I have to say.. this thread has inspired me to start buying luxury watches. I think i'm in love with Tissot. I will be starting there. The only Rolex I would buy is the Milgauss but that's a couple years away from me

Two words: resale value. When you drop 20k on a Rolex... Good luck getting half of it back when you sell it.

Panerai watches hold value much better.

This is something I learned the hard way. I bought a Rolex gmt master 2, at around 12k with tax. When I sold it? Less than 5.

Lesson learned.

I'm a huge fan of Panerai watches. I wouldn't own one due to most of the straps being leather and even though you can buy a different strap they still don't look quite right with anything but leather! If you want one at a good price you might wanna check out this guy called The Watch Collector NY, I can get you his contact info if you are interested.

Personally I don't have anything too flashy. I have a Rolex Yachtmaster and Submariner, but I really only wear those on family occasions. When I go out I usually wear my Welder or Nixon, they are under 1k and have rubber straps so if they get wet or spilled on it won't ruin them. I am kind of looking at a Breitling Bentley 6.75 with the black face.

Availability, a lot of the Panerai models aren't easy to come by. High end watches that aren't in mass production sometimes even go up in value so people don't have to wait. Neither of my Rolexes will go up, but ones like the Presidential or Daytona that can have a lengthy wait period will go up in value.

Other schmucks who thinks it's worth something. It's the same rules for pretty much anything in life. If someone thinks it's worth something, they'll pay you for it.

Me, I'm a watch nut but have never been a fan of Panerais. It's like they were all whacked with the ugly stick. I've seen them at their shop in Florence and it was just "eh."
