I know that feeling, I dread to think how many hours we sunk into those games. I could've probably done half the tracks in B3 blindfolded back then :D Some classics in your collection there, no Wave Race though? Tut tut ;)

I figured I'd throw something which I usually find a more difficult game to emulate at the MBA. Gamecube again, F-Zero GX, Sand Ocean track with 29 opponents, still at 4K and that's where we hit problems. No more solid 60fps, with that combo, it was dipping down to 55fps at some points. But I mean c'mon, it's still running under Rosetta, so I'm still bloody impressed.
Hah, there's still time for Wave Race at some point ;) Retro game collecting is rather expensive for GC these days. It's the Nintendo tax.

I'm not surprised about Sand Ocean. I think this track gave me some issues via the ODE on my actual GC, until I stopped using some of the extra settings like forced widescreen. But the biggest issue being drops to 55fps still speaks volume at how fantastic the M1, especially given how this is running via Rosetta.

Yeah, that’s why I decided to throw Sand Ocean at it. Like you say, with it doing that, under Rosetta, it’s nothing to be disappointed with. I’d imagine if it can do that, then most any GC game shouldn’t pose an issue at a decent resolution.

Tomorrow I should probably get back to doing things I’ll actually use it for, but the GameCube emulation has been an interesting little side journey.....

.... I say that now, tomorrow I’ll probably be halfway through Metroid Prime in 4K ;)

It’s the 512GB, so it has 8 cores. Though how much of a difference that one extra core really makes I don’t know. I doubt it’s a massive leap over the 7 core.

It’s been surprising me at every turn so far, I’m just trying to decide what to throw at it next. Probably the Dolphin emulator. Not something I’d ordinarily be fussed with - I still have all of my old consoles.

But I’ve seen some videos on YouTube running GameCube games at 4K 60fps, the notion of which on the M1 through Rosetta just doesn’t feel right somehow. I have to see it with my own eyes :D
It's funny now how over-hyped Apple's previous releases seem... they kinda cried wolf, in a way, since when they say "fastest Mac ever" those who've seen several years of releases just kind of roll our eyes and think, "yeah, okay, it's obviously faster than last year, but...".

This year it seems like they actually wound-up kind of inadvertently understating the performance... or... well, no, they still made it sound earth-shattering... haha... The difference is that this time, it actually is kinda earth-shattering. :)

Very excited to see what they come up with for a 16" MacBook Pro. That's the machine I'll be replacing, once I know all my main software is supported—either natively or in Rosetta (since relying on virtualization seems to be a minor issue).

I've been holding off on a Metroid Prime replay in the hopes there's a remaster on Switch. Probably won't be able to hold out for much longer. When you tried Dolphin, did you have the M1 connected to an external monitor?

When I was cranking it up to 4K resolution yeah, I hooked it up to my 4K monitor via a TB3 dock.

I’d love to see a set of remakes for Metroid, before they finally get around to releasing 4. But then, I’m still waiting on a Super Mario World HD remake... a boy can dream :D

Damn dude. You sound like other computer manufacturers making Wintel machines don't overhype their products. Every company does, and be real about it, you would do the same thing if you owned a tech company.

Yeah, but I expect most of us eye roll, too, when they do it. :p

Like, duh, why would you even make something that's slower?

Yup, for a long, long time it’s all been a bit ho hum in a way. Of course they’ll always say this is the most powerful Mac/iPhone/iPad/Watch/Loo roll dispenser/kitchen sink we have ever made. That exact line is trotted out every single year.

But you’re dead right, this is the first time it’s really meant something in an awfully long time. It’s been so long since we’ve seen that kind of generational jump from an Apple computer, long overdue. I’ve not been this excited about a Mac since the Intel transition, and that was a long time ago.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what they do with the iMac and of course the Mac Pro. Can you imagine that beast?

But having said that, the way this wee critter is performing, I might actually just stay with laptops again now. So long as there’s always a way to avoid the TouchBar.

Please do yourself a huge favor and step out of the tech bubble/tech forum for once and realize in the real world people aren't "rolling their eyes" at Apple's advertisements. The rest of the real world represents the majority of Apple's customers. Tech forums are less than 1/10th of a percentage of Apple's customers. But I guess you prefer Apple to say, "We have new computers, nothing special, nothing innovative, but they are the latest model." That ought to sell a lot of machines. 🙄

The real world typically doesn't pay attention to tech news. When their old device is too slow or develops issues, then they replace it with a new one that's within budget on whichever platform they prefer.

This is the first time in a while that new Macs have been genuinely exciting.

And you just stated what I stated. That was exactly my point. Apple doesn't advertise for tech forums. Just like when a new iPhone comes out they are not advertising to people with the previous model.

Gold MBA with base storage but I did upgrade to the 16gb RAM. Didn't see the need for storage as this isn't my main computer. Just wanted one to test it out and play around to see if I liked the M1. Hoping for more MBPs and iMacs with it next year to fully upgrade. So far I like it.

I'm surprised there is no stock locally or on Apple at the moment. I had no idea it was going to be this tough getting the Air. My wife and I were discussing how old my Mac's were and decided to look into a M1 Air. Best Buy had one store with stock and I was going to pick it up today but all sold out now. I was expecting some hesitation due to the new chip but wow, guess all those positive YouTube reviews got to everyone! 🤣

I'll just wait now. I was hoping to get it all setup during the holidays with no distractions.
B&H Photo has a handful of models in stock (16/256 and 16/512 M1 MacBook Air, as I’m writing this).

Did you get a M1, KP?
I ordered mine as soon as the special event ended, and have had it since Day 1. That said, I didn't quite get the configuration I wanted, so I did order a Cyber Monday special from Adorama with the color and specs I wanted. That has yet to ship. Fingers crossed that it arrives by January 8 (the date at which I need to return the original M1 MBA). I do have an Intel MacBook Pro I can use in the interim, in case it doesn't arrive by then.

That it us true. However, if we are talking strictly home use, I would treat myself to a M1 iMac (instead of a 16" MBP) when released. :D
I have the 16" MBP and when the new M-series 16" MBP comes out I'm trading this one in. I'm done with iMacs. Sick of the all in one system that's difficult to carry into the Apple store for service. Not sure why some here are acting like the 16" is suddenly this HUGE computer when Apple has been making the 15.4" MBP's for several years and they were a lot bigger and heavier than the 16".

Compared to a 13", the 16" is huge, in my opinion. And is what the lady bought whom I replied to.
