I have a White Early 2008 MacBook, always wanted the black though. I always stay on the lookout for a good deal. However, I still use my white one everyday, and never had a problem with it.

Still rocking' the BlackBook that i bought early 2007.

Over the years both the SuperDrive & Bluetooth controller failed. I got the top case replaced under warrantee (cracks), had to replace the HDD a couple of times (capacity), and maxed out the RAM. Otherwise she's been a pretty solid little machine.

About a year ago the battery stopped charging; traced the issue to either the Magsafe controller or logic board… but it still worked like a champ as long as it was plugged in.

Last weekend I noticed a BlackBook on Kijiji listed for $200 with description "Cracked and falling apart. Runs really hot and shuts down randomly. Good only for parts." Thought it might be worth a shot - if nothing else, just to get the magsafe controller and get mine up-and-running as a laptop again.

Went back-and-forth with the guy and finally settled on $80 without the power adapter or HDD. Apparently his original price was negotiable. :D

Spent the better part of an afternoon scavenging parts - the case of the Kijiji MacBook was pretty thrashed, and the innards were full of lint / gunge - clearly hadn't been taken care of over the years.

Tried swapping the Magsafe Controller, no dice.

Thought the logic boards looked pretty similar so took a shot and swapped the Logic Board, SuperDrive, Bluetooth Card, AirPort Card into my 'old' MacBook - and they all work great!

Plus, the battery that came with it had only 162 cycles on it so I swapped that as well.

Works great - albeit a bit of a frankenstein internally. Shows as a mid-2007 in "System Information". Apparently the logic board just needed a good cleaning and reapply of thermal paste.

So… $80 and a few hours have restored my little BlackBook to almost new status. It's not a race-horse, but it sure is a work-horse.

Not much of a computer person but I stumbled upon this thread when researching about my MacBook.

I switched back to my late 2007 Black MacBook after two of my 2011 15 in. MacBook Pros crashed. The first one had a main logic board failure and Google told me that it's common in the 2011 models. I was told to mail it in to Apple to repair, cost me roughly $500. I hadn't backed up my data in a while so it cost me another $70 to back up. (Lesson learned, always back up data!!) Switched to a backup MacBook Pro and after using it for about a week, it crashed and flashes a folder with a question mark when starting up. I'm bringing it in to my local Apple Store soon to see if it can be fixed. Hopefully the hard drive hasn't completely been lost.

I had to dig up the 2007 model since there were no computers left. Surprised that everything still runs fine. I'm curious though, I checked on the battery cycle and it only has 33 cycles so far. Anyone know what this means? It was stored away and forgotten about for a while before it was finally rediscovered about 3 years ago. Since then, it's rarely been used and serves mainly as a computer for the kids to play on. Thanks.

I still have mine although now I'm using a Surface Pro 3 as my laptop.

The battery swelled up a few years ago and never bought a new one so it's always been used as a desktop. Works fine without a battery.

I'll keep it although I really have no use for it now. I always liked the black MacBooks.

Anyone tried to put a white macbook5,2 logicboard in a black macbook chassis? I was wondering if it's doable for having a black macbook that runs El capitan. Or are there known obstacles to this, like screen connectors not compatible (unless you can switch the plastics around the screen as well).

I just found myself a very good deal locally, an unused and brand new MacBook Black 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. Long story short, this guy bought 2 MacBooks (white and black) at local Apple Store and forgot to even use the black one. He used white more often. Today, he is in need of cash and the black MacBook was the only thing thats left on his closet. Put this beauty up on Craiglist for a steal. I found it, and paid him cash directly.

The unit is very clean since it is unused and I am amazed on how cool the black MacBook is. I installed my spare Intel 320 SSD 160 GB that I used for my unibody MacBook a while back and this thing screams!!. I'm now in the market for 4 GB memory upgrade:D

Just curious, how many of you guys still actually use the MacBook as their second or main computer? Is it a good Lion machine? Tell the stories.....

Pictures coming in a minute...:)
Me 2 M8
How's it running now ??

I have a black Macbook1,1 that was my "around the house" computer until lately when the screen started messing up. If I apply pressure on the screen it's fine, when I stop pushing on the screen I get lines, a greyish colored screen and the cursor locks up... to me it sounds like it needs a new screen.

These units still work ok, the main thing wrong with them, to me, is that the sound level is low. This was the case with all the iBooks too.

I picked one up last summer; a late 2006 2.0ghz c2d model; with a dead keyboard, for $50. I picked up another top case off eBay for $30 and dropped 2.5 gigs and a 500gb hard drive in it. After experimenting with Debian Jessie, I installed Mountain Lion via MacPostFactor and themed the OS with Flavours. Running Waterfox, I'm able to keep an up-to-date browser and use it as my daily mobile driver.

I've also got a white Macbook, late 2008 2.4ghz c2d model, that I picked up sans memory and hard drive for $25 from the local recycler. Added the missing parts, took a magic eraser to it, and voila... working Macbook!

are you selling yours?

I'm so jealous .. I looooved the black macbook .. I went into the store to buy one but since they didn't have the black one in stock, I ended up getting the white glossy one ..

Bought mine in 2006. Changed the screen twice, upgraded to an SSD, maxed the RAM, changed the battery three times.
It has been with me in the jungles of Malaysia, the Sinai desert, on a year long dive boat trip all up the coast of Thailand, Burma and the Andaman islands and is an early thing I pick up when I go travelling in Europe and it still rocks!!

It looks like **** on the outside, but then so would you if you had to live with my travelling.

Feel guilty putting it in a box to not use, but then the company just gave me a 64GB i7 laptop with a 1TB SSD, and they are currently sitting side-by-side on my desk.

They will have to prise it out of my dead, cold hands, to take it away from me.

Never had the black, but I got the white with the same specs as the last black one (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo 2008) about 4 years ago. I just retired it because even just surfing was becoming a big problem on it, as it only runs 10.7.5.

I replaced it last month with a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo 2008 aluminum Unibody one with GeForce 9400M. Despite the slower CPU, it runs much better in the real world because of the support for much more up-to-date OS and software (including a noticeably faster Safari) and because of the hardware h.264 decode support. Netflix HD and YouTube HD work beautifully on this machine without the fan going into vacuum cleaner mode.

I'm using one right now. It started out as a MacBook 4,1 with the 2.4 c2d.
It is now a MacBook 5,2 with the 2.13ghz c2d and geforce 9400m. Its running High Sierra. I put a 500GB SSHD hybrid drive in it, I use it as my main laptop because I like the size and its actually very responsive.

i started to buy one around the middle of last year but i backed out. still might get one someday. i would use it to rip dvd's and it would permanently stay on the top shelf of my tv cabinet. everything on that cabinet is black. don't really need it, i have a white macbook i use for ripping. around every other month i hook a firewire drive up to it to transfer the movies. then i delete them from the macbook. the firewire drive stays hooked up to a 1.25ghz g4 imac which is where i watch the movies.
