It might be neither apple nor google but some other unknown companies.

But I HOPE it will be apple:p

Google's problem is fragmentation:

And how is that any different than the fragmentation that is occurring with iphones?

2g/3g - 128mb ram, 620mhz arm cpu, powerVR MBX lite - 480x320

3gs - 256 mb ram, 833mhz arm cortex8, powerVR sgx535 - 480x320

i4 - 512 mb ram, ~800mhz A4 - 960x640

Google's problem is fragmentation.
I agree. Android is a young OS, one that is indeed fragmented. Yet that said, I believe we will witness a reduction of fragmentation as the major handset makers settle into their own space within the marketplace. Because of rapid public acceptance Android is being compared to the others. It's human nature. Give them time, an opportunity to organize the open handset alliance, and we may very well see a level of cohesiveness not present right now.

Android is the windows of smart phone os's. Smart phone's are still an imature market. There are some heavy hitters in it for the long run. Don't expect Nokia, Seimens, and others to just close thier doors. They are going to keep taking a crack at it, and it would be niave to say Apple has the corner on all good ideas. There's alot of sharp people out there, and most of them don't work for Apple.

Google is and has always been a marketing research and analytics company, NOT a software (or hardware) company. Every piece of software they create and give away for "free" really only has one purpose... to collect data and track trends across consumers. Since their interests may not always line up with creating a 'better' product, it will only take a few dud products to put them out of favor of the public.

As long as Apple continues to be a company with a more traditional model of creating products that succeed or fail based on the simple merits of their reception, they will always have the fundamental advantage.

the fact that google andriod brings out like 10+ phones a year and yet still to beat the iphone 3g let alone the iphone 4 says alot.

the only reason poeple have the andriod phones is because of the price tag that comes with the iphone and they are cheap :p,,,,,, FACT, they only in denile!

Are you kidding me? Apple is doing extremely well right now, and have had periods of great success throughout the years, and I'm sure more to come but come on? Google RUNS ****.

Apple. I just saw an employee at In'n'Out taking orders with an iPad. I see lots of people with iPhones. I see 8/9 computers in my college english class that are Macs. I see one geek with an Android phone but I know for a fact he's on the priority list for an iPhone 4. Oh wait, the last one is me! :D

Companies are rushing to integrate iPhones and iPads into their businesses. Google just can't compete with Apple. The iPhone 4 sold over 1.5 million units the first day. I haven't seen one Android device (not just phone) sell that many in a year except the Motorola Droid (1 million first weekend). Google doesn't have much consumer technology besides Android. Apple on the other hand has Macs, iPods, iPhones, iPads and iTunes. Google can try (but failed) competing with Apple in just the iPhone category. Google doesn't have any computers (hardware and software), music players, music stores, tablets, etc.

Most Android fanboys won't rave about the cheaper Android phones only the high-end ones like the four Samsung Galaxy S phones, the three Droids, Evo 4G, etc. It's similar to the Mac vs PC debate. PCs are cheaper but most have lesser hardware, cheaper components, lack of a feature or component, etc. But when you pit the best Android device (Evo 4G?) against the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4 wins in sales and function (225K+ apps).

It's alittle early to call the fight guys. 10 years ago Motorola owned the cell phone market.

I own an iPad and love it and I'm still not sure it's the future of buisness computing.

At this point who knows? I don't think it's going to be just one company who dominates i think both apple and google will dominate a sector of the market but i don't think that Google will ever fully overtake Apple.

The one thing apple has is a whole entire experience because the OS and the hardware are tightly integrated. Android is somewhat like microsoft where it doesn't have that tight integration and so if the hardware is bad it will reflect badly on the OEM and not so much on android.

Android still hasn't impressed the enterprise market where iOS has. What google needs to do is what MS did with WP7 and have uniform hardware requirements across the board for it's devices. They also need to clean up the android market because it is a mess and yes i know there are crappy apps in the App store as well.

But total freedom for the android market is going to eventually lead to issues. They need to police the market a little bit more and weed out the crap from the quality. But in the end i don't see iOS disapearing i think it's here to stay and Android market is most likely here to stay too.

Apple does not weed out the crap from the quality, I don't think thats the answer. Every platform will have good and bad apps. Google needs some UI experts to get in there and really jazz up the user experience. A common mistake by open source people is that the UI is not important, it's whats under the hood. Andriod might have a better OS (i don't know) but the UI is not elegant, and thats what draws people to the iPhone.

I'm so pumped about the imminent release of the Magic Trackpad.

If it's anything like the video I posted in the OP...

Then Apple is about to leapfrog Google yet again.

Apple will rule the future! Android has been out quite a while and is still unfit for daily usage! Every time I pick up my wifes new droid x I want to vomit on it because it's just as buggy, and lagging as her old g1 was. The iPhone 4 is smooth as silk and the build quality is outstanding! Every handset that has android on it is a cheap poorly designed piece of plastic.... just my 2 cents :)

Google, because they're trying to get their hands in every area of the user experience.

Apple is more interested in lifestyle branding, creating technology for practical use.

You clearly don't understand what fragmentation means.

All the iPhones use Arm architecture, the A4 is still an Cortex-8 it's just a more customized and power efficient one.

Comparing the graphics chips is like comparing computers graphics cards, the software doesn't care, it may run better on one than the other, but they still use the same code.

The resolution was specifically picked to AVOID fragmentation, as the iPhone 4 shares the same aspect ration and is simply doubled in resolution it can use simple 4:1 pixel mapping to scale the older programs with minimal resources, and likewise the software can be coded to use 1:4 pixel mapping on newer programs to give them functionality on the older phones.

There's a reason practically everything in the app store will run on every iPhone.

Android sets use completely different architectures and non standard resolutions and aspect ratios.

Apps is just one aspect of function, when you pit the iOS to android and also Google's cloud computing, google's function is vastly superior to iOS. And google is rapidly catching up in apps.

Another reason why Google will dominate Apple: Google gives a lot of latitude and encourages employees to do their own projects. Apple is dominated by Steve Jobs' ego. If Steve doesn't like it, it's GOT to go. Google represents freedom while Apple represents fascism. Freedom always wins out in the end.

That why Android looks and acts like it was designed by committee and iOS looks and acts like it was designed by a small team of like minded designers. If that's fascism, I'll take it any day over the popup/flyout/eye candy train wreck that is Android.

I mainly use 2 Google "products"...maps and search. Are those even products? I count them more as services, and they're free to me. From Apple I use a MacBook and a G5 at home, a MacPro at work, an iPhone, an iPod, in-ear headphones, an Apple TV, an Airport Extreme, an iPad in an Apple case, and to top it off, MobileMe.

I paid Apple a lot of money for those things. I haven't paid Google a dime. If Google closed tomorrow, I'd use Bing or Yahoo. If Apple closed tomorrow, my world would be turned upside down.

Apple has been around since the 70s. In that time, they've innovated and pushed the envelope countless times. Since the introduction of the iPod, they've become a household name for products, and are becoming more involved in service based ventures. I think they'll enter into even more services as time goes on.

Google has been around for a decade. In that time, they've made money selling ads. And more ads. I'm not sure why they're in the smart phone OS business. They don't seem very good at it. The reason Android is on so many phones is because it's there. Google had a wad of cash to play with from selling ads, and the phone manufacturers needed an answer to the iPhone. So Google made Android and made it open source, and the phone manufacturers, with nothing better to use, jumped on board. Going with Android is a lot faster and easier than developing your own smartphone OS. That doesn't mean Android is good, it means it was there at the right time and place.

But Google is still best at creating services that host ads. They don't seem interested in hardware. No one cares about their desktop OS. They're like a 20 year old kid who inherited a ton of money. They don't really know what they want, but they're so loaded, they can afford to try it all.

That could all change of course, especially if they keep selling so many ads that they can eventually buy Apple. Until then, I think it's pretty clear who's in a better position to control the future of technology here.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Do you really want the list of android devices? Maybe too many to remember!

Google are not even a player in the field of technology. They have an antiquated search engine that continues to be successful due to inertia and lack of decent competition, and that's about it. Otherwise they are simply an ad agency.

In the realm of technology, they are pretty much clueless.
Even Microsoft is far above Google in this area.
