Running fine on my 3G with multitasking and backgrounds enabled. Still can't get Safari to work, but I restored from a backup and I think that's why. Battery life seems to last quite a bit longer for some reason. SMS works fine.

Yeah, that's how it's supposed to be. It 'separates' the home page background to reveal the folder underneath, which has the dark background.

Yeah- I don't mean the default "bubbles" wallpaper. Every pic I have seem of an open folder has had a rubbery bubble/bump pattern.

Somethings up with my phone then, just it lags bad.

I just rebooted it hard way and it seems to be more snappy.

When i got memory sweep just to check how much free ram it said like 5mb... Thats way too low.

Any ideas whats going on here?

I nabbed a copy of the iOS4 GM but it won't let me upgrade, says my device is not eligible for the requested build. Is there a workaround?

You need itunes 9.2 Beta

I have Multitasking and backgrounds on with my 3G with iOS 4.0, can't say it is any slower. Will have to see when apps are actually multitasking as right now none support it.

can anyone get find my iphone to work? mine's saying it isn't registered with mobilme, but my account is signed into the phone.

Mine stopped showing up in the device list on me.com too. Bummer.

Installed the iOS 4 GM seed clean on my 3G in DFU mode. Set up as a new phone w/ no apps installed. Runs like a slug but my 3G S usage (my gf has a 3G S) is corrupting my perception of the 3G's snappiness. :) Installed the GM seed on her 3G S as well and it's snappy as hell there. Very smooth.

Killed my 3G battery after 3 hours of usage, 6 hours standby (no talk time, all data), not doing much but reading MR in Safari. Oh, and Safari crashed when rendering one MR thread about iPhone4's camera. Guess it had some pix in it that were too big.

There's also a bug with Exchange. I can't seem to select mailboxes to sync other than Inbox. Ah well, it is a beta afterall!

Cupertino really wants us 3G (and 2G)!) owners to upgrade. The relative sluggishness of the 3G, plus the severely gimped feature set (i.e. no multitasking, w/o a JB anyway) is more than enough motivation to do so!

Honestly, given how much time I spend using my iPhone each day, I'm fine with the forced upgrade :)

I've noticed that iOS4 is a battery-killer on my 3GS.

Same here. Completely love it otherwise though. Very smooth, even the pinching and zooming in safari. Makes me want to play with it like i did the very first iphone just to see the effect again!

Working on my 3GS! Very nice so far.

Quick question on multitasking. I know Pandora and other apps have to be written to take advantage of the multitasking API's for background processes. However do apps need to be rewritten to do the fast user switching? I tried Fieldrunners and a few other games but when I leave the game and then go back (by double tapping the home button) the games relaunch.

Everything needs to be rewritten if it wants to do any sort of the new multitasking.

So am i the only one that is noticing lag/slugishness in the SMS app? Thsi is for a 3G not 3GS

No you are not the only one. I have noticed it too. The thing is, it is not even subtle. It is VERY laggy in Messages. I don't really understand why! When I press the send button, the button stays lit up, the progress bar up top does nothing and then after like 3 seconds the progress bar jumps. It is like the app completely freezes for a second!

Very annoying! Otherwise everything else works perfectly!

Actually mine seemed to have gotten better, what i did was under settings - general - home button - Spotlight unchecked all those search criteria.

Then i did a hard reboot on it (pwr button + home button)

Seemed to have fixed it runs a bit better now, im thinking of maybe even trying the restore again only this time setting it up as a new phone

If I upgrade to the iOS 4.0 GM can I downgrade back to 3.1.3? Also, when the real 4.0 comes out, will I be able to upgrade to that with no problem?

I'm not sure about your first question, but in regards to your second question, the answer is yes.

Just hit update or restore (whichever you prefer) and you should be good to go.
