    No.
There is no database saved locally ON YOUR PHONE with tens of thousands of songs.
Such feature doesn't work magically without connecting to remote servers but believe whatever you want.

Does the squeezy thingie work with cases? I can see the self-programmable real button that someone mentioned being more useful than squeezing the phone itself.

Shazam server? That makes sense then.
Unless it magically did it without any connection to any server via FM/AM frequencies compared to worldwide radio stations playing:D

This is absolutely true. It has to connect to a remote server.

    Its clearly 2 step

    • On device Machine Learning detects the music thats playing and matches it to a database of tens of thousands of sound patterns on your Pixel 2 smartphone.

    • send said data above to company like Shazam.

We had 'slide rules' at school when I was a kid and even I can work this out!

    So just to be clear.
Do you still think it doesnt contact a remote server or not?

I'm not so sure adding that function would make the iPhone better. It seems like when HTC added it to their U11 phone, it made the phone structurally weaker compared to the previous version of the phone which didn't have the "squeeze" function.

The bend test and analysis of the HTC U11 takes place from around the 4:30 mark.

Techradar are reporting it as using some kind of on-phone database.

It's connects to a database, which is periodically updated and stored locally on your phone. It's not remotely connecting to a database on a server each time it hears a song. It's connecting to a database stored locally, and said database is periodically updated over the weeks, months, etc.

the Unbox Therapy hands-on video tested this.

You don't think the TrueDepth camera is innovation? We now have the equivalent of a kinect in a phone. Along with Face ID, this should open up some major innovations from developers using the technology.

How many GB's would that audio database saved on your device would be?
Cause there is millions of songs out there.
If it saves and updates all those audio files on the phone itself periodically it could be huge amounts of data.

I wonder what else Google listens for besides song data. They can always be using your voice, conversations, and whatever else it can actually listen to all day at anytime. As long as my phone is around, I wouldnt want it actively listening until I unlock the device which I do currently for OK Google.

Government agencies can do that and have been doing it for a long time now ;)
They dont have to bug you or stick a tracker on your car. They got you 24/7 under surveillance if they want to.

I’m going to assume that a database of patterned algorithms takes up a lot less space than a database full of MP3 files. As in minimal space otherwise it would not be feasible for them to do this.

That's what I figured and maybe just the newest/popular sound files to compare the audio to.
Im sure it wont recognize everything playing or different language songs etc....
Such small database saved on the phone would be pretty limited.

The screenshot in the article below indicates the app that does the work consumes 2.54mb of storage. Not sure if that encompasses the database as well, or if that’s purely just that app’s storage and the database is separate.

Interesting, but yes 2.5mb is nothing.
I doubt that's the database it compares the sounds to find the audio info ;)
