I am getting one for an 11 year old daughter. Hasn't been ordered yet. She wants a silver and we are still deciding which storage size she will need.

For her use nothing on that list is of concern except for the front facing camera not being the latest and greatest when she FaceTime calls her best friend. Still, that's not a huge deal.

If I were the one getting it, I would be concerned with no 128 GB model and the first iteration Touch ID sensor, which never worked for me. At all. The new sensor works well for me. Those two things would possibly be deal breakers if I were in the market for an iPhone for myself right now.

The screen is too small for me to care about dual domain pixels. I never cared before when I had a 5S and won't care now.

No LTE advanced is a bit of a bummer but that's still new to me anyway.

I don't often use 3D Touch. Frankly it seems to make the screen response a bit spazzy for me.

I don't know what the barometer does.

Personally if i was in the market for a 4 inch phone , the touch ID would be a deal breaker.
People forget what a great piece of technology the second generation touch ID is. It is lightning quick.

The first gen touch ID is unusable for me now after owning an iphone 6s plus.

So, I had an iphone 6 + for 17 months (the first gen 6 +) and wanted to go back to a smaller form factor. I just got tired of having to deal with the massive size of the plus, even for a bigger guy. I was contemplating getting the SE because it was very appealing and offered a tremendous price, but I ultimately opted to go with a 6s instead and use an early upgrade through Sprint. My wife already had a 6 so I was already comfortable with it and decided, for me at least, that going back to the 4 inch screen size would be a little too small for what I wanted. So I skipped the SE and I'm now loving my new 6s.

Not that its any of my business, but I got my 10 year old daughters used iPhone 5s, the price point was low 200 hundreds and if they did something to the phone, I'd be out of 200 and nothing more. I'm not criticizing your decision, just pointing out what I did :)

Oh don't worry I don't take it as criticism. I value the opinions and experiences of fellow parents. I've seen the loss and destruction wrought by this age group and indeed it normally would be crazy to spend too much on an iPhone for a kid. I'm willing to take a chance here for a number of reasons.

My 11 year old daughter is my late in life baby and she came along at a time when my parents and in-laws and even my husband and myself are starting to break down physically. A lot of the time we end up having to drop everything and tend to the elders. And we've done a few stints in the ER ourselves.

So she spends a lot of time in hospitals and clinics and the retirement home cheering everyone up. She never complains about being bored. She sits quietly with her iPad or iPhone through long waits at the hospital. She has had to do this since she was about 5.

It's not exactly the kind of life I would wish for her (or us) but I think it's given her empathy, patience, compassion and a maturity beyond her years. And a sense of accomplishment to know that she was there for her loved ones through cancer and other ailments and seen them beat it and credit her love as a help.

As for why we would go with the SE instead of a good deal on an iPhone 5s, she has gone bonkers for the Live Photo features. She may start taking my place as the family paparazzi. So we are opting for the SE for her. She's probably less likely to break her iphone than I am, but loss is always a risk with kids. We do get the phones insured for loss and theft and breakage.

Getting an iPhone SE 64GB Space Gray for the wifey at some point in the next few months. She has an iPhone 5 16GB Space Gray. She has been holding out for the 4" model to return, lol. But she's still not in any hurry to upgrade right away. She hates all the iPhones with white bezels so she only gets black. I agree. She keeps hoping that one day there will be a dark purple or green iPhone with black front, haha.

- It does not have 3D Touch
- It does not have a Barometer
- Front facing camera is still 1.2mp
- Does not offer the 128GB model
- First iteration slower TouchID sensor
- No dual domain pixels
- No LTE advanced

1. It sucks that it doesn't have 3D touch, but I don't have it on my 6+ so I doubt I'll miss it on the SE.
2. So? I have a barometer on my smartwatch for when I go out for a run.
3. Never did get the point of selfies, but I WOULD like a better camera for Skype/FaceTime.
4. While I can see this being a problem for some, there's plenty of people who don't want to play games on a phone or who are like me and have an iPad for that purpose. Also, regular backups to a Mac/PC or cloud storage service and maintenance of unused apps really help make the 64 GB SE a viable option.
5. There are plenty of people who complain that the second-generation Touch ID sensor is too fast, and there's also plenty of people (me included) that feel that the first-generation sensor was very accurate and fast enough.
6. I'll give you this one, it sucks to not have dual domain pixels. After seeing it on the 6S/6S+ and the current-gen lineup of iPads, it would be a lovely feature to have... but then again, I never had any complants with the iPhone 5S' display.
7. Can't really think of any arguments against this one, but maybe next year? :D

Definitely want to get an iPhone SE, though. I adored my old Galaxy S1 which was also a 4 inch phone and after so many years of small phones being little but an afterthought, a budget option, or a gimped version of a flagship device, it's nice to see somebody giving them a second wind. I really really hope this isn't a one-off thing and that we continue to see a 4 inch option from here on out.

4 inches is just a great size for a phone. It enables flawless one-handed usage, it's light and fits in your pocket easily, and it's easy to hold on to. I'd much rather have my iPad Mini for when I need my bigger-screen fix. :)

I ordered it this morning, 64 GB, silver. This will be my first smartphone. I really like my old stupidphone, but I do love gadgets and finally decided that the re-introduction of a 4-inch iPhone was the time. I don't like the size of the bigger phones. I have my tablets for that.

I almost didn't get it when it turned out that the fifty dollar price is really eighty dollars because of the so-called "activation fee" and a $20 increase in the monthly line fee for exactly the same plan. It costs them nothing to "activate" a phone. They should just admit that the price is $80 rather than $50. But I phoned them (Verizon) and I was extremely calm and polite as I expressed my unhappiness over the price obfuscation, and they cut both fees in half for me. They will credit half the activation fee back to my account, and raise my monthly charge by $10 instead of $20. I decided that was a reasonable compromise. YMMV. I'm a long-time Verizon customer and that may have helped. Plus they probably figure that I'll end up spending even more because with the phone I'm likely to need to buy more data than my present plan. But I'm okay with that because if I do need to buy more data it would mean that I'm finding worthwhile uses for the phone.

I'm not entirely sure all I'll use it for. Navigation for sure. It may replace my iPod Touch for music and podcasts and airline boarding passes.

Last night, even before ordering it, I dreamed that somebody sat on it and bent it. :(
[doublepost=1458837523][/doublepost]P.S. I've never had a device with a barometer in it, and I never knew that other phones have a barometer, and I really don't think I need a barometer, yet reading here that that's a thing, I'm oddly disappointed that my new phone won't have one. o_O

No,
but when my iPhone 6 is ready to be retired I'll probably be getting that year's version of the SE.
It's way too appealing.
I love being able to use the phone one handed.
I like the size of my iphone 6...but more often than not...I don't love the size of my iphone 6 (ie, when I drop it)...

That's not a good marginal analysis, you left out the cost of having the above items, which is the decision factor.
$16GB iPhone SE: $399
$16GB iPhone 6S: $649
I am not counting $16GB iPhone 6 at $549 (has A8 instead of A9) for simplicity but you can reason about it in the same way.

which means that $250 (or 38% of an iPhone 6S, or 62% of an iPhone SE) buy you a slightly bigger screen and the above items.
Is $250 (plus taxes that will be higher in the more expensive model) worth the barometer, and a faster Touch ID, and 3D touch? You choose.
If so: upgrade.
If not: do not upgrade.

It's easy to say that an Honda Civic sucks if you compare it to a Lamborghini without mentioning the cost.

I've been unhappy with the screen size of my 6 since getting it. I moved directly from a 4s to a 6, and appreciate the greater real estate, but it's crossing the line of what I find to be a comfortable size.

The 5/5s to me is an ideal size, so I'm happy to be able to move down to that size without having to seriously compromise the internals/feature set to do so. It will be faster, have a better camera, and longer battery life than my iPhone 6. I've not had force touch so won't miss it, and have a mercury column barometer on the wall in my office :) .

It won't be an immediate purchase, but a 64gb space gray is going to happen in the next few months. I think my dad will get one also-he's been complaining about the size of the 6 since getting and doesn't carry it half the time because of that.

For me its not the size of the screen on my 6 that I'm not happy with, nor is it price. Its the overall dimensions of the phone. I often have to pocket my phone and its just not comfortable. I will miss the screen at first I'm sure but my phone is used mostly for basic task anyway. I think the tradeoff will be worth it.

- Excellent
- I have one on the wall
- That's all it needs to scan gift cards
- It's a phone, not a computer
- Faster than a passcode
- What's that?
- It's a phone, not an iPad
lol I disagree with "its a phone, not a computer"

Its way more than a computer than a phone. Don't kid yourself now.

Its just a phone....is what my 85 year old grandma is using that costs 7.99 at best buy.

Its a phone...with internet, email, games, camera, calculator, music, and so much more does not make it "just" a phone.

Heres some articles that prove its a computer

I've never bought out a contract for anything. I've always figured that the phone I've got should last me for at least two years, and with what seemed like the inevitable eventual end of 4 inch phones as we know them, I was resigned to just hold on to my 6+ for as long as possible or unless something came out that had a killer feature I wanted.

Form factor ended up being the killer feature. :) I'm definitely going to buy one when my carrier gets the SE.

Same here. Screen on the 6 is great quality-wise (reading, browsing, photos, etc), just dislike using the phone. In the end being able to use it without having to move it around in my hand to reach corners, and to walk up the stairs without a phone being annoying in your pocket, is more important for me than the bigger screen.

Lmao @ her concern is front facing camera for selfie. Barometer is to measure height and altitude such as floor and up and down steps.

While I agree that it's definitely a computer, the second link is massively misleading. Sure, a smartphone might be your only computer today, or a year ago when the article was published. That's because some people don't have or want a computer at all. But screen size will always keep a phone from replacing the computer for most of us. At least until there's a way to project an image into your eye that eliminates the need for a screen altogether. Maybe in a decade there will be glasses that give you an image like the heads-up display in some fancy cars, and that, linked to your phone or wristwatch or earring will be your only computer. But for now, anybody who wants a full-on computer will want something with a bigger screen than a phone.

A phone is all the computer you need if you don't really need a computer.

But it's true that today's smartphones have so much more power than the biggest mainframe computers of the Apollo age that it boggles the mind.

I was tempted to buy the SE as I like the design very much. I went to the store today to check out the size of the 5s.
But I have to say it is just too small for me coming from an iPhone 6. Can't image to use a phone this small productively.
If it was somewhere between 4.3" and 4.5" I'd buy one instantly...

Your daughter can use the rear facing camera for FaceTime and be in front of a mirror.
