Simple answer. In Western countries people want 4.7. In Asia people want 5.5.

Moto x is perfect size. Hopefully iphone 6 is around the same size.

Because they are saving that for the iPhone 7. Don't you know how Apple operates by now? they update little by little and squeeze as much money as possible from customers before giving them a minimal update.

I was also impressed with the size of the LG G2 with it being a 5.2" screen and all

Give me a Nano size in my pocket, iPhone 5S size in my hands and iPad Air to my eyes in one package that weighs 28 grams, gets over 24 hours video playback time and recharges in 10 minutes.:D

4'' is perfect IMO. I used a 4.8'' GS3 for almost 2 years and can safely say I like the 4'' better. I'm 6'2'' and have largeish hands too. 4.8'' does not fit into my hand securely. I fell like I'm going to drop it.

Bookmarked. Let's see if you will stick to your "4" is the perfect size" comment when Apple releases the bigger phone. This is like the - 3.5" is the prefect size because Steve Jobs told me so - moment all over again.

I don't understand why people can be against bigger phones and more choice for the user. Just because Apple releases a larger phone doesn't mean they will stop selling the 4" model. It doesn't have to be that way and it won't be that way. People will be able to choose whatever size they are comfortable with.

I'm comfortable with 4''. 4.8'' is too large. Only way I'd buy a 4.7'' iPhone is if it's the smallest flagship on the market.

If you want a large 5"+ screen I'm sure you know they exist. Not everyone wants a HUGE screen as a phone.

My current iphone size is perfect and doesn't need to be the size of my ipad that also is the perfect size, and my ipad doesn't need to be the size of my imac that also is the perfect size.

So you don't want people to have a choice of a bigger phone because YOU are happy with the current line up of devices? Wow...I am just shaking my head here.

Nobody is taking away your choice of a smaller device. Stop trying to tell other people what they don't need just because you don't need it.

Because not everybody in the market wants a 5" screen. If you want a massive phone the 5.5" will be fine for you.

5.5 is too big for me and 4.7 seems a tad bit too small for what I want. A 5" phone would be perfect for me, especially considering there are many 5" phones on the market that are not that much bigger than the iPhone 5S.

Basically Touch iD and the home button have crapped us over.

3.5" screen was great. Apple just needed to wrap a smaller phone around it. That would be my ideal.

I'm curious to try a larger phone, though. I imagine running into portability issues, but we'll see.

What is the point of *****footing around with 4.7", 4.8" etc.? Why doesn't Apple just go with 5", which seems to be the new standard, and be done with it? It will continue to seem like Apple is playing catchup.

Women have smaller hands.
2 sizes for 2 different markets.
I would keep a 4" model in the lineup for those who have short fingers or a basic usage of their smartphone, 5" is minimum now for what is standard usage...

Agreed. Before smartphones, phones fit in pockets better and continued getting smaller. Now they are getting larger again. I think a thinner 3.5" iPhone with reduced bezels would be best.

Why 4.7" for the iPhone 6? Why not just do 5" and be done with it?

Why 7.9" for the iPad mini? Why not just do 8" and be done with it?

Why 9.7" for the iPad? Why not just do 10" and be done with it?

Why 11.6" for the Macbook? Why not just do 11" and be done with it?

Why 13.3" for the Macbook? Why not just do 13" and be done with it?

Why 15.4" for the Macbook? Why not just do 15" and be done with it?

Why a precise number? Why not just approximate and be done with it?

Wow! Are you for real ? I never said any of the above  now i'm shaking my head...............I actually said people have plenty of choices for screens over 5" so again..........go for it if you please, thats what I originally said, do I have to say it again ??? go for it and be happy. So, anyone that wants a phone with the current form factor of the iPhone 4/5 should forget about it and follow others that carry fablets ?

If you read the first post by the OP you will see the person said just make an iPhone with a 5" screen and be done with it NOT ME!

I hope Apple decides to continue with a small size iphone and HOPEFULLY they do include large iphones as well.......very simple really

The bold part is merely you opinion rather than a confirmed 'standard' within the market.

There is still a certain percentage of the market that are using either smaller Android/WP8 devices or iPhone users that have had no choice other than to use the current 4" screen. Unless we attempt to gage an overall opinion from this sector whether or not they would prefer a larger screen, we can not say with any certainty if a 5" screen is the desired norm at all. I'm a man and am very happy with the current size so I full into the category mentioned.

I was not referring to my usage but standard usage which includes pretty much everything on top of phoning.
GPS usage, reading, writing emails, editing, creating, screening working documents, managing conf call and other pro usages... All of these are made easier with a larger screen!
True that my 30+ sample is in a pro only environment. So far I did not find any phone that fits my requirements...

I don't doubt some tasks are easier with a larger screen, I just disagreed with the notion a 5" screen is the desired standard because there are too many variables. It may differ from country to country and in different industries, and here in the UK the blackberry and iPhone are amongst the most popular phones amongst professionals 'in my experience'. Everything you listed I do daily on an iPhone and many companies use similar due to cost and security. I see more 4" devices daily than I do larger models and again this may be a regional thing.

I also disagreed with your statement about 4" screens being okay for 'those who have short fingers or a basic usage of their smartphone' because that is false isn't it? It goes far too close to the silly notion that people who buy iPhones do so because they are more basic and are for people who are not power users. Again that is total tripe. At this moment in time the market is flooded with devices of all screen sizes and we can't say for sure what the 'standard' is. What is standard for one person is often different for another :)

This has never been a case of 'catchup'. Apple can easily make a much huger device; they make freakin' iPads for crying out loud. The reason they don't make mousepad-sized phones isn't due to any technical challenge (indeed, the larger you allow the device to be, the /easier/ it is to make), it's due to ergonomics, single-hand use considerations, and portability.

I would like to see (or would have) a 3.5" iPhone along with a larger one. Now it appears there will just be huge phones and no smaller options. I wonder if there will ever be a turn again to smaller phones. I enjoy the larger phone? (tablet thing) I have yet I also miss the 4S because it was the right size in many ways.

I agree with you, Xiroteus. The 4S seemed like the perfect size.

I prefer to use a smartphone only when I have to and a tablet for everything else.

Sadly, based on Apple's iPad sales, I appear to be in the minority on this.

Perhaps Apple will start selling the iPhone 4S off contract for $350 and keep it around for MVNO's who can't offer 4G data.

I recently switched from an iPhone to an HTC One M8 and while I hated big displays, I appreciate now the bigger screen. Having said that, there are some things to consider:
* The M8 is not easy to use with one hand
* iOS more than makes for the smaller screen. Consider reading mode in Safari for example. You don't have that in Chrome on Android.
* Using bigger fonts on Android devices results in having more or less the same usable area, compared to an iPhone. iOS makes much better usage of space.
* Games and Movies look much better on big displays. I enjoy my M8 a lot more than my iPhone 5S
* It's much easier to hold an iPhone or carry it with you.

I believe that the best size for a mobile phone is 4,7"

I like my M8 a lot but sometimes I wish it was a bit smaller.

A few years from now there shall be a movement to bring back a set of smaller smartphones! I do believe there is room for both even though it seems to be going the way of 4.5" or larger.

When u own the game, you never have to play catch up!

Own the game? Apple or iPhone or both?? Doubt it both ways.

And yes, it is catchup. Years late. SJ was great, but I expect his decree that 3.5 was optimal was a mistake. It isnt optimal, as smartphones do much more now than before, 3.5 is too small. 4" is too small especially as its just a stretched one way 3.5" The larger sizes will bring many back from Android. On various threads so often posters state they had no choice to shift the phone to Android due to screen size. My only concern is will tghese larger screens have weird, thin profiles?

----------

Because 5" is gigantic. 4.7" is already pushing it.

Its gigantic compared to a 3.5. But there is a range of sizes that for 90% of users, that will become clear, probably 4.4 to 5.4. Some favour portability so will put with with a small screen for reading, video, etc. Others will favour bigger screen and put up with less portability.

No one is right, no one is wrong, bit tiring to read so many "facts" as to what is best, that is incorrect
