The old PM G5 still has the allure. Give in.... lol.

LOL..I think I'm going to..

But the hack with the 8 HDD bays, corsair water cooling and over clocked 2700K has some appeal..17,200ish geekbench quiet as a mouse, uses less power..all the logic and none of the love..

I use a shared computer (A G4 iBook) as my main machine. Soon, I'll convert my Clamshell into my main machine with a newer OS, battery and extra RAM, and will use a Key Lime once I can afford it. I also use a solo-core Mac Mini (Also a shared computer) but I only use it when I need Intel software. I used to have a Leopard iBook G4 that worked very, very well as my main machine.

I have an intel imac for my desktop at home. Love the machine, however unless i am out chasing tornadoes and need to use a windows laptop... I perfer to use my g4 15" aluminum powerbook 1.33/512 for most of my daily use. The ppc Macs seem to be built like a tank and can handle being used all day with no complaints.

I think this might be me if I ever get a PPC. I've been really tempted to buy a PowerMac G4 but haven't found what I wanted locally. Well, there was one listing but the dude will not reply to my emails. It's been up for over a month.

Don't get me wrong, I love my MacBook, but, after 6 years of sitting on the couch or sitting hunched over a table staring at a 13" screen, I would really love to sit back at a desk and do whatever I need to do. I don't use this for work or anything, so it's really just entertainment and such.

I would like to play some older games. Age of Empires II, Diablo II, along with a few others would be nice to play. I can't see myself dropping $30 on a recent game. I haven't paid that much for a game in about 12 years so I think it may sting a bit.

I do have some Windows games I can play, but I really don't want to install Windows XP on my beautiful MBP. It's bad enough there's a small little scratch on it.

I have a small home recording studio and all I use is my PM G5 2.3ghz....I freaking love it. Its so much faster than my windows machine for recording, and to even think of upgrading to Intel at this point would be ridiculous! The cost is just to insane for the small amount of pay off.

How much faster is the Quad G5 with DDR2 over a Dual 2.7 with DDR400? for day to day tasks, like Photoshop processing, rendering and such...

Photoshop is a real memory intensive app. The quad can render noticeably faster than the dual 2.7. The benefit here isn't so much the extra CPU power, but rather increased memory bandwidth. 533MHz vs 400MHz

I would say anything SMP aware (and aware of more than 2) and the Quad is goign to smoke the 2.7 - But anything not SMP aware (or limited to dual aware) and the 2.7 will beat by a small margin. This seems bourne out on web benchmarks as well so overall go with the Quad out of the two.

Sift your way through this to help with the decision ;)

Well, I also use my PPC Late2005 2.0GHz G5 tower as a main computer.I had original Air and I am still very disappointed of this product, overheating, freezes and sluggishness all the time -sold it after just 6 months of use.I got second hand C2D Black MacBook, that boy was much better computer but 3 months ago my screen went black and the whole thing was sold for parts-motherboard issue.
Now main Mac -is my G5 again. I added 6 GB RAM and X1900XT Mac edition and this setup makes me smile all the time.
I am Bulgarian and read PowerPC Mac section for 2 years and I am very proud to be one of you.My English is not good but I manage to get by somehow.
Take Care everyone.

Mac PPC as Main Machine

Actually there are 4 active Mac ppc machines in our home: My main machine is a G5 Dual 1.8 4gRAM running Leopard and also boots into Kubuntu 12.04 then for work I have a Powerbook G4 15" 1.67ghz Dual Layer 1g RAM running Leopard. My roommate uses a Mac Mini G4 1.25ghz 1g RAM running Leopard and my son uses a G3 iMac 400mhz 512mb RAM running Tiger and OS 9 classic. Its a shame Apple abandoned PPC. These have all been very reliable, stable machines for us. I also have a G4 MDD that the G5 replaced that works fine but just sits collecting dust. :apple:

Until a few days ago i had used my powermac G5 Dual 2.7 as my main Machine and it was wonderful to live with, i doubt any 7 year old PC would have been as useful as that was, until the water cooling finally went.

I've been using my G5 since 2005. All those rumors about the water cooling were myth, I've had zero issues with mine running 24/7.

certain machines werent affected as they used a different liquid cooling system, its not a myth as mine has leaked and finally broken

its a known problem that affected more than just 1 or 2 machines, im not complaining i cant believe an LC system lasted 7 years without any maintenance

I have 2 G4 MDD running.
One is a 1.42 i put a 1.25 Card in as the Power Unit blow always after a few Weeks. Now its OK.
Now i got me a 1Ghz Dual Xserve G4.
It runs well.Got them from Ebay for £37.- and have anywhere a G5 Logicboard with 2.3 Ghz CPU's to fiddle in perhaps.
Only one Thing i have to say:"Dont call the MDD loud!" :) listen to the Xserve to know what i mean.
Yep,have a quicksilver with dual 800mega where i put a 750 Watt Power Unit and a ATX Motherboard (Window 7 compatible) with Intel Dualquad 3.0 Ghz CPU.
Will put in 16 Gb ram,but have problem to fit Optical Drive as Ram needs space.Need to cut a peace out or fiddle a Drive from iMac in
Hope i've done till July/August
Run also a Acer 5720 Travel Mate for on the go
But my Working Machine is the PPC

...Was the official statement 6 years ago. It's a known issue affecting more than just a few PowerMacs, just do a quick Google.

Google is not a source of data. The fact remains that out of the hundreds of thousands sold, only a small percent failed. Easy access to the internet increases the number of people to see whiners cry.

Apple themselves acknowledged the problem and extended the warranty on those G5's. It's a documented issue, like the video card issues with the iBooks.
