I find it strange that people hate having 2 ways to accessing spotlight. But wants 2 ways of scrolling.

Some of you guys are finding it hard to comprehend the concept of 'personal choice' as we all like the option to do things differently than the next man. That's life, no explanations needed, no reasoning behind it, it happens. Accept it. don't even question it! :)

I doubt Apple include/exclude things by accident, intended or not, but they've given the people another choice. Advertised or not. They've opened the door...and closed it again.

Lets hope it re-opens now or sometime in the near future :)

Not for everyone. I have the iPP, but no Pencil -- I don't draw, and I don't take handwritten notes. I like the iPP because of its larger screen. Even among people who use the Pencil, I would think drawing and writing would be the major features, and scrolling with it is just a little extra thing that was useful, but not the main reason why someone would buy a Pencil.
It is one of the major reasons I bought a pencil for my IPP.

If I were Apple one good reason I wouldn't let users navigate with the pencil is that when you use the pencil iPad has to scan for input more frequently and may affect battery life.

Obviously when Apple tested the IPP and Pencil someone would have scrolled and figured out what the Pencil could do. Why change it now? It would have been much easier to eliminate the option before the public release of both devices.

there isnt a problem. it's just so many people would like the option of using the Pencil instead. personal preference of course. pure and simple.

Actually, I'd say it's more than personal preference.

Apple seems to think that people only use the pencil in specific drawing programs, so they stop doing everything else in order to draw.

I mainly use the pencil to mark up PDFs in PDF Expert. I'm a college professor so I read and grade student papers, as well as reading and taking notes on journal articles. The iPad PRO is big, so I am usually holding it in one hand, while marking up papers with the other. But I also need to navigate the app and the OS with the same free hand that is holding the pencil – so what's wrong with using my hand is that I don't have a hand free because it's holding the pencil.

Being able to use the pencil to select files, to switch from one file to another, to move and copy files, etc. etc. makes me much more productive than having to put the pencil down to do that.

It's also true that I often use the pencil to launch apps and do other things that I could do with my finger, and in those cases it's both preference and VERY convenient. But there are times when taking away the ability to use the pencil the way it works now would seriously degrade the user experience on the iPad PRO.

I don't know how exactly you're holding the Pencil, but I'm holding it with 3 fingers, not with my whole hand, and I always use my middle finger to operate the touchscreen while holding the Pencil. It's really easy.

Don't have a pencil right now to try this out, but it does seem like it should be simple to shift the grip to free a finger.

lol, it's pointless trying to teach an experienced grown adult how to hold a pencil in your way. it just isnt an option. why should he? ;)

imo fronesses makes a totally valid statement. i too hold the Pro in one hand and use my other hand to do everything else with the pencil. i too wish this not to stop.
yes, if it does then we might need to find other methods of input, but why should we? the method at present, for some people, is so much easier and more convenient than adjusting your natural pencil holding style.

no offense chaps, but i too would feel most patronized by a fellow person advising me how to hold a pencil in one hand when i'm more than intelligent enough not to be told how to when i can work it out for myself ;)
the point is, at this time i dont need to change. all boils down to my earlier point of personal choice. if i do need to adjust in the future then i will. but i certainly dont need lessons and tips on how to :p

I don't have a Pencil right now to check this, but I thought the only thing disabled in 9.3 beta is scrolling with the Pencil, and you can still select things and launch apps. Can someone confirm?

I will absolutely NOT upgrade to 9.3 if they continue to remove scrolling ability. I literally don't use my iPad for content consumption without my Pencil anymore. It's an extension of my hand and makes every action SOO much easier. Being able to slightly adjust the user interface without directly moving my fingers around is truly a treat. I NEVER flame or get mad at Apple because I simply don't care enough like most of the people on this forum -- but this change directly affects one of the best advances in iPad for me in years. PLEASE Apple, don't remove this.

All Apple really needs to do is add an option in Settings to turn the feature on or off. It seems like an absurdly easy solution to me.

Heh... may be a dangerous precedence where they'll then say the Apple Pencil wasn't meant for drawing :D

At the very least, give users the option to turn this on or off. Otherwise, it may feel like they were leading buyers on.

If you bought a device and it shipped with 9.3 you could revert back only if 9.2.1 was still being signed at the time. (Which is usually only for 2-3 weeks after a new release)

Uhhh... try typically 48 hours at most. I know - I monitor that like a hawk so I can revert back if I don't like the new iOS version. They just allow downgrading long enough to see if there's a truly mass problem like 50% of iPhone just bricked... Can you imagine what would happen if people could downgrade just because they didn't like Apple's design decisions for the new version of iOS? Talk about feedback. ;)

Apple just about always continues to sign the previous update for about 2 weeks. I've never seen then stop signing 48 hours after a new update.

I had not been a person who routinely used the Pencil for navigation on the IPP even though I have one. I thought of it more as a tool for specific tasks. But tonight I did decide to give it a shot to see what it was about. Definitely saw some benefits to using it for navigation and other tasks. I have pretty big and clumsy fingers and the precision I get using the Pencil is definitely a plus.

I do hope they find a way to make it continue to work in 9.3 and beyond.
