Who’s getting an M1 for Christmas?

Honestly, to me length of ownership doesn't even factor into it. I know my usage and I'd probably have 1TB 70-80% filled within a year.
That is a lot of storage to fill, at least for me. I got the base model MBA. I don't foresee that being a problem as I keep what is needed in the cloud.

As soon as the M1 was released, many here said it is the best laptop Apple has ever made. After less than a day with my new M1, I agree. It is so much better than the 2011, 2016TB & 2017TB MBP that I had. It will be interesting to see if I come to love using it as much as I have my iPad Pro.

Birthday/Christmas gifts to myself included:

- Mac mini M1 16GB/512GB
- MacBook Air M1 16GB/512GB

Sold my 2018 mini for more than I paid for the M1, so I’m pretending that the M1 was free. The MBA will be subsidised by the sale of my 2012 rMBP, which is in amazing shape. However, I can’t justify keeping it.

The mini is such a joy to use. It’s perceptibly faster than the 2018 i7 in even the smallest of ways, but the gap increases massively when doing anything particularly GPU reliant like video editing and any light gaming. Having Final Cut Pro render the timeline on the fly without stuttering is so refreshing on something as inexpensive and power efficient as the mini. Really looking forward to the arrival of the MBA.

Enjoy all of your respective toys, and all the best for the holidays!

I was about to buy on impulse - last second deal that popped up on Slickdeals for a base M1 MBA for $799.99 USD - $200 below retail for a just released M1...

Unexpected deal was my draw and figured it was a great Christmas gift for myself even though I didn't need it.

Unfortunately, it expired when I attempted to check out as the company sold out:

I doubt that deal was ever real ...

Been playing with mine for the last three days. Then just now, noticed this 😭😩

any of your logos have these bubbles? Ugh, don’t really want to exchange since I got everything set up.

You’re sure there’s no protective plastic covering on the logo? I didn’t have one on mine, but a couple things make me think you do: the bubbling (obvs) and the fact that the reflections are softened rather than sharp. The logo is highly reflective and I’d expect reflections in your photo to be very clear. Have you had a little careful play at the sides to see if it’s a plastic covering that can just peel away?

Thanks. I was really hoping this is the case and I’m just dumb. Tried with my nails but didn’t catch any plastic. Don’t wanna use anything else that may scratch it. Me trying to press the bubbles out like a screen protector does nothing to the bubbles. Ugh. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Yes!! I have nearly 3TB filled (of 4TB) on my MBP. I’ve spent too much time without reliable internet to be happy with cloud storage (even though where I live now is decent) so I always get as much as I can.

MBP 16GB / 1TB, already delivered on 15th of December - getting used to it, which is overall a nice experience.
Together with the LG Ultrafine 5K, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2 it turns out to be a quite decent setup, both in desktop and mobile mode.
Of course Big Sur 11.1 still brings in quite a range of bugs which affect M1 system's daily performance, but to be honest after the ... well, experience with Catalina I'm glad it's more the kind of "annoying and time consuming" type of bugs than the "seriously hindering and data-loss causing" type of bugs which were commonplace with Catalina.
And Big Sur 11.1(...on Apple Silicon) already seems to be in a better shape than 10.15.7(...on Intel), which looks like a very good sign for the future to me.

Actually, I'm quite happy with this setup, for me it is the best Mac I ever had.
Think Apple's decision to switch to their own processors couldn't have come at a better time - also considering that the M1 is just the beginning and we will see a lot of improvement - and most likely performance never seen before - in the next year and years to come.

If anyone wants to have a look at my setup with / without external peripherals, you're welcome:

Nice set-up, buddy.

What dongle is that, and how much did it cost?

I paid £20 for Apple’s USB - USB C dongle.

Sold my 2013 MBPR 15inch for an air m1 with 16gb of memory, that 15 inch MBPR was a damn brick compared to this. Super happy with m1 air its a no brainer purchase

Yea, thanks :)

It's a Satechi Hub, priced at around 80€: USB-C Slim Multi Port with Ethernet space grey

The biggest downside of it being - compared to the Apple USB-A Adapter - that it doesn't allow to connect very power-demanding peripherals to USB-A, like the Apple USB Super Drive (CD/DVD). Well, I can honestly barely remember plugging in that device anyway, and just in case I still have an iMac to connect to.

The biggest advantage is that you cannot only connect two USB-A devices, but also a HDMI screen (up to 4K@30Hz), SD-/Micro-SD Cards and Ethernet - and it still allows for USB-C charging passthrough. And all of this in just one good-looking device - as opposed to carrying around a whole bunch of white 1:1 Apple adapters for each of those interfaces...

Thanks, bud.

Appreciate the info.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Just setting up my wife’s and it’s downloading her full resolution photos from iCloud to the photos app.. For some reason her 2012 MacBook Pro would have fans on max and get hot to touch! This thing isn’t even warm!!! It’s bonkers and loving it so far! If it’s wasn’t rose gold I’d be making it mine 😂

M1 Christmas here. Got a Mac mini 8/512 to replace our 2011 mini for server duty, time machine backups and possible iOS gaming when kids get older since it will be connected to our LG OLED C7. The 2011 had a good run but could not handle our video playback from our iPhones 1080/60, 4K... forget it, and for the wife M1mba 8/512.

Merry Christmas!

Old setup:

2015 iMac 27" i5/24/1.1TB (replaced Fusion 2TB HD with 1TB SSD)
2019 MBP 16" i9/2.3/16/1TB silver

I bought the MBP last year with the intention of only having one machine and it took me a year to get around to doing it.

New setup as of a few days ago:

2019 MBP 16" i9/16/1TB silver
LG Ultrafine 5K

However, while picking up the LG, I couldn't resist buying the base MBA M1/8/256 SG. The base model is scarce at nearby Apple Stores. Microcenter had plenty a few days ago.

So much for only having one machine.

I didn't really enjoy carrying the MBP even around the house. It was not a good couch machine. The MBP and Ultrafine become the desktop replacing the iMac and the MBA will do couch duty.

I've had Mac portables since the PowerBook 100. I've owned many of the smaller ones over the years, like the PowerBook 2400c, PowerBook G4 12", and the original MacBook Air 11", but they had compromises like weak processors, dim screens, and poor battery life. This MBA M1 is very impressive so far.

Sorry to hear, bummer. Ours does not have that and has a mirror finish.

MBA 8GB 512GB from my folks. Just got a chance to run a benchmark, it blows the ass of my late 2015 27” retina 5k. Which to be fair is getting long in the tooth, but nice to have a major performance increase.

More than likely, the Apple logo will peel off completely. If that doesn't matter to you, keep your new toy. If that does bother you every time you see your Mac and or you think you might privately sell your Mac in the future, you should return the Mac and purchase another one.

Yes, M1 Christmas here as well! 😃 Got the MBA. It’s fantastic, great performance and I’ve yet to charge it once.

Now to sell my old 2018!

I bought a m1 MacBook for myself in the 8Gb/512Gb as it was an open sale item from someone returning. (great deal). but as I was trying to do some work, I'm one of the few people who can push the memory pressure to RED as I run automated scripts on 8gigs of files. So I might have to upgrade.
