In my case, I work 10 hours a day, with producers sitting behind me, paying upwards of $300 an hour.
Its important for me to know who's contacting me, and for what, as i too am a freelancer.
Missing a specific message for another gig, can easily cost me upwards of $10k., if I don't answer those messages immediately. I need to get this information, without the client thinking I'm "playing" with my phone or iPad.

I don't get it. You don't want the producers seeing you 'playing' with your iPad but if you get an important message they are cool with you answering it? You can't use your iPad (except to answer important messages) but you can keep an eye on it? Also, at three grand a day and 10k riding on a missed message I'd have an answering service (that's a person, not a machine). Perhaps there is more you could say. Anyway, if I was in your situation, I'd buy the tools I needed and be done with it; I wouldn't waste much time complaining about Apple.

Why are so many peple singing the praises about this update and crisiting those who say it lacked?

Would you be annoyed if Apple did add wiglets and flash? Would you still use the IPad?

There's an attitude with this product you don't care what it doesn't have. It's a bit pro Apple?

Many are nieve if they think Apple can't improve the device. I'm sure many missing features currently on Android will appear on IOS 6.

Most people are giving reasonable opinions. Most criticism is towards people who think their opinions are more than opinions about what they want.

There's an attitude with this product you don't care what it doesn't have.

That's right, because it (like every other thing in the world) lacks an infinite number of things. If it doesn't do what I want, I ignore the product and don't buy it. It is silly to buy it and then wring my hands about how it doesn't do what it doesn't do.

Everyone thinks Apple will improve it. Complaining that it's not always already improved is moronic.

Not me - I'm actually very impressed with iOS 5 , it's iOS as it should have been from the start!

Cheers, Macjim.

So, being an android user, you can't see the advantage to having access to all that info, on one screen, at a moments glance?

I see the advantage but thats handled with the Notification Center. All of that info is in the NC. Click on the link I posted in my last post that takes you to Apple's page describing the new features. In the NC section, you can clearly see your email, messages and calendar. Being an Android users as well, the only difference I see is how it is implemented. Both implementations provide the same information in a convenient manner. They just look different.

Why are so many peple singing the praises about this update and crisiting those who say it lacked?
Im criticizing the ones who are saying it lacked because the main consensus here is that people are upset over not including widgets. My argument is that the Notification Center does the same thing widgets do, just in a different way.

Would you be annoyed if Apple did add wiglets and flash? Would you still use the IPad?
No I wouldnt be mad, I probably would just never use widgets like I dont use them in OSX. If Flash would ever be implemented, I probably wouldnt have a need for it anyway. Flash rarely comes into play in my every day useage.

There's an attitude with this product you don't care what it doesn't have. It's a bit pro Apple?
What site do you think you are on? You do realize this is an Apple site right? So, yes, most people on here are pro Apple.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of things I have to have. One is 100% iCal comaptability, as one f the studios uses it for scheduling. And schedules change daily, so I absolutely need my calendar to be up to date.

Otherwise I would have gotten an android tablet.
I known my full schedule, and I rely in my personal interaction with clients to keep my schedule filled.
So, yes, I need to know when specific, very important messages come in, at which point I CAN step out. What I cant do, is continuously be stepping out, or spending time clicking to apps, to see what is in a. Certain message.

Those who are in situations like I am, understand.

Remember, with the screen real estate, that is currently wasted, you could have several widgets, right there on scree.

This is just one small example.
The exclusion of widgets is idiotic, and again, should be up to me to use or not.

Oh my god well I make $10,000 per hour and I think widgets are stupid.

Wow, reading this thread further solidifies that no matter what improvements Apple makes to iOS, not everyone will be satisfied.

First off, a lot of you widget guys are just plain ol' lazy. Widgets aren't needed at all. It takes just ONE touch to open an app to give you the same, if not more info than a widget would. It'll take you longer to get to the widget home screen you need than to open an app. And if Apple does finally implement widgets, guess what'll happen...everyone will be saying how iOS copied Android even though widgets have been implemented in OSX for years now (which I NEVER use).

Second, the overall UI will not change for a long time so get over it and get used to it or sell your iDevice if you don't like it. Hell, Windows has been using the same UI since Windows 95. All theyve done with the newer versions is add a prettier skin. The grid system is, by far, the simplest UI implementation out of any tablet. You guys forget that Apple caters to the masses, not us techies. The mass majority of people don't want to be scrolling through pages and different awkward menus just to try and open an app or utility. They want to see an icon and touch it to do what they need to do. That's it. Apple makes their devices for anyone to pick up and use without hesitation. You can not do that with any other tablet. And by YOU I mean not us techies, but my mom/dad/grandparents who are not as techie as i am.

Third, FLASH WILL NOT HAPPEN! Flash sucks period. I, personally, have not missed Flash one bit since having my iDevices. I've very rarely come across a site that I can't access because it's done in Flash. It has not changed my experience one bit. Most sites I visit use HTML5. Now this point is commensurate on what your daily needs are, but for me, it's not needed.

Fourth, WTF is "proper" multitasking? Do you not have the ablity to double tap the home button to bring up the dock to switch between apps? Why do you want multiple apps crammed onto a 10" screen? Seems unnecessary to me but to each their own.

Finally, a lot of the stuff you guys are bitching about that wasnt talked about is actually there. Apple talked about 10 of 200+ new features in iOS5. Go back and look at the screen shots of all the features from the keynote.

The only thing I wish they would have done is implement BiteSMS-like (jailbreak app) messaging overlays. It does suck to have to switch to the iMessages app to send a quick message. But that's not enough to warrant calling iOS5 a disappointment.

Amen Brother !!!
100% right about all points and thank god you wrote this post because I was starting to get annoyed with all the Widget and Flash Crazy people !!!
If widgets and Flash are Sooo important ... then get yourself and Android Tablet.

iOS doesn't have Widgets, Web OS doesn't have Widgets and WinPhone 7 doesn't have Widgets ( tho they have Tiles that update ....)

I don't see why not having widgets is a let down for this OS upgrade.

Every iOS upgrade, Apple has tackled one Big issue at a time.

iPhone OS 2 = support for third-party applications (App store)
iPhone OS 3 = Copy and Paste
iOS 4 = Multitasking
iOS 5 = Notifications

I think they very well chose the right priority for this upgrade !

That was all standard fare in Android from day one.

Even though iPad is the first tablet for the masses, it still isn't for everyone.

So? Who said it was for everyone?

I take it 'for the masses' is supposed to be a smear - oh, now I get it. If you aren't satisfied by the iPad it's because of your high standards of cunning and reason with your special, distinct needs, and aren't like all those other people who just buy what they want and get on with their lives.

Yup. Most times, what they are discussing, when they think they are discussing multitasking, is the taskswitching user interface for open apps, not multitasking itself.

I have my own opinions on the matter of task switching interface of the iPad and to me it's the best and the worst at the same time.

The iPad suffers from 1) the double click interface which is very cumbersome to use and 2) no preview for apps when you're in the switching interface. On the contrary - I'm going to use the Blackberry PlayBook as the comparison since I have it - the PlayBook allows the user to see what's going on in the open apps and scrolling&flicking away apps in the interface is fairly intuitive and easy.

However the game changer for me the multi-touch gesture. It is, to me, simply the fastest and most intuitive way to switch between two apps because it's so fast and easy to perform. While PlayBook's bezel swipe action is nice and neat, it involves more steps and you have to consciously swipe from the bezel to the screen, which to me is a bit more involving than the iPad's gesture.

I think the best of the both world would be to have an expose-like function assigned to the double click while keeping the multitouch gesture. I believe that'll make it easily the best task switching interface available.

No wounder they were ... They almost got a year and half to hear what people were complaining abput the iphone and add it to their os .... I. Sorry but I dont see this as being the reason that Android is soooo much wounderful.

Waiting for oyher to make the move first and wait and learn from their mistakes can sometimes make a better prodcut ...

just like Apple just did with notifications

My feelings about iOS5..

Some neat stuff but mostly things that really shouldve been in iOS 4. iMessage was pretty obvious thing to include, the better notification system etc. Probably didn't get these features in iOS 4 because of the iPhone 3G.

Didn't come through on some things I wanted like a basic filesystem (guess ill keep using Dropbox), improved and different UI on the iPad, adding a bit more to the lock screen and perhaps more multitasking features.

I wasn't overly disappointed though, some neat new stuff to play with. Im sorta happy that iOS5 is on the 3GS but they'll probably launch it with a new iPhone (and im available to upgrade next month haha).

Don't ya just love people who complain about missing features and then when they get them they complain that they should have been there already. :p

I wan't really complaining just saying that those features were both a desire of the community and within Apples ability to implement back when iOS 4 was released.

Depends on what you call "standard." For example, using copy&paste in Android can be painful enough that I often don't even bother trying, especially when I use FroYo (I alternate between FroYo and Gingerbread ROMs on my Android phone) You have to use three different interfaces to access copy&paste within a single window.

Yes, having copy&paste is great but even though it had the feature first, Android still hasn't caught up fully in usability, ditto for Symbian which had a ton of features in comparison but always been painful to use.

With iOS5 Apple cleared up many deficiencies people complained about that, I think for my criteria, it puts iOS significantly ahead of everything else when you combine it with the polish it always had plus the iCloud factor. Unless you're crazy about widgets that is, but I suspect that for most people having the quick access to weather is more than enough. Then again, I personally never use widgets on my Windows, OSX or Android phones, so maybe I'm just biased against them.

I just ask devs if they get to leave feedback to Apple about the beta iOS5 that they recommend the weather pulldown get added to the iPad lockscreen. All that space, let's use it:)

I think the iOS 5 beta has some nice features; just tried out iMessage, pretty nice. The changes to Safari are great. Love the tabbed browsing. The notifications are a welcome addition.

Unfortunately I must have too much on my iPad 2 as when I try to backup to iCloud it says I do not have enough storage. Kind of a bummer, as I'd like to see how it works. And I look forward to seeing the iWork apps get updated to be able to save stuff to the cloud and then to my mbp.

Can't say I am disappointed in it, just look forward for apps that are malfunctioning (The Weather Channel App is DOA; The Daily no longer shows video clips; the NY Times App crashes regularly) to get updated, but it comes with the territory of living the life of a beta tester I guess. :D

Another $5 for something that should be built in.

Let me guess. You'll get personally attacked over that statement while people continue to ignore the sentiment.

It's a shame we have to wait for Apple to say something is cool before some people here can admit it. It happened with Cut/Paste, Cameras, Cloud solutions and will happen with voice command and widgets.

Well since widgets seem to be what everyone is talking about so Ill start there. Just like I mentioned before, as of now, Notification Center is Apple's answer to widgets. You can add almost any info to it to have at your swiping fingertips. I italicize almost because, Im not a dev so I dont know exactly how much info can be accessed via NC. Based on the screen shots here on the Apple website, email, calendar events, messages, weather and stocks can be added to it. Having a widget that has the same functionality would be pointless.
I know what you mean by it feeling redundant to have multiple ways to access the same app, but that redundancy is actually very beneficial to our individual workflows. And the thing is, Apple knows this too and already implements this redundancy with the "music" app by offering iPod control in both the lock screen and the task switcher as well as the actual app. So what this demand for widgets comes down to is for Apple to continue their "Music control everywhere" idea and offer easier access through the form of widgets.

Yes, info in the notification window is a workaround but due to the limited space then by the middle of the day when you've got 15 emails, 3 Words with Friends games, 4 texts and the endless random notifications piled up you realize it can't actually fit that much soit would be nice to offset some less essentials to optional widgets (weather/stocks/groupon etc).

And one of the situations I prefer widgets over an app/notification shortcut is quick text input for things like Twitter, Facebook or Messaging. Lately I've been noticing battery drain from phantom apps but since Apple doesn't offer a "kill all" function then I find manually shutting apps to be a pain. So the solution would be a widget where I can make a quick text response in a widget window and not waste time with the full app.

When implemented properly then Widgets are incredible so I think their omission has more to do with Apple trying to find a way to do it their way rather than them choosing to avoid them.

I would never attack him or anyone else over the sentiment. But while I agree that a lot of stuff is cool, it's just not the case that every cool thing must be free.
