Since AT&T has upgraded the towers around me from EDGE to 3G, my phone is rendered useless in terms of calling or texting at least two nights a week for me. On those average two nights, my phone will show 5 bars of signal then drop immediately to zero bars. Outbound calls won't ever connect, and the majority of text messages just hang in the balance. When it's one of the other five days of the week, texting is fine but voice calling is still a hassle. Longest phone call I've had is ten minutes. It usually drops the call within five minutes, typically.

Yes, I know I can switch EDGE only on my phone and not have to deal with it (and I do when I make a call) but that's not the point. My bill every month goes to that 3G network working, and it doesn't. I know that not everybody has the same problem as me, but a lot of people do. Maybe one day AT&T will get their network working right and actually live up to their reputation as the fastest network (cause they're not). Until then, my iPhone is up for sale :( and I'll just have to move on to something different.

that is the exact same problem I have. I tried getting more info on the microcell but they played dumb with me and wouldn't even connect me with someone who had knowledge. This is what's currently pushing me over the edge. I love my iPhone but AT&T is a total thorn in my side. Never with any other carrier have I ever felt so strongly that I wasn't getting my moneys worth.

FYI to AT&T customers your not paying for 3G your paying for a data plan whether your on GPRS or HSPA+. Just like I pay for cable Internet my provider doesn't care if I'm on wifi or direct Ethernet connection. It's not justification for a ****** network that has capacity issues but I'm just throwing tha out there.

Why drop the iPhone? I guess it all depends on which country & operator you are stuck with. Well here in Switzerland using Swisscom, I must say I enjoy my iPhone very much & would not think of exchanging it for another phone. I will admit that I would not mind Swisscom dropping their service rates a wee bit. :D

I will not be dropping the iphone anytime soon. Honestly, I can't even imagine having another phone because this one does everything I need it to do and does it well. AS for AT&T, no complaints. I rarely have dropped calls and voice and speed quality is pretty good, at least here in Chicago.

I've been very frustrated with AT&T lately. I recently moved into an area that shows "moderate" coverage and I'm lucky to get 1-2 bars of service outside my house. When in the house it's no service or one bar. I drop calls and get "called failed" constantly. I'm honestly torn with what to do. I do not want any other phone but really do need a phone that I can use in my house.

Already dropped my iPhone. I still think it is the best smartphone out there all-round - it isn't the best at everything, but its all-round strengths are better than any comparable device. After all, the comparison is always made 'is device x as good/better than the iPhone?' but the O2 and Orange plans are awful value for money. Bought myself a Blackberry 9700 today and quite frankly, for the £35 p/m I pay, it's much better value for money than the iPhone. 1200 mins/unltd texts/unltd data/BB push email/tethering for £35 vs 600 mins/500 texts/unltd data/no tethering for £35 is an easy decision to make.

Maybe when Apple quit shafting service providers and give them some room for manoeuvre on prices, iPhone will once again become a viable choice for me (and presumably many others who are driven by value for money, rather than shiny).

Also if you had millions of people hammering your 3G network every second you'd have a sucky network too

If you had millions of people paying you $30/month FOR that Network - it would be reasonable for your customers to expect that $30 to be invested in improving the 3G network so as to provide a reasonable level of service.

I see people making this argument so often - it's not as if people are hammering the 3G network for free - they ARE paying to use it - they deserve a certain level of service.

No, I am paying for 3G service. I live in a 3G area, so I'm paying for it.

Your cable internet comparison made ZERO sense. Not even close to an apples to apples comparison.

Just come back to iPhone

I've just returned to iPhone.

In May this year I decided to not get the 3GS, but to pass my 3G to the wife and get a HTC Magic on vodafone UK.

Now the Magic was good, and Android is actually a nice platform and I thought I was happy...

but my Dad just got a new Touch, and setting it up i do like the interface, so I dug out my original iPhone, unlocked it with blackrain / bootneuter and now using it with my Voda contract from the magic :)

Managed to enable MMS, and I literally never use video on my phone as have a flip.

I'll miss the compass and GPS from the magic, so need to pursuade the wife to swap my 3G back, but for now am very happy - theres a level of 'polish' to the iPhone you just dont seem to get elsewhere :)

O2 contract up in Jan, now was considering the pre, but now gonna wait till the inevitable new iPhone in July '10.

Why I have a BlackBerry

I love everything Apple and would LOVE to have an iPhone. Unfortunately, AT&T has screwed me about 20 times too many - whenever I can choose something other than AT&T, regardless of the cost, I make that choice. I would rather hit myself in the head with a sharp stone and rub salt and lemon juice in the wound than have free service with AT&T. I would rather go without a mobile phone than have AT&T.
If that isn't clear enough, I can try again with expletives.

I have defended AT&T for as long as I have had my iPhone but it's coming to a point where I can't use my 3G when there is a cloud in the sky. Do I NEED the 3G? No, but when I am paying for it I expect to be able to use it at least 70% of the time and quite honestly, I think I'm being generous with that. I am supposed to have 'great' coverage in St. Louis, MO but it is, all in all, rather poor.

I hate to complain about it because I really enjoy the phone and I use it for most of the features but when it struggles to be what it's said to be then it's disappointing.

The number of dropped calls I've gotten with AT&T in the last year is about the same number I'd get in ONE DAY with Verizon.

If Verizon was the last cell company on earth, I'd buy a walke-talke.

No i will not drop the iPhone anytime soon. It works well for me and I have gone through 3 since the original launch day.

I had already been an at&t customer before the iPhone was released and the service was/is always good here in the Los Angeles area (for me).

However, if at&t's service was poor and did not meet my standards I would not stay with them and keep the iphone, regardless of it's features. I can only imagine the frustration some users here have with the iphone and spotty service.

I am not ready to drop the iPhone, but I am ready to drop AT$T. I live in Fountain Colorado which is basically an outskirt area of Colorado Springs and I am in both cities every day. Supposedly we have great coverage here... its ok, but I wouldnt call it great. I think I am on the GPRS network just as much as I am on the 3G or Edge network. I drop tons of calls. I just recently switched out my sim card and that helped a tiny bit, but I still drop calls maybe like 5% less than before. Everytime I drop the call I look down on my phone its full bars... WTF? Verizon kills AT$T in this area (and everywhere else I've used it; Anywhere in CO, Las Vegas, Bay Area, and places in between).

There are trade offs though such as I was with Verizon for like 8 years and not once did they ever have a phone that wasn't obsolete and/or boring within like 3 months. Verizon does it on purpose, I believe, to make that extra buck. I finally switched and have been happy with my iPhone since (not the cell service). The time and dedication that Apple puts into the thing says it all. Yes they release a new phone every year, but the old phone always gets the bulk of the updates along with the new phone (software wise; except MMS obv on the 2G). No Verizon phone does this. They release them as the new best thing, and 6 months later they're on sale and the "newer bestest" thing is released.

So if you want good phone service go to VZW, but if you want the best phone iPhone all day.

(Yes I will be switching back to VZW if the iPhone ever goes there.)

I dropped AT&T, not the iPhone. The iPhone on T-Mobile is brilliant, even without the 3G support I feel much happier. Cheaper plans, better coverage (where I am), can still use all the iPhone's amenities fine (except 3G as said, and visual voicemail).

I had a dream last night that I dropped my iPhone and dented the case (yes, in my dream plastic could dent). That's what I get for reading forums before bed.

I'm in the process as we speak. iPhone is up on eBay, and as soon as the money is transferred into my bank account, I'm heading to AT&T to buy a Bold 9700.

The iPhone hasn't changed in the nearly 3 years I've had one. Same boring look, no ability to change it, Apple's Orwellian policies, etc. The new Bold is one of the nicest looking phones I've ever seen, and I love the new trackpad.

I don't hate the iPhone, it's just getting a little boring. Even though I had an original and then bought a 3G S, it's pretty much like having the same phone for three years.

So you're buying a Blackberry because the iPhone hasn't changed in three years? RIM products have had a similar form factor for much longer. :p But not going to deny the Bold is a sexy looking device.

I meant the OS itself. Although RIM hasn't changed much either, I haven't had one so I don't notice it haha. I love the look of the new 5.0 icons and such. The iPhone OS is stale to me.

No im not ready to drop the iphone, im waiting to get rid of my 3g for the next iphone.

Although, the alleged google phone could be tempting...

Sure, drop the iPhone on the sidewalk and glue it good. =p

I carry an iPhone, Blackberry, and Droid device (mobile support for my company). No device is even close to the iPhone. I can barely even look at my blackberry anymore after being spoiled by the iPhone, and Android is so immature as a platform right now. Plus, I hate typing on the droid.

The iPhone is bar far the best mobile phone/pocket computer available right now.

J.D. Powers, known for impartial analysis of the car industry, concurs.

Im dropping the iphone in January when I upgrade. Going for the Blackberry 9000 or Palm Pre.

Totally fed up with the iphone and the lack of basic things still not included with it.

Still like the way it performs and applications etc, but as a device its falling behind and Apple aren't doing very much to keep me interested.
