Man, I just purchased a 3GS and am thinking it may have been a mistake after reading this thread.

I tried AT&T service a few years back when it was Cingular. I had come from Verizon and the only reason I made the change was because they were the only ones with the BB8300 at the time and I needed it for work. It was such a nightmare with constant dropped calls or worse "can you hear me nows". I ended eating the contract after 6 months and went with the dreaded smartphone. It was pretty sad as a PDA but atleast I didn't have any issues with my calls.

I can honestly say I've had 0 dropped or static ridden calls on the 15 years with Verizon. I was hopeful of the rumors that the iPhone was possibly coming in 2010, but that was stifled pretty quickly. That, coupled with the fact that my iTouch was stolen and some saying that AT&T's network has improved, pushed me torwards giving another shot.

I do still have my Chocolate with Verizon activated, so I'll see how things pan out. Either way, I'd keep the iPhone for its features, and would just use the Verizon to, well, answer any calls I can't with the iPhone. :p

My issues are very small and as a whole the iphone is good; however, the things that I have issue with are:

your own SMS, Calendar, email alerts
Home Screen type set up, you know, being able to see your appointments etc for that day.
Week to view in calendar

I know they're small but they irritate me and there are many great phones out there that do all this and more.

Should be able to recycle it in Jan for about £250 - good times.

I have a lot problems with service even though AT&T says I'm only a couple miles from the nearest tower. I get dropped calls with 3 or 4 bars pretty frequently where I live. I'm tempted to play around with the Palm Pre, but it would be hard to give up all of the cool apps I have now for my phone.

As soon as Verizon releases the Android HTC Passion/Dragon, my 3Gs goes on Ebay, and I will say goodbye to AT&T. I love the iPhone, but AT&T's coverage is pretty dismal in my area.

so, for those of you switching to verizon, what phone you gonna get? I'm thinking about getting an omnia and using it with pagesplus prepaid o save money. then I can keep my iphone as an ipod touch

I'm usually pretty patient but AT&T has been horrible the past couple days. Missed texts, no missed calls but voicemails, dropped calls, etc, etc. Ugh.

Service here in Green Bay has been great and with 3G it has benn better. Sprint customer xervice sucked and my service experience with Verizon was not great. ATT has done alrightr by me. Not moving anytime for service reasons at all.

Edit
Some parts of town still have dead spots, though.

apparently they are doing work in the area. I have shut off 3G and everything is working beautifully on edge.

They were doing that here in Denver two weeks ago. No 3G for that whole Friday and Saturday. It would only work for a few minutes, than nothing again. Late that Saturday night it started working and it's been super fast ever since.

went from 3 bars to 1 bar in my house over the period of one month. unacceptable.

Sure many are happy BUT i've never heard so many subjective and objective complains about service from other providers.
Search the web, ATT should be in the wikipidia for bad cell reception.

I didn't have time to go through this entire thread but has anyone recommended to the OP to exchange his phone? My first iPhone was a POS and dropped calls ALL THE TIME so i paid the ETF and switched back to Verizon happily. I moved back to the iPhone when the 3GS came out and was very happy with the service/phone. My phone turned into the biggest POS about a month ago always dropping calls and failing to send text messages a lot. I exchanged it and Im back to excellent service so it was the phone which got me thinking my original phone was probably a dud also which would explain my two completely different experiences. Now I never drop calls or get failed messages rather I'm on 3G or EDGE. Also if your sim card is not seated properly it can cause poor service too.

Who is ready to drop the iPhone? - when 4G come out...

I have been carrying the Droid for the past 3 weeks to give it a try. It has some nice features, but overall its not ready for prime time. The iPhone is just so much more efficient to use - every button seems to do the right thing and its in the right place. I searched the entire time I had the Droid (which I just "dropped" back to Verizon) on how to move messages between imap folders and gave up. And there are many other functions that are just too hard to get to as compared to the iPhone.

Maybe Android v3...

AT&T Great

With years of experience dealing with all sorts of "service" companies - I am delighted with the customer service AT&T provides. Real people who know what they are talking about OR will get someone who does. Back in the days when one could actually call places like Microsoft, Dell, Cable company, etc. I used up my share of four letter words. I have had one dropped call in my 8 months of iPhone experience. The Apple rep (who was secured for me in less than 5 minutes was outstanding. Even gave me his personal email and called back next day to see if all was OK. It was an odd sort of problem, caused 90% by myself.

I'm in the process as we speak. iPhone is up on eBay, and as soon as the money is transferred into my bank account, I'm heading to AT&T to buy a Bold 9700.

The iPhone hasn't changed in the nearly 3 years I've had one. Same boring look, no ability to change it, Apple's Orwellian policies, etc. The new Bold is one of the nicest looking phones I've ever seen, and I love the new trackpad.

I don't hate the iPhone, it's just getting a little boring. Even though I had an original and then bought a 3G S, it's pretty much like having the same phone for three years.

Similar feelings here. I'm thinking that I'll get a BB 9700 next upgrade and the newest iPod Touch. The iPhone is really great, but I'm getting annoyed at the fact that you can't customize it at all compared to a BB.

Then again, I'm still contemplating waiting for the fourth generation iPhone.

This.

Except i got a Pre instead. I want to put the phone on ebay and have already even gotten offers from friends who want my phone. The thing holding me back is the prospect of iPhone 4, should i decide to get it, it will prove useful in minimizing cost due to resale value

Also the fact that O2 have unlocked my phone and given me pretty much the best iPhone tariff you can get! *Sigh*...decisions decisions

I am up in the northwest, and i rarely get in areas where their is not any 3G coverage, I had so many more dropped calls with Verizon actually, :p AT&T service has been great so far.

Not at all.

I get great 3G coverage throughout Chicago, faster speeds than my Sprint BlackBerry for work, and the app ecosystem isn't even close on any other devices.
