I don't see anything wrong with the OP's picture, unless he's planning to look at white screens all the time.

to me the left side and bottom (basically in an "L" shape) are very noticably darker than the upper right portion of the screen; this would bother me.

unfortunately with iOS 7+ we have not choice to look at white screens, i.e., the backgrounds of many apps are white, like mail, calendar, contacts, ibooks, etc.

I have a series of photos I got from somewhere on the Net when I got my first iPad years ago. Red, white, green, blue and black which I use to test every iPad I have ever bought.
Excellent way as far as I am concerned to check for all those nasty things you can get on any screen. All good on my new iPad Air 2!

I just got mine today. I feel like I have slight book spine, but I have color blindness. My friend says she can see anything so maybe it's just me.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call my screen "perfect" - but it's a heck of a lot better than the one on my iPhone 6. The phone's display is a bit cooler, except near the top, where it's nearly yellow. I don't see this kind of lack of uniformity on the Air 2. No dead pixels, no book spine, maybe just a little warmer than I'd like but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

look hard enough and you can see the outline of Richard Nixon's face...point being don't stare too hard trying to find a problem. If it doesn't jump out at you, it's probably not there.

But I did notice it on the set up screen. That's why I asked my friend, but she can't see anything, so it must be me.

Actually reading black text on a white background makes a lack of uniformity stand out more. That's my test. Nothing like reading a book or article and going from a white background to noticeably darker one or worse - a cigarette-stained yellowish color.

I have 5 photos I got from somewhere on the Net when I got my first iPad some years ago which I use to check the screen display of every iPad since then.
They are white, green, blue, red and black. I can display them full screen and look for any of the nasties the can affect an iPad screen. Probably not 100% accurate but they give me peace of mind that the display/screen in question shows nothing obviously amiss.
My new iPad Air 2 looks great!

Mine is perfect, IMO, or at least as good as one can expect from a screen. It's a tad cool, but my ipad 4 was a tad warm and it was never a problem. I'd prefer a perfectly neutral, perfectly evenly lit screen with pure whites and blacks, but we're not there yet for that tech, at least at a reasonable price.

9 times out of 10, if you're looking for it, you'll see something. And even if you think you're not looking, if you're on these forums and hearing folks talk about seeing issues, a part of your brain is looking for it.

Don't be on the settings screen when looking for yellowing. I'm convinced the green icons for settings and facetime trick your eyes into seeing yellow.

OP, that screen is terrible. You should return it as fast as you can. Run, don't walk.

By the way, my iPad Air 2 screen is perfect.

My screen is even more beautiful than my iPad 3's was when I first got it! I did do some minor test for dead pixels and found nothing. This is by far the best iDevice that I have ever used. I feel sorry for those of you who have had problems. This thing is amazing! My 6 plus is pretty jealous now I'm sure but I just can't put this thing down!! :D

I picked up my Air 2 this morning after trading in my iPad2. My first impression was about the resolution, very sharp and clear. My second was the screen had a greyness to it, and it's going to take some getting used to. I adjusted the brightness but left auto on. A few hours later, I ended up turning off auto-adjust. It wanted to auto-adjust so dark I was having trouble reading. Third, I use my iPad in the car. I drive around all day for work. It was a very bright sunny day, and about an hour in, I realized I didn't have to use my hand or something else to shade the screen, like I did with my iPad2. So, I love the anti-glare properties. I was surprised because the screen is so shiny still. When the screen is black, as in off, it does seem to show fingerprints more, but I don't see any when the screen is on and bright, which is when it counts.

Now I'm at home relaxing, and it's a pleasure to read on.

Some improvements are a bit of a trade-off. Sometimes, it just requires a little brain adjustment. I'm very happy.

I've owned every single iPad.

The iPad Air 2 has the best screen yet.

Perfection. And magic.

I do notice a slight vibrance jump from my iPad 3. Also, apps like Sky Guide that have been optimized for 64-bit show much more detail on the Air 2 than they did on my iPad 3.

This is the best photo I could get of my iPad Air 2 at full brightness in a dark room and an example of why it is hard to judge someone's screen from a photo here. My screen has a VERY faint bookspine on the left 1/8 inch of the screen but none of the shadows that show up in the picture. I think people need to judge their own screen and whether they are ok with it or not. Some will probably think my screen is perfect and others will think that it is totally unacceptable based on this photo.

Welcome to the club

My iPad 3 had a cool but otherwise perfect screen. My iPad 4 took one return to get an acceptable screen (yellowing). My iPad air had the dreaded book spine effect and a bit of yellowing too but I made peace with it. My iPad air 2 suffers from both book spine and yellowing. Already made an appointment to the genius bar.

Just a thought: unless your local Apple stores don't have any new ones in stock, I'd recommend just returning this one and purchasing a new one rather than hassle with the Genius Bar.

I think most of the iPad Airs and Air 2s have a bit of yellowing on the left side and cooler, bluer tone on the right side. I am pretty sure it has something to do with Apple using only 1 LED bar on the right in portrait mode and then using a diffuser to spread the light across the rest of the screen.

I've seen this yellowness on the left on all the new Air 2s at Best Buy and at the Apple Store. It ranges from very mild to down right obvious...at least to my super sensitive eyes. My iPad 3, with 2 LED light bars, also had this issue surprisingly. I got used to it overtime and my brain just didn't perceive it anymore.

Nonsense. That screen is not acceptable on a 500+ dollar/euro device. I would change it. Really sad that we're still having this screenlottery with every model introduced. Really fed up with it. Here's hoping Apple switches to oled screens so this issue becomes a thing of the past.

So bottomline is, do I exchange this and hope to get a better screen or do I simply return it and continue using my iPad 4, tab reloads and all?

No Need ! That Looks Ok to me. The screen will more Burn in (Even Out More with Use) as and when you use it more.

Now you talk sense !!

unless the screen is drastically evident of showing some arbit colours, the kind of screen that the OP has it is a inherent feature/quality of the IPS Display Screens that Apple chooses to use. One must understand, that is how these screens are ? That is their quality, feature. No matter one changes hundred screens it is not going to be like impeccable.

It May/Can change if apple shifts from IPS display screens to OLED.

because it is Apple, it is acceptable to have bad and differend quality? buy a ticket and see how much luck you have?

if it was any other manufacturer, i bet, they would have been nailed... example, looks how much oneplus ones yellowish screen has got negative feedback even when people dont even has it. how about samsung? that would be like in heaven to bash it. but when it is iphone or ipad, it is ok and acceptable, because it is apple? because lcd, because, because...?

sorry, but all those pics looks awful and i bet they look even worse irl than a pic. and no, it is not acceptable - not even from apple. the price tag indicates a premium, high quality product, not a crappy product from the first lcd screen years ago... low quality, high price - nothing premium. yes it will sell, they always sell - apples marketing department has earned the xmas bonus on this year too... but it is all just hype...

saying that it's all fine it is like pissing in your own eye and trying to justify the money you just spent.

will i buy air2? not now, im going to wait couple months if they tweak it secrectly (again)... if not, im going to skip this one... there is no apple stores here, so i cannot just go, buy and return. only retailers, and they dont accept returns, so i should always use a warranty, send it to apple, wait their response and so on.. if i cannot go to a store, buy the device without fearing it may have a bad screen, i skip it. where is the premium? only in the price tag...

mine is uniform but definitely on the yellow/warm & oversaturated side - but i forget about it when there's no "real white" reference around and i won't do any color-critical work on it anyway - so i'll keep it. (also, no apple stores in my country - don't want to play the "send to apple game", if not really necessary.)

but still, my trusty old ipad 1 had better color reproduction (but uneven backlighting)
