I'm more than happy with my black iPhone. To be honest I do not understand people who went with white one just because of some scuff fobia. When you screw up your white iPhone it won't look pretty as well. I know, I know, you might say "but on a white one scuffs won't be as visible as on the black one". So my answer is...

don't forget to paint your nails :D

Hate to admit it, because I tried a white 4S, but you are 1000% right. Not only did the screen border bug me, but it definitely is less "aggressive" (best word I can think of) and more "girly".

The sales numbers bear that out (more women buy white, by a huge margin).

It's hilarious so many people are willing to buy a phone color they made fun of weeks earlier just because it may show wear a little better...

Their prerogative, but I'll be using and enjoying the best looking phone 2 weeks from now (when wear will be "expected" lol).

You don't get it. Yes, of course I expect the thing to start peeling/chipping away in due time. No product is absolutely flawless. However, for such a premium product it shouldn't start to wear away in a matter of a few hours with normal use. With good handling, it should at least last a few weeks or months or so before even showing such signs (in my opinion). And a case just adds more thickness to the thin design. Why should I have to pay more money to prevent something that normally shouldn't happen so early with the use of a product. Apple should at least offer some kind of free casing then imo.

Agreed that a premium product, such as the iPhone, shouldn't begin to demonstrate noticeable wear immediately. However, I find it extremely hard to believe that the black will begin to chip, fade, peel in a few hours...

Enjoy your scuffed iPhone.

Awesome post!!!

Face it guys, no one uses cases anymore, resale is all that matters, and even though everyone expects it to wear "down the road" no one should live with a tiny nick today. The phone might explode ffs.

*facepalm*

No one uses cases anymore? Are you nuts? Is that why every store has a huge aisle of them? Some of the logic here cracks me up....

I like the look of the Black one, but my OCD would drive me insane if it started getting scuffmarks. So white is right!

My plan was always to put a case on mine and I like the way the screen looks against black so I'd be pretty hard pressed to go with white.

Having said that, I understand that people would be disappointed that the black starts to chip/wear away within the first few days. I do think that is an issue but it wouldn't drive me away from black.

as a hardcore iphone lover, and a guy coming from a white 4s (i swap colors with every iphone) im pretty sad that there is a freaking Scuff factor.

Welp, wrapsol here i come

I'm and the phone is flawless. Its so light and feels awesome in the hand, actually I feel like getting a case for this phone to add some weight. You can feel the difference between the 4 and 5 that it feels odd

is it as slick as the iPhone 4/4S or does the new back give some grip? i dropped my iP4 the one day i took it out of a case because i wasnt used to it being so slim...then again it could of been the alcohol that night?

I just received the black iPhone 5 for myself this morning - my colleague got the White, which he got for the iPhone 4s as well. He loved his white 4s, but then saw his white 5 next to the black 5, and just said "Damn. Should've gone with the black this time." Side by side, the black just has an amazing look to it - almost blue hint to the aluminum. I personally love it, to say nothing of the scratching and scuffing issue people are experiencing.

My first impression: This is a very nice looking phone. You have to see it and hold it to believe everything you read.

I don't see any scufs/nicks out of the box. Lots of dust particles that have the illusion of being an issue. I'm actually glad they did do the finish on the border... makes it look extremely sleek.

Uh yes it is. Powder coating whatever you want to calli it. To get metal black, it's got to be coated.

oh boy... you're best to just leave this one alone... trust me. you'll get a lecture on anodizing versus powercoating versus painting, etc.

Black 64gb arrived an hour ago. Beautiful out of the box! So much lighter and it's sleek. Happy with my purchase :D

I went white the last time but the gasket around the screen started to get grubby.

I'm perfectly happy with mine!! It's so light and thin!!! Love it!! My 4s already feels like a brick compared to this thing. :apple:

I'm a little miffed about this whole scuff thing...it's a black eye for a company who prides itself on the highest quality products. That said, I am likely not to worry too much about it, as I'll have it in a bumper for 99% of its life (I found that without something, it slides on tables too easily, and I like setting the phone on its screen (so my cat doesn't walk on it), and so I want a small lip to elevate the screen off the table.)

I have had a bumper/case on all my iPhones, and while I like the look of the bare phone, I know I pretty much will only have it bare for a few days (my bumper comes Tuesday, unfortunately).

Still...if it wears really poorly, really quickly, I will likey go for an exchange. If there's a little wear on the edges, I won't worry about it. I think if just the chamfer wears, it could look really nice after a little while, but there are now reports of the non-chamfered hard edge wearing as well, and that's just unfortunate and disappointing.

Still, it's a phone...not a Rolex.

Right now, my black 32GB is on the FedEx truck for delivery, so we'll see how it turns out.

Mine is perfect! I even tried to scuff it with my fingernail in an inconspicuous area and it was still perfect. No marks, scuffs, scratches, etc. I'm hoping it stays that way and I'll use it for a week to make sure it does, but the black is beautiful and very happy with it!

I got black and I thought I was happy with it until this woman was standing behind me in the line for us to switch out our upgrades and I saw her white one and I thought it was beautiful. The bevel edge looked like diamonds to me. I immediately wanted a white one instead but I think I got the one in my hands now by the skin of my teeth as I just canceled my online order with Apple this morning and there was some talk among the Apple store employees about customers who ordered online (like me) had blown their upgrades.

Trust me, the black/slate is beautiful. Mine came out of the box pristine - not a single imperfection of any sort on the back or sides. My 5 will go naked - no case nor screen protector, and it will wear as it may. Since my 3GS I've been in the habit of keeping my iPhone in one pocket by itself, and 4S looks nearly flawless a year later.

If the anodized coating chips, wears or what have you I call it adding character. I plan to keep this phone for two years (now on the "tick" cycle instead of the "tock") so however it looks in two years, IIWII. It's mine, I'm happy with the choice and I hope everyone else is with theirs.
