I'm glad I have a "classic" macbook pro, but that doesn't mean that I'm not excited to be upgrading to a 13" unibody Macbook Pro.

been thinking about that but i might just add a 17" UB model to serve as my home computer since i really enjoy working with the feel of the classic.

I'm seriously stumped by Apple's decision to not even allow a matte option. The no button trackpad is also not as sensitive as the classic's, and the keyboard is more toy-like. The new unibodies are very quiet, though. Unfortunately, these three things that I look for in a laptop are basically all that I care about: screen, trackpad, and keyboard. My personal top 3 are all a downgrade with the unibodies, and I bought one to test it out and paid the price for my wanderlust.

I still have one of the older MBPs, from either 2006 or 2007 I forget. lol But I'm glad because, when I get a new one sometime next year hopefully after it is updated well (I know there's no point in waiting for technology because it always updates but still lol), it'll be a lot better for me than what I have now. I can't wait for the aesthetic design of the unibody one, the battery power's amazing and hopefully can only get better in time of course, etc. So I'm glad I still have an older one, more so because it'll make my next purchase even better lol :D

as i said before...

Sata the same...
no matte...
no express card
1 firewire...
same cpu architecture...
even the superdrive is the same...
aesthetics with the bezel STILL under investigation...(but this is only me)

better are:
RAM
Battery
robust costruction
easily change HDD

give me e MBP15'' with matte as the 17 and I ll take it YESTERDAY:D

I purchased my "classic" MBP a few months before the unibodies were released. I have to say that I was and still am quite pleased with what I got for the price I paid. The campus bookstore had a good deal I couldn't pass up.

For approx. $2,000 I got:

- 2.5Ghz, 512MB 8600, 200GB 7200 HDD, matte screen, & 2GB Ram
- iPod Touch
- HP All-In-One printer/scanner/copier
- 2 Years Apple Care

For my uses and purposes, my MBP still serves me well. Are the newer MBPs faster & more powerful? Sure. Would it make a difference for me? Not likely.

Although mine has currently died and Apple cocked up my warranty, I still love my classic MBP, I prefer the design completely over the newer models any day.

I love the design, and I have no problems with it at all. It does everything I need and it looks great. It may be "outdated" but when Snow Leopard comes out, no Intel Mac will be outdated. When I bought my MBP, it was right after January Mac World. I wanted the Penryn updates, but Apple didnt release anything. Then I noticed that it wouldnt be that great of an upgrade, small speed increases. I decided that I would save some money and I got the 2.2GHz Matte on eBay for $1650. Great deal at the time. Thank lord I didnt wait, I would have been computerless for about 2 months.

All the other threads are full of unibody people crying about the new revisions. I'd just like to say I'm still glad I got my MBP a month before the Unis came out. I still have my DVI(very useful and widely used), express slot(tons of options, SSD, eSata, card readers, etc.), the lovely silver keys, the glossy screen that is glossy and not mirror like, and Firewire 400-800. Anyone else feels this way? Anybody going to get a classic instead of a new uni? The only thing I envy slightly is the track pad. I's still a little on the fence about the trackpad. I like how big it is, which makes it easier for gestures. But I dont use tap to click ever and I hate how the new ones press click(i love my clicker button:D). Thoughts, rants? Anyone else think the classics were the sweet spot?

Right there with you! I too am really really glad I have a MBP "classic." Got mine on Oct 6th of 2008. A mere 8 days before the unibodies came out. I'm quite happy about it. I love love love my MBP classic.

August 29th, with full knowledge new versions (with possible changed appearances) were coming. I didn't want no 1st Gen defects either.

I love how, recently the biggest complaint has been with the screens of all apples notebooks, the saturation is not right, its not accurate enough, it's too bright, too dark etc etc etc, I'm so happy I'm "stuck" in the stone age with my classic :p

I am quite happy with my first gen MBP. It may be a bit dated (almost 3 years!) but it does exactly what I need it for. I plan on using this for at least another year.

15" 2.0 GHz Core Duo
2 GB ram
80 GB HDD

Pros : This may seem silly, but I love my DVI out on the right side, it fits my desk for my secondary monitor perfectly.

Cons : Battery life could be better.

I am totally happy with my classic MBP! I got my Santa Rosa on clearance in May 2008 right before they were all gone.

As everyone else has already said, classics have a lot of things the unibodies don't. Hopefully in two years when my Applecare is expired they will have a machine worth buying. Even then, I will keep this one around until it dies.

The classic truly was the last real "pro" model. I am very disappointed in the newest models. How can they call a laptop with integrated graphics a "Macbook Pro"?

I still rock the classic too..... it's a later Santa Rosa MBP from 2007.

After the first Penryns hit the market, I wasn't to eager to upgrade, so I made a promise to myself that I would not buy another notebook until Apple put a quad core CPU in it and/or I would get twice the performance out of it.

.... and here I am still waiting but it's ok because my MBP is not slow by any means.

Agreed. I have a 2.33, and wont upgrade until at least two revs after the current unis, hopefully with a quad core and a decent (dual) GPU, standard with OSX 10.7 and a matte display.

I am really happy that I did not wait for the late 2008 or the new mid 2009 MacBook Pros and grabed a early 2008. The notebook runs stable with great performance. The only thing I will replace is the hard drive, because I need more space ;)

I would like to buy a new one in second half 2010, but if Apple continues their current product scheme, I will probably stick to my early 2008.

My sister just got a firewire less macbook 2-3 weeks ago. I still can't believe apple did that. Stupid!

Anyways, I have had my hands on that for awhile, showing her how to use a mac and what not and about the only thing I wish my mac had that the new ones had is a magnetic latch and the rigidity of the unibody construction.

If they would have left the two screen options, matte :) and glossy , and kept the sliver monochrome them with the new unibody construction they would have had a winner for me.

The black is not really working for me. The express card has never been used on my MBP. I was going to buy a card reader at some point but it would stick out and possibly get snagged and then damage my mac so, yeah. Lack of fw400 is no big deal since it is backward compatiable. Instead of 1 fw plugs, why not 2?

What's up with that sd card slot though? I mean, every pro body or semi-pro body uses cf cards. To me, that was stupid and a wasted of space. That is why I carry around a card reader. We have done w/o them on our mac's for this long, surely we will be fine now.

Is it me or does it seem like apple is slowly moving to USB more and more. It is almost at a scary rate. It really freaked me out when they did it with the macbook but when they keep adding all of these USB ports instead of firewire it makes me a little uneasy. That is one reason I have a Mac!

FIREWIRE FOREVER!!!

Although I love the look of the new unibodies, I prefer the options on our classic designs, such as removable battery, matte display, firewire 400 and 800, dvi output, better keyboard, express34 and of course the dedicated trackpad button.

Also although I have no experience opening a unibody, changing hardware components in our classic units is quite easy imo.

So I'm happy that I bought my classic SR notebook when I did. I also have the last blackbook made which I am happy with.

MBP Santa Rosa Rocks!

No doubt! my latest 2007 Santa Rosa, 2.6 Ghz, FW 400+800, Classic DVI port, 4 GB RAM, LED Screen 17'' and the sweetest grey keyboard just rocks!
Maybe matte is useful outdoors, but I rarely use it in that way, so my glossy screen looks more than great indoors ;)
As somebody said... with every update it comes better.
I would upgrade my HW when apple make a new one double fast and blueray inside the case... I hope apple goes back with the grey keyboard...

:apple::apple::apple: I just love my MBP Santa Rosa! :apple::apple::apple:

I think the only downside to the classic is that you can't upgrade the hard drive. Well, you can, but I mean user-replaceable. That is the one thing I like about the unibody. I only have a 120GB drive in mine, and I would really like to upgrade to a 320GB 7200RPM drive, but I dont want to shell out the money to have an AASP do the repair and I dont want to do it myself. Guess I will survive off my 2 external HDD's.

You can't upgrade the drive? I have a 2006 Gen 1 MBP and someone said I could upgrade it myself

MBP Classic was the last true MBP

^^^^ As far as I'm concerned, anyway..... I still can't believe the merging of the macbooks and macbook pro's. Hey the iphones have a metal case, why don't we call them macbook pro's too? Why don't we call everything a macbook pro while we're at it?

The macbook pro's of today are wattered down machines without the overarching emphasis or a pro level machine that the classic demonstrates though the firewire ports, matte screen, keyboard, and expresscard slot. The new ones have just become high end "mainstream" laptops.

They're upgradable but you do have to tear fairly far into the chassis to get to them. I've upgraded my C2D 2.33ghz classic twice since 2006 w/first a 250gb and then a 320gb drive. Between that and the 3gb ram it's remained pretty snappy.

All that said - I did just pull the trigger on a late '08 UMBP last week when the refurb prices dropped through the floor. Still has a replaceable battery on this one and with luck it'll net me better than my current 2hrs battery life.
