oh, and a british national team.
That'll never happen – we've four separate Football Associations and years of politics standing in the way of such a move.

There's as much chance of it happening – with the possible exception of a one off for the 2012 Olympics – as Spain and Portugal deciding to field a combined Iberian Peninsula team. In which case, Mourinho would probably want to manage that instead. :p

i know there is little chance for it to happen (and it was just a little tease from the other thread), but if you put away your regionalisms, you would have a better chance to win the WC. Not to mention that it would be reasonable and fair to other countries.

It is nothing like Spain and Portugal. Those are two completely different Countries, like talking about UK and US going together.
In a way, Spain ALREADY does that, since you don't see separate Catalonian or Basque teams (which have arguably a deeper "independent" identity than, say, wales), like you don't have a Bavarian, Flemish, Sicilian team.

No, it wouldn't be like having Catalonian or Basque teams as these are regions of Spain. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are countries, but yet so is the UK, it's all very confusing :)

To quote an article I once read

"Our geo-political construction is a bit of a botch job really. Try explaining it to a foreigner...
Yes, England is a country but no, England isn't the UK but yes, UK is a country as well, but it's a country made up of...well...four countries. No, they're not states. No, none of the countries are independent like proper countries but they are sort of, a bit, occasionally, sometimes. But not totally. They all speak English, even the ones who aren't English. They all have different national anthems but not when they compete as Britain when they have England's anthem. Yes, Britain is a country too, it's the same as the UK but Northern Ireland, well that's a province, I think. But we call it a country and often define it separately from Great Britain but it's not separate from the UK and its not part of Ireland, only of course it is, sort of. Oh bugger it, let's go and get beer. "

I do disagree with one thing in the above quote though. 'God Save the Queen' is the British national anthem, not the English national anthem, England doesn't have an official national anthem, but unofficially it is 'Land of Hope and Glory'

Speaking purely hypothetically here, in the event of a big 'let's merge the home nations together into a British team' scenario what would happen to Norn Iron, what with them being part of the UK but not part of Britain? I suppose they could decide among themselves whether they join up with the British national team or merge together with the Republic of Ireland. And we all know how well that sort of debate works out...

There would also be a big debate about the team colours – to keep everyone happy we'd probably have to go for white, blue, red and green stripes, meaning we'd end up looking like Carlisle United's third kit. :D ;)

I fail to see a problem. I own this mighty fine specimen, so I do.

Modeled so perfectly here by ROI international Peter Murphy.

Oi, stop merging our team - we're doing ok at the minute, what with (there's only one) David Healy scoring some goals. Not quite the glory days of '82 but at least we're getting the occasional result. Oh, and we beat England a while back which was about as sweet as it gets :)

And you have a top notch goalkeeper :)

:D hehe, sure sure you're countries all right ;)

you can call them as you please, and i respect the value of autonomous 'nations', but scotland, wales, england and northern ireland ARE different semi-autonomous regions of a single sovereign state, just like , o different extents, Catalonia, Texas and Flanders.

i use the term 'country' in the (semi)universally accepted mean of 'independent, sovereign state'.
thus the United Kingdom is a country, Australia is a country, Canada is a country, Scotland is NOT a Country. has not been for 300 years if I remember correctly.

Hull City's Stuart Elliott plays (occasionally) for Norn Iron, so your guys are okay with me. ;)

We were in a pub watching Northern Ireland-England a couple of seasons back, prior to going to see City that day, and it was quite amusing the reaction Elliott got. Naturally everyone was cheering England on and slagging off the Northern Ireland players, but the biggest cheers came whenever Elliott got the ball and the whole pub was willing him forward. :D

Permission to change the thread title to something like 'Next England Football Manager'?

Or should it be 'Next England Football Manager: Poor Sod'?
