The design of that new operating system is ugly, plain and simple. At least now we know Jony Ives strengths as well as his weakness.

Im using iOS 7 right now and its just as smooth and beautiful as ever. Now it has extra function. I never liked laggy android and never will. I would rather use a dumb phone than android.

You've clearly not used Android recently.

I guess the hate is because there wasn't much that was new - it was mostly catch-up to Android. I honestly can't believe you guys didn't get a Swype-esque keyboard - that sucks.

I respect your opinion, I just guess polish for me can only make up so much for usability. And iOS has a really antiquated way of making things that should be easy to do far more tedious than they have to be. I dont think this UI refresh is going to be fully polished until at least iOS 8, so while Android and WP8 are tweaking what already are solid foundations Apple may have to be playing catch up again.

THIS, I do understand. Let's hope most of the shortcomings get straightened out by the GM version...

It doesn't even look like it's retina at this point. I mean the color scheme looks unreal. They shouldn't have gone with pastel but instead something crisp.

I don't dislike the new features. I dislike the ugliness. The OS looks like ****... It seriously does. Flat could have been done so much better. If they got rid of the plain white and the ugly neon colors, it would look better.

I think the hate comes from the fact that Apple blatantly ripped off Android, Windows Phone, and WebOS (Those multitask cards are like a complete ripoff). I guess Matias Duarte secretly worked for Apple this past year :D

I never use mutli tasking so it beats me why Apple ever brought it in.

I have used android plenty and just returned an at&t s4. It was laggy and was filled with useless features. With all its horsepower it should be butter. Plus its made from the same plastic that my kids toys come in.

And the red dot for the camera is absolutely hideous. Yes, Webos had more polish. This is embarrassing.

However, it does fit with the cheap plastic iPhones they rumored about, which I can only assume are true.

I haven't seen apple make anything cheap or plastic for years. I think your in the wrong forums. You should visit android.com thats where all the cheap plastic is at.

Apple no longer want to innovate or reinvent but copy Android, release cheap devices in the hope people will go for Apple.

I personally really like the design. There are DEFINITELY aspects of it that needs ironing out but Im not judging on that till the GM is released.
My brother has the S4 btw so I've used the S4 too... That makes the S4, S3 AND the galaxy nexus.
I still believe the public release will be spot on and that Android and iOS will reach an equilibrium point and NOT dominate the other because some people want the simplicity, elegance and ecosystem with iOS and some want the customisation, etc of Android.

People don't go to Android for the OS most likely other reasons.

People do go to Apple for the OS though.

People will avoid IOS now after this rainbow of colour today.

I think that's all anyone who's a fan of Apple can hope for. Hopefully they read all the criticisms they're receiving and find a way to at least fix some of the issues before release. The direction Apple is going is one they had to take, but I think Jony might have been a little bit over his head with the design.

No chance it's here to stay.

Apple are too arrogant to change it back.

Plus how do you change something when they have took it in another direction? Only way is to switch platform I'm afraid.

And on that I will have to agree. They've gone this far, Apple is just going to have to live with the consequences and hope the brand is enough to keep people on the ship. I think in time the design can work, but with their release schedules I don't know how they'll be able to keep momentum a year and a half from now when Android is moving at such a rapid pace and Windows Phone is slowly getting more exposure.

I love the functionality and amazing ecosystem. Anything else is a step backwards. Unless you walk around bumping phones and waving your hand exactly 1/3 of an inch over your plastic phone then its the best os out.

Wow that looks wonderful!

I hate to say goodbye to this OS but I cannot use that new operating system they have, it's not even professional looking.

I am rarely on this discussion board, and I write this not from the perspective of a techie but a regular user of Apple products and my 4s.

I definitely don't feel the "magic" with this release. I just watched the promo video on apple's website to learn about the changes for the first time (without following the WWDC speech or reading the reactions since I worked all day).

My mood began with interest and excitement and slowly turned into disappointment and then sadness because I know deep down that the Apple era as we have known it for the last 10 years has ended. iOS was already simple. And beautiful. It did need changes but now we have simple, boring and unimaginative. Apple is now entering a phase of decline. I will be following Android news more closely now to weigh options for my next phone.

I hate to be the downer here on announcement day but it's time to smell the roses and search for the next generation innovator.

It's like the Samsung ads making fun of iphone users being old got to their heads and they went the complete opposite direction. I got a good laugh at some comments saying "iOS 7: designed by Lisa Frank".

I'm using the beta... first impressions:

I like the new lock screen and swipe up for settings. Everything looks quite android-ish but with brighter colors.

The new Siri screen is neat, it does remind me of something from android, I can't remember exactly what though...

It just feels really android-ish overall, glad I spend most of my time in apps. Messaging looks so blah now, it's like too flat without contrast.

The app switcher thing is cute but really the icons from iOS 6 were fine for me, it's like not I'mg going to read info off a card, I just hit it and go to the app.

The icons look a little more blown up and not as sharp.

The tilt thing seems a little useless.

I don't like how the search screen is gone. I really got used to that.

The panoramas set in the photos app is neat, but I really dislike all the photos on a white background for some reason.

I like the idea of it all but it feels so much like Android, like ICS, with all the thin lines and everything. Though even the beta feels sleek. I guess that little bit of definition and depth of previous versions of iOS just appealed to me. It made the device seem like it had layers if that makes sense, this kind of feels like it's just all on the surface to me.

I'm not sure of the exact name of it but the zoom from app to icon on the home screen was def the feature of some android launcher from years past.

To me, it's much more 'toy-ish' than 'magical'

edit: and one more thing that kind of sucks.. if you have a real picture as a background and not some graphic thing, the app icon text might as well not be there, it's just not big enough to read against a background with hard lines and colors (like a photo..)
