Ricky Gervais a random podcaster? obviously you have never heard of The Office (probably his most famous show).. the US have their own actors in that show, but Gervais was the brains.. very talented bloke.. funny too :p

See my edit. I first found out about him via his way-hyped podcast, to find out he was the writer for the British "The Office". I fixed my mistake....

Queen Elizabeth the first came to your school?

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England, Queen of France (in name only), and Queen of Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes referred to as The Virgin Queen, as she never married, Gloriana, or Good Queen Bess, and immortalised by Edmund Spenser as the Faerie Queene. Elizabeth I was the fifth and final monarch of the Tudor dynasty (Henry VII, Henry VIII, her half-brother Edward VI, and her half-sister Mary I). She reigned for 45 years, during a period marked by increases in English power and influence worldwide and great religious turmoil within England.

I have also met, and spoke with or helped pretty much every chef on the food network - emeril, alton brown, Bobby Flay, Paula Deen etc.

Also, I have seen/been close to but never actually spoke with or shook hands with: Michael Jordan, Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, Matt Lauer, Aretha Franklin.

That's cool. I enjoy watching food network, even though I can't cook to save my life.

Trent Reznor (another long story, he's far more calm and intelligent than he appears live)

I met Trent in Birmingham in 1990. He's a nice guy!

I don't know, some unknown Norwegian "Schauspieler"-wannabe...

:p

The guy's name is Horst Tappert. He's one of Germany's most famous TV actors, portraying Comm. Derrick in the police series of the same name for 25+ years. The series has been syndicated to 104 countries. Tappert owns a cottage on the Norwegian island of Hamarøy (spelling?). This might be why you met him.

Trivia: His assistant in the series, Insp. Harry Klein, is portrayed by Fritz Wepper, who played "Ernst Ludwig" in the movie version of "Cabaret".

I was answering the question: "Who's the guy on your right?" ;)

Nope... it was in Munich... I've never been to Hamarøy...

I've met a lot over the years - David Letterman, Andy Rooney (when I lived in Connecticut) Letterman was an ass. I was working at a grocery store at the time (high school) and he came in. The cashier was gushing and really excited, wanted an autograph and he blew her off.

When I was in DC all sorts, Clinton, Madeleine Albright (a couple times). The best was in the Leesburg Outlets, Pottery Barn Outlet. She was in line in front of us and we didn't recognize her at first. Imagine her in sweats and baseball cap :D She held up the line because the friend she was there with had to run and get something off a shelf. She paid by check, so the cashier had it out for bit to make sure it was really her after she left. Before that, it was at Ford's Theater.

I dated a woman who was the society reporter for the Washington Times, so I'd get to go to some of the social events. Richard Prior, Damon Wayans, Robin Williams, Whoopie were all at the Mark Twain awards at the Kennedy Center for Prior's award. I have pics, I'll have to dig them out (pre digital).

Ted Kennedy and a bunch of others at a fund raiser at the Shriver mansion in Potomac. Maria and Arnold went there, unfortunately - that would have been interesting.

I was eating at Nobu in New York and Cindy Lauper was sitting in the booth behind me. We noticed because her voice was a give away. I never did get to see her while we were eating since it would have been a little much to turnaround and stare. But my wife and our friend who were facing opposite me got to see her come and go as we ate.

D

Yeah... because pro "wrestling" is soooo popular in the rest of the world...

WHAT? It's not?

Yeah, well actually I haven't watched pro wrestling in about twenty plus years, but Greg was a pretty big name back then. It was just a little strange to see this huge dude get on the plane looking quite angry and have that little tickle at the back of your head that says "I know this bloke from somewhere".

I did an image search when I got home and there was no mistaking the scowl. It was Greg.

Really random...

Nina Hartley

Tristan Taormino
Franklin Del Roy
Billy Graham

(wait... seen in person?! Wouldn't that include all the concerts and musicians I'd have "seen?")

I was working on the assumption that they had to be seen 'in the wild' rather than 'at work' so the Queen in a parade wouldn't count but bumping into her in Safeway would.

Hmmm...

Most of the few famous people I've seen close up have been (mostly classical) musicians, during my 12 years playing in the professional orchestras here.

Pavarotti (he had to stop in the middle of the concert, and as he was leaving the stage he stopped when he got to me, put his hand on my shoulder, and said "I'm so sorry". I told him it was all right. :p I hadn't paid for a ticket, after all.)

Shirley Bassey (a real prima donna, kept us waiting on stage at the first rehearsal for 2 hours  )

Harry Connick Jr (nice guy)

Jessye Norman, Kathleen Battle, various pianists and violinists etc whose names musicians or concert-goers would recognize.

I saw Salman Rushdie from a few meters away once, and I played at the 25th wedding anniversary party for the King and Queen of Norway. I saw Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and various other crown heads of Europe. That was a fun gig, because everyone in the country knew the party was happening at the castle. I was all dressed up, called a cab, got in and said "To the palace". The cabbie turned around, looked at me a bit uncertainly and asked if he should take me to the door round back. "Nope," I said, "the front". :D

I don't think I've ever met anyone famous. I did get told off by a TV weatherman back in highschool though.

What did you do, rain on his parade, give him a snow job, or steal his thunder? :p I'm sure whatever it was, you didn't mean to precipitate anything.

It would, but I spoze I meant seen in public but not doing their job... at leisure, off duty, down the shops, eating a pizza, having a beer or whatever.

Or seen/met close up to talk to in a way most people don't get to see/talk to them.

The whole notion of celebrity is so bizarre. Why are we even talking about these people? They're just people. Like us.

OR ARE THEY?

:D A+ punning there ;-)

I was actually at some interschool science competition and there was some sort of presentation going on. I whispered something to my friend next to me and this guys turns around and (rudely) tells me to be quiet. I then realised who it was. :D

William Shatner - at Chateau Lake Louise.
Earl Spencer (Princess Diana's brother) - At Lake Louise ski resort.
Thomas Keneally - at the pizzaria at Perisher Valley.
Larry Emdur - at the restaurant I worked in.
George Negus - same place.
The guy who plays Dennis Denuto in "The Castle" - on a plane to Melbourne.
Billy Connolly - at a film shoot in Sydney for "The Man who sued God"
Stevie Wonder - in a shopping centre in Singapore when he was touring.

My favourite:

The members of the band "Simply Red" in a tiny copy watch shop in Singapore.
