That's the issue I'm seeing as well. Unfortunately, HDMI on the mini will output at no more than 30 hz. So I've simply adjusted the brightness and contrast on the monitor itself to compensate. That surprised me, because in my experience DP was always superior in image quality to HDMI.

Not sure what resolution you are running, but my base mini runs my 3440x1440 ultrawide at 100Hz
HDMI.

Tried restarting the keyboard and cycling through connected devices to no avail. Restarted the MM and it connected just fine afterward. Haven't had issue again (yet), but it made me realize that Apple doesn't have an on-screen keyboard option like Windows machines do. This is an absolutely ridiculous omission

There‘s an option to add an on-screen keyboard to the login screen in the Accessibility settings.

My monitor runs at 4K. I can always get that resolution through HDMI. But that way the frequency is limited to 30 hz, even though my monitor is supposedly capable of 60 hz through HDMI.

UPDATE: I figured it out. My LG monitor has a buried setting called "Ultra HD Deep Color". I turned that on and voila! -- 4k 60 hz over HDMI. It looks really good, better than DP.

My maxed-out mini arrived yesterday. I set it up as new from scratch. I have a big video project coming up this weekend, so I'll be able to tell then how Final Cut behaves. I also have a couple of Logic projects to do next week.

Waiting your test and review about working on FCP with it :)

I did do a mini mini report on the previous page. In a nutshell, it works fine so far with HD clips. Color-correcting a 25 second clip took 6 seconds to render. I dumped a half-hour's worth of clips into the workspace, balanced the color, made audio adjustments, used the fisheye correction on most of the clips. The entire set completed rendering in under three minutes. I'm happy with that. Next week I'll be testing out 4k.

Are you still using a wired keyboard, or are you using wireless now?
Base M1 Mini - 3 weeks and loving it!

No wireless - hardwired LAN port to router for 500Mbps ISP.

Bluetooth Apple Magic Keyboard 2 w/ Logitech mouse.

Dual displays - main: 27" Apple Thunderbolt w/ TB3-TB2 adapter; extended: 32" Samsung 4K direct via HDMI port.

There‘s an option to add an on-screen keyboard to the login screen in the Accessibility settings.

Thought that was only available AFTER you logged in. I changed the accessibility settings and if I try logging in as a guest user, the keyboard now pops up. Thank you for the tip

Another blackout for 3-4 seconds after switching from desktop, to desktop 2 and then back to desktop 1. This is a USB-C Dell Monitor. I am running a second Dell monitor via HDMI. That one hasn't blacked out yet.

I continue to have over 20-30 bluetooth dropouts per day with a Mac Mini 8/256. Random disconnects and reconnects. Apple engineering and Apple Care have been in contact and I have sent several syndiagnose files. I am hoping there is a software solution because the Mini is otherwise extremely good. The problem is not overstated. Look up Apple Support Communities: Bluetooth -4th Gen 2020 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse 2.

Many continue to have this problem with multiple bluetooth devices: Apple watches, headphones, keyboards, mice, speakers. I am hoping the update to Mac OS today resolves the problem. Still at work so I am not able to test. But the update does mention fixing Apple Watch bluetooth connections with the Mac.

M1 Mini is good little machine. I received it today and used the migration tool to transfer from my '18 Mini. Not sure everything is updated yet, to universal apps.

I'm surprised that browsing the web seems to bring up the pages quicker. I can't wait to run it through its paces, in the next few weeks.

The Bluetooth disconnection issue still lives. It is really disappointing that Apple hasn't fixed the faulty component/software bug a long time ago, honestly but there are workarounds. I have the monitor hooked up via Thunderbolt to DP. I haven't tried HDMI to HDMI yet.

It is so cold to the touch. It is amazing and very quiet.

Mine is working great so far, no problems. Apple Watch unlock works and no bluetooth issues whatsoever so far. I updated to the most recent version of Big Sur.

For the first week I’d have said that mine was working fine, but not now. It’s looking like mine will need to go back for repairs or replacement.

Having a few issues, all relating to the Mini waking from sleep:

  • Firstly I started to get a snowy screen on waking
  • Then the screen wouldn’t wake at all - only way to get the display working is to switch the power off and on again
  • As of yesterday I’m now also getting Bluetooth drop-outs on wake up, with either the Magic Trackpad or keyboard (or both) not connecting. Luckily I’ve got wired mice and keyboards otherwise I’d have no way of logging on
I’m connected to a Samsung monitor via HDMI. It doesn’t have any other ports that would connect to the Mini.

After a few chats with Apple Support I’ve tried the following, without any luck:

  • Swapping the HDMI cable
  • Booting into safe mode
The display issue only seems to occur when the Mini has been asleep for an extended period of time, say overnight. I work from home (2020!) so it will regularly go to sleep during the day when I‘m away from my desk, and it‘s always fine. But every morning the display won’t work.

I’m getting irritated now. The only thing I wonder if I did wrong was not setting it up as a new machine, and instead used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my 2011 MBP...

I would hope that's not the case, since Migration Assistant is supposed to be a help and not a hindrance. That said, I set my mini up as a new machine and reinstalled everything from scratch, just to make sure nothing got corrupted. Outside of the bizarre screen saver issue (that so far has only happened once), it's been working fine. HDMI looks great on my LG monitor at 4k 60hz.

Been speaking to Apple again, and having failed to resolve the issues with a new HDMI cable and booting to safe mode, today I did a "SCM reset" after my keyboard just flat-out refused to connect.

Not sure how many other fixes I'll be asked to try - guess I'll find out tomorrow morning when I try to wake the Mac up again

It's probably silly to post this less than 24 hours in to using the new mini, but here's the deal so far. It's working just fine. It's replacing the 2014 rMPB on the desktop.

I'm glad I had an old wired keyboard and mouse; almost forgot about that until I started the setup. The mini once set up, paired well with my existing Apple BT keyboard, mouse, and trackpad. It dropped the connection with the mouse a couple of times but picked it up again quickly. I've had a Bose mini-soundlink BT speaker for a few years; it's always been cranky about connecting to my rMPB. Rather than fuss with that, I placed it near the mini and used the headphone jack to link it by cable; works fine.

I encountered an issue this morning that may be more related to Big Sur than the mini itself. I have a new 6TB Fantom external HD to use for Time Machine. This will replace the old 5TB Fantom that was the TM for my rMPB (yes the internal SSDs are only 512G but I have another 5TB external drive with at least 3TB of photo and other files on it). When I connected the new drive to the mini I got the expected message that it wasn't recognized/mounted or whatever. I clicked the "initialize" option which brought up Disk Utility, showing the new drive. But I couldn't get Disk Utility to *do* anything to the drive. I tried it all twice. So I connected the new drive to the old rMPB which is still running Catalina. When I followed the "initialize" option there, Disk Utility was responsive, and quickly "erased" the drive with the correct formatting.

The real test of this new mini for me, will be photo editing in Lightroom, Photoshop, and a few other apps. I won't be able to try that until probably tomorrow night. I don't do crazy heavy duty professional stuff, like stacking 40 image files 🤣 - so I'll be happy if it's as good as the old rMBP.

I've had it hooked up up HDMI to HDMI and I'm not having any issues, so far, with it waking up.

Update to my bluetooth/keyboard issue. Even when adding the on-screen keyboard to the login screen, once logged in I was still unable to connect to my keyboard. Didn't matter how many times I tried it simply wouldn't connect. After a restart it connected just fine.

I ended up using the USB dongle for the keyboard (MX Keys) and have not had any issues since (at least not yet). Downside is I now only have one available port left, but seeing as I primarily use a hub to connect external devices, this shouldn't have too big of an impact.

Any reason I not to use HDMI over USB-C for a monitor? Maybe I'll buy a new cable to free up an extra port. I'm not using a huge 8k monitor or anything like that
