I'm going to have to say that the people who choose android do so because its easier to customize than the iPhone, Jailbreaks for iPhone take a bit to come out.

My biggest thing i think on for hate on the iPhone would be that Android users or anyone else is just trying to justify why they don't own an iPhone. They don't want something that everyone else has.

I think its as simple as that. Oh and the fact that they think a 3.5" screen is WAYYYY to small to use.

These opinions brought to you by AlphaVictor87 :p

Engadget gathers a lot of Apple-haters because Engadget absolutely loves Apple. Yes, they post a lot more about other tech on a regular day. But throw an Apple event at them and every post for days will be about Apple. They even give you a special link so you can view the site, excluding all the Apple content if you want.

I love Engadget, but sometimes their Apple love affair can get a little crazy.

As for the phone, I can see why a lot of people hate it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and thats perfectly fine. And in today's world, those people who choose to can voice their opinions in hopes that someone on the planet will read them. Thats perfectly fine. As for me, a former Apple-hater myself, I love my iPhone. It does that simple thing that a TON of other phones fail to do: work.

Besides the underdog/contrarian aspect, some people focus on specs and ability to customize (where Apple may have a disadvantage), others focus on the overall experience.

Agreed. Funny thing is those specs they drool over are vastly overrated when it comes to real world usage. I had both the Galaxy S2 and the Note the same time I had my 4s and I ran dozens of tests with them. The iPhone was just as fast, if not faster, than either of the Androids despite having inferior specs. The iPhone and ios handle things differently and more efficiently, that's why it doesn't need a ton of processing power. The ability to customize argument is moot because an iPhone with a jailbreak can do just about anything a rooted Android can do.

Android apps are written in java, what do you expect? :p

Because some of those ragging on iPhone are Linux users who I find in general a lot are against Apple on principle of the matter (they do not like the closed eco system and have moral objections to it). And they'd really like to see everyone else boycott Apple as well.

Also, backlash I guess against obnoxious mac/iphone fans (at least they claim but I rarely see these horrible posts that are so obnoxious. Granted I don't read as many android posts but honestly, it seems the anti apple posts on apple stories are a lot more prevalent than the smug apple posts on android stories).

Because some genuinely hate the iphone and really can't understand why it's so popular (I have been there with other products where I really can't understand why it's gotten so good). Especially if the popularity of the product threatens to make it so the product(s) you want will disappear... that will really get the hate going (Because add fear there about the threat of the popularity getting rid of what they want). Hell, I'll admit this is why I hate on phones with large screens getting so popular (especially the Note). Because I fear that's what the cellphone companies will chase and those of us who don't want humungous screens will be left with none or with just the crappy phones for people who just want a phone and not much more.

Because some are just trolling for the lols.

I'm sure I'm missing some reasons.

Apple and the iPhone are like McDonald's and the Big Mac, sure both are very successful, and are very popular with the highest sales, but I prefer a low selling and better quality gourmet burger ( Galaxy Nexus ) you can have you're iBig Mac

I have an Android phone, and I'm not bothered or feel the urge to hate on an iPhone when I see it. I kinda like using it, even if I prefer my Galaxy for the tasks I do everyday. Some people are just childish and have to prove that whatever they don't use is crap.

Why do these people hate apple so much?

For the same reason some people on this forum hate Android. Both groups have some sort of inferiority complex that makes them think that having the iPhone makes them a better person than someone who owns an Android phone, and vice versa.

My comment isn't directed at you, Taedouni, per se, but I just wanted to address the implication of this sort of comment in general:

The implication that the iPhone is something difficult to get is absurd. Realize that there are Android handsets out there that are more expensive than an iPhone. If someone can afford a $299 Android device (there are a few at that price point) or a $199 Android device, then they can afford an iPhone. Even if people's budget only allows them to get more entry-level devices ($0 or $99) there are iPhone options in that range too.

I understand the reputation and branding of the iPhone; it's pretty much considered the "luxury" brand of smartphones, but the implication that it's hard to get is really absurd.

Ditto.

Where did I mention that it is hard to get an iPhone ?
I simply said that some people tend to hate on things they don't have (use). People don't own both an android phone and an iPhone. They want to feel like they have the best product.

I'm going to have to say that the people who choose android do so because its easier to customize than the iPhone, Jailbreaks for iPhone take a bit to come out.

Informed customers who purchase Android phones buy it for that reason or out of a distaste for Apple itself.

Working in retail (this is my last day, coincidentally), the majority of users buy Android because:

1. The phones are cheaper with subsidized plans and incentives (BOGO, etc)
2. Because store employees recommend them* over the iPhone

*Retail employees are told to recommend them over the iPhone because the margins are better and they are often given model specific sales incentives in addition to their commission. Apple famously offers retailers small margins and no sales incentives.

Really...? Why do Yankees fans hate the Red Sox and vice versa? Why do people say you are either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan? Chocolate vs Vanilla?

People are competitive by nature, and take pride and connect personally with things that they are fans of. It becomes part of their identity, and they will defend it aggressively.

Two very good points, especially number 2.

It's not the phone people rag on, it's the smugness of the owners and their absolute worship of all things Apple and Steve.

Which is a problem in itself because that simply tarnishes all Apple users with the same brush. I'd wager a bet that the vast, vast majority of Apple users are not like this in the slightest. To get beyond this, the Apple users who are like this need to stop, and the people who imply that all Apple users are iSheep need to stop too.

I am open to the iPhone-next due out later this year, I do LOVE Android 4 ICS, I just prefer a larger screen, widgets, and the customization so easily allowed. If the iPhone-next has a bigger screen, and allows more jailbreak stuff done stock, I would switch back in a heartbeat.

Time will tell what Apple has in store for us, I have read that iOS6 is supposed to be a MAJOR upgrade, if so, and they make the screen 4"+ or larger I am on board

you are right on point with that. Every time i get ragged on for owning an iPhone they start thinking i love everything Apple.

Funny thing is i can't STAND to use a Mac, its just not my cup-o-tea. Also i don't sit there all day saying my iPhone is the end all be all of phones. I like my phone, but i don't go overboard, and honestly rarely talk about it unless there's a new update or i found a new app.

They don't own a Windows phone either, but you don't see the level of "hate" toward that platform.

Besides, as I said in my post, my comment wasn't necessarily directed at you.

Agreed.

I've always said that it's very easy to tell people who have genuinely given both platforms a chance. There's something a little more honest about their posts regarding the differences, and they tend to admit readily that both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses.

Intellectual honesty goes a long way. Pretending something is perfect when it's not actually does disservice to the item in question. Of course, many don't realize that.

I recently returned to the iPHone from a Nexus device, and I can tell you there's a lot more in common than there are differences (more specifically, common issues).

Because they are insecure about their decision of buying an Android over an iPhone and want to prove themselves they made the right choice.

They fear they will be judged based on their choice of phone for various reasons and need to rationalize their decision.

Those people generally tend to stick together as it's also good for their ego to feel the approval of others who have the same insecurity complex. I noticed a lot of them on Engadget and on Facebook (comments on tech blog posts).

There are people doing the same against Android for similar reasons, but I seems to me that there are far more people bashing the iPhone, probably in part because of its large presence in culture and media (people tend to hate more what's more popular).

The irony is that this insecure behavior makes me less likely to switch to Android as a lot of their users seem to be unadmittedly tempted by the iPhone judging by their hate.

The iPhone used to be a good device but in recent months, Android along with Android 4.0 ICS has surpassed the iPhone. The only thing going for the iPhone is the apps but once that field levels out the iPhone will just be a regular phone and Apple can't just sparsely upgrade anymore to sell millions.

ICS is awesome i have a transformer prime and i love it. Android has apps that are more useful and iOS has apps look and run better.

Some people hate on products because it justifies whatever they've purchased. You'll see Android users bashing iOS, and vice versa (insert any competing products and the situation is the same). However, I would say the majority of people just buy a phone and are happy with their purchase, without having to bash the competitor.

I don't know how anyone can say its about affordability since you can get the iPhone for free now.

Most of these tech sites have an apple bais so i understand why people hate apple.

Some..actually allot of people feel the need to be "cool", "special", "unique" and thus hate on mainstream items as a way of be "different"...they are unique alright! About as unique as a bent fork!
