extra money, making them more expensive than the MB in those configurations) but they aren't at the same time thinner and lighter and smaller? Maybe we are being too literal with your statement?

Thanks for backing me up. I am just trying to hold him to his original comment which taken at what he said literally, he is has yet to find one that meets all criteria....

The 2015 ATIV 9 has 10.5 hours according to Samsung.

You didn't read much I guess. The Zenbook is an all aluminum build and the Yoga 3 is aluminum and steel. Also, lets not forget these offer a larger AND higher quality (QHD) displays then the Macbook.

Asus Zenbook is 12,3mm all over but the Macbook is 3,5-13,1mm.
The same with the Lenovo Yoga Pro.

About getting the new MacBook? First off let me mention that I like Apple products and have been buying them ever since I was a teenager. I had an iPod Classic, 2 iPod Touch, iPad 3, iMac, 11" MacBook Air, iPhones, iPod Touch 5G, not to mention the many Apple peripheral products and accessories. Now I currently use an iPhone 6, iPad Mini Retina, 15" MBP Retina, I still have all the Apple products I mentioned earlier although I don't use them anymore. When Apple announced the new MacBook, I was very excited and was seriously planning on getting one April 10th even after I've seen the price tags and specs.

However, two days ago it all of a sudden hit me that I should not get the new MacBook. Even though I can afford one. I've started contemplating. I think it's not worth it at all for the price Apple is asking for it. The 512GB version costs $1,715 at my local Apple Store as opposed to the price in the US, which is $1,599. And the base model costs $1,415 ($1,299 in the US Apple Store). Seriously, don't you think it's wrong of Apple to sell the new MacBook at these prices? Don't you think Apple has gotten too greedy?

I do get what you mean. If you already have a perfectly capable Mac, then there's no reason to jump on the first gen. I, however, am doing just that primarily because I travel so much.

Most of the review sites put it at more like 7.5
Can you post some links? I'm surprised that there are reviews given that it hasn't been released yet.
and it's heavier than the rMB. I'd hope at a almost a pound heavier it would have a bigger battery...
Not sure where you are getting your numbers, but it's 2.09 pounds vs. the Macbook's 2.03 according to Samsung:

pretty much the same thing except with slightly better screen, more ports, Windows 8.1 (ugh), worse processor (0.8MHz turbo to 2.0MHz) and better camera for $100 more.

I'll still take an Mac any day over this but that's my preference. I like the Apple ecosystem much better than windows.

I'm a long time Apple customer and shareholder that's purchased nearly every new Apple laptop, using it for work year after year.

When I saw the new model initially I just automatically decided to buy one as usual. But then the very next day I did something I haven't done, I decided that even though I too can easily afford it, this is one model I'm going to pass on.

Apple's always been greedy in my opinion, but this time they're pushing it too much. I'm going to let others fill Apple's coffers.

pretty much the same thing
Yep.

BTW, I was wrong, it is actually in stock now e.g. at Amazon:

Same here. I much prefer to have a real shell with all the Unix tools on my computer. ;) That's pretty much the only thing that keeps me from getting the Samsung after the disappointment about the Macbook (which is almost unusable to me because of the lack of ports). The hardware is very nice though:

He's right you know:

You're basically asking for the price to fit your budget. Apple sells what they can at the price they think the market will bear. Time will tell if this rMB will sell well. If it doesn't, they will lower the price just like they did when the iPhone 1 was introduced.

You're just not pleased with the high pricing; sorta like asking why can't I buy a BMW 3 series for the same price as a Honda Accord coupe since both cars use gas, both cars have 4 wheels, and both cars can get me from point A to point B. You can't just make up scenarios like if such and such didn't exist, etc.

Either you pony up the cash and buy one or you move along and window shop. That's the way the world works, my friend ;)

Or asking why people would pay close to $1,000 for a 4G 128GB iPad with no keyboard! If you figure $100-$200 for one of those slim iPad keyboards your up at the same price as the new MacPad! Plus you would need batteries for the bluetooth keyboard etc. The MacPad comes with an attached keyboard with all new keypress architecture, then theres the Al A Luminum forged case! Also, picture yourself at Starbucks, center seating with your GOLD MacPad - no one else in the joint has one! Think dates man, women will want you! Just get the MacPad, load it up! YOLO right? I don't know, can it play games like candy crush?

I'm an Apple shareholder too and I will gladly fill their coffers on this one. :)

Quite a lot users doubt some specs of gen1 rNB, though it is truly a wonderful machine, for tech reasons, waiting for following gens.

I don't imagine that the profit margins on the new MacBook are vastly dissimilar to any of their other product lines.

First generation of a new line is always going to cost more to manufacture than simply the sum of its parts (a lot of which are also engineered from the ground up in this case) due to manufacturing processes that may be new to the manufacturing plant.

New battery fabrication, new keyboard, new body, etc etc. It all costs more money to engineer and fabricate a brand new component than one that's been around a few years or is shared by different products.

Apple will spend the time between gen1 and gen2 driving up manufacturing efficiency and driving down cost of materials/components, resulting in a more "reasonably priced" product (quotes because reasonably priced has not been part of Apple's business model in living memory).

In the meantime, if price is an issue, gen1 is not for you (and likely was never intended to be). It's a great product, but I'll likely be waiting for gen2 for tech reasons rather than cost.

I will buy both if generation #2 will carry a substantial improvement.

We don't have taxes here.

Why do you think the price is unreasonable? It is priced very competitively agains similar machines. Or do you mean that its too expensive given its performance?

Yes, for a machine with that performance and a single port, it is overly priced.

Irrespective of your feelings towards the hardware, there's nothing wrong with being more conservative and arguably more sensible with your money.

Thank you.

America needs more heroes like you.

The 13" MBA with 8GB/256GB is $1299. Yes, MBA has a bigger screen but the rMB is much higher in resolution.

The only difference here is performance but Core M chips do not cost much less than the chips in the MBA. Core M is not inferior, it just has different tradeoffs. Broadwell-U is faster but it also consumes 3x more power.

Another reason why the rMB seems overpriced is because Apple didn't release a low end version. Based on Apple pricing, a 4GB/128GB model would be $999. And many people would be perfectly happy with that. But Apple is limiting Gen 1 to high end, most likely due to early production constraints. It will get to $999 eventually.

My point is, rMB does not have a much higher margin than anything else Apple is selling.

What tradeoffs? Dude, the rMB doesn't even surpass the rMBP 13 in battery life considering how the intel core M processor runs on 5watts. The new rMBP 13 has way more computing power, better iGPU, and sports 10 hours web/12 hours mp4 video playback.

The only tradeoff buying the rMB is paying $1299 for one and $1599 for a weak upgrade (512GB SSD). Sure the thing is lightweight and completely all metal but seriously, you gotta be kidding me if you think this rMB is not high margin profits for apple. 2/3 smaller logic board, less aluminum, cheaper screen panel pricing (lower res) and of course let's not forget no ports except a mic and a USB-c and lastly the lowly 480p camera that's gonna break the bank for apple

If you can afford to buy one more power to you but if you think this rMB at this price point is worth it over any rMBP 13 (2015 model), you are illogical. Even though we're talking 1.5lbs heavier at most, the rMBP is already very light. Don't even compare to MBA that thing is on its way out the door soon enough. TN panel in 2015 is a laughing stock.

I will wait and see in person how good this 12" rMB really is. I really think it's just an iPad AIR with a permanent keyboard running OS X.

There is a lot of hate in your words. Just say "It's not for me" and move on. It's perfect for many people who highly value portability like me.

For me it is an incredible deal, extremely cheap (would have paid twice the price) and very good portability which is the overall biggest factor for me. As it is a business notebook it will pay for itself in a few days, even less if you count in the tax break.

For others that might be a completely different thing. And then something like the 13 MPro might be a better deal.

Mirrors my thinking exactly, perfect for an ultra portable business machine, I will retain the MBPr`s for any heavy lifting.

Don't you think Apple has gotten too greedy?

This is the silliest thing i have read in a good while. It's a company, not some gold chain wearing used car salesman.

Pick the product you like, that's fine. Assigning imaginary emotions to companies just doesn't make sense.

I think it should be very good as a college machine as well. I often have a ton of sheet music in my bag. Carrying around extra weight can be annoying. This little thing should be a joy.

Lol. What's wrong with some of you people? "How can you call a company that runs a business greedy??", "How can a company be greedy, I don't get it??", "It's silly to call a company greedy", etc., etc.

Don't know what's difficult to comprehend for some of you here. Companies can be/get greedy, it's not an opinion that should express shock and be defensive of.

Also, there are many who share a similar opinion and a lot of them are Apple users.

Apple's Greed Is Making My iPhone Worse

I hate that Apple is making my iPhone less useful to make itself richer. And I hate that a company I otherwise deeply admire on so many levels, would pursue a money-driven policy that is so clearly anti-customer.

This is a different story, but I actually don’t think Apple’s profit obsession is good for shareholders like me. By keeping its prices so high, I think Apple is being shortsighted and trading off long-term value for short-term profit. I actually wish Apple would behave more like Amazon, and focus on the long-term.

Apple Is Being Greedy

Apple does not have to sell parity products at super-premium prices. It does not need to make so much money. Apple is so fantastically profitable, and so unfathomably rich, that it can easily afford to reinvest some of its profits in lowering its gadget prices or investing more aggressively in the development of future products

But purely to protect its already insanely high profit margins, Apple is no longer offering the best products at the best price.

It's offering similar (at best) products at significantly higher prices. (This is now true in both smartphones and tablets.)

Apple, in short, is being short-term greedy.

This greed and stubbornness might make Apple's stock trade at a slightly higher price for as long as Apple can maintain its staggering profitability.

But even if Apple does not get completely marginalized, this strategy will likely hurt the company and its shareholders (and its customers!) over the long haul.

And it could be disastrous.
