hell I've never even seen a Galaxy Tab commercial or ad anywhere.

I've see WAY more tab ads than apple ads in the last few weeks....

Also, Apple doesn't give a damn about marketshare (except when they can use it as a bullet point in their keynotes), they make enormous profits, roughly half of the industry's. I love seeing people talk about android gaining marketshare as if its somehow significant, thats what happens when you throw an OS onto as many products as possible at tons of price ranges. Apple takes the big profits, and thats the goal, anyone that points to marketshare as the main goal just doesn't understand Apple.

Not quite. The higher price gives off the illusion that the product is in some way premium. That, coupled with the iDevices' history for having excellent build quality, completes the illusion. Unfortunately, what people aren't told is that iOS is quite a gimped OS. On a phone it's understandable but on a tablet, it's just stupidity. I can't do half the things my 'clunky' netbook could do. Hell, some cheap chinese tablet is more functional. No filesystem, no Flash, no proper multitasking, no widgets, etc etc.

So when people buy a non-Apple product it's because the product is superior and when people buy an Apple product it's because they're dupes who don't get what they are buying. Of course; I'm totally convinced; very well argued.

Cool, that's not what I said. Nice try, bub.

Apple cares about marketshare until they start losing. Then it's all about being an 'underdog.'

The only enduser reviewed Xoom articles are at Engadget. They review a game and a shopping app (and Google's 3D map view which doesn't count in my opinion because it'll also be on iOS eventually).

Apple doesn't have to be scared, because it knows how to monetize their tablet better than any other manufacturer.

When Motorola earnings reports start looking better, feel free to start another sensationalist thread like this.

Edit: on a side note, mKTank, I certainly respect your opinions and I think that it's refreshing to have a pro-Android user on this forum, but you must be a masochist to jump into a snake-pit of pro-Apple users here. I don't think any pro-Android sentiment will see much of the light of day here.. I'm not sure it should, since it's an Apple site after all.

Uh, no, because even when they lose marketshare they are still raking in a huge chunk of the entire industry's profits.

Its been the same story for over a decade now....

What? I agree with you 100%. The iPad is overpriced only to give the illusion of luxury; base price could be significantly lower. People are unfamiliar with the OS and are actively misled into the wrong purchase. This explains Apple's profits and sales. You've made great points.

I'm actually a WP7 user, but I definitely see the appeal behind Android and Honeycomb looks like it will run circles around iOS on iPad. I know that everything I'm saying here goes out the window, since these people made their minds, but at least putting my point out there might change somebody's mind somewhere.

Google had the opportunity to demonstrate a complete package for Honeycomb, just as Apple did when they introduced the iPad. Unfortunately they failed to take advantage of the opportunity.
I think you hit the nail on the head here.

Take a look at how long the iPad keynote is. They cover core apps. They cover productivity apps. They cover peripheral consumer apps. They bring developers in and have them show their creations. They cover pricing and data plans. They cover reasons why they built the device.

It's Apple making the argument for a complete tablet ecosystem and experience, not just the tablet itself.

Nothing close to this with the competition. Google always covers individual applications (like at their IO event), but they never:
1. Show the holistic, total device experience
2. Show how stuff will be used in real life (though they've started to pick up some cues from Apple recently).

And don't read me wrong: I'd love the competition to do this with all their devices, so we all know what these devices can do and compare them, instead of putting rumor against rumor.

You just don't get it. Apple cares about profitability, not marketshare. Guess what has happened as Android has had it's big marketshare growth since 2009? Apple has had record profits.

Apple could control 20% of the 2015 tablet marketshare and still make an absolute killing.

They do care about market share as they should. Market share dictates how much attention is given to every platform. What every developer looks for is how big of an audience there is on each platform. Most developers would probably go for the larger one. As of now, it's pretty equal, but as Android starts overtaking iOS, you'll see the Android Market start filling up faster than the App Store could keep up.

This is completely based on assumptions, obviously, but if Apple cared about its users, they'd give a crap about market share.

They only care about market share in so much as it affects their profit share. Incidentally, their profit share has only GROWN as Android has gotten more popular. So tell us again why Apple should be scared?

Actually, most developers would go for the market they can most monetize. Mac's market share is very small, but its developers keep up with OS X releases, and are able to tap into resources like MacUpdate, or the app store, and universalized update mechanism in Mac apps. The monetization picture for developers on Android isn't pretty. Sure, there are exceptions like Angry Birds, but this isn't the trend and Google's acknowledged that. Market share is another variable, but not the only one.

iOS also has _the_ most user friendly application development environment (it's bundled with everything you need to develop for the Mac, too). Have you played with Android's? Comparative mess..

LOL. You must be living in a fantasy world where the "mass market" thinks just like you.

iPad - 15 million sold to all types of regular folks
Galaxy Tab - 1 million sold (if that) to Apple hating tech nerds

Do you honestly think the Xoom will significantly change this ratio? Those same million tech nerds will buy a Xoom, and then what?

They will take them back, get on MacRumors iPad forum, and make post about how the next vaporware Android tablet will kick Apple's butt because the specs look good and iOS is a 'closed' system. (Oh, almost forgot, they will mention Flash, except the percentage of flash videos will be less).

Perhaps Ford should do as Apple does, and just make 1 car design and leave it at that.

Model T, available in any color you like, as long as it's black. :)

It's pretty obvious that Apple devices are generally more hyped. Apple's marketing is probably the best out there given what they convince people to buy sometimes. Samsung was never known for their advertising..hell I've never even seen a Galaxy Tab commercial or ad anywhere.

The Tab was running a phone OS. Let the XOOM show Apple how it's done, I suppose.

This same sense of security existed in 2009 when the iPhone was rising up to be a dominant star. Well, latest statistics sure wiped those grins off, didn't they?

Then why don't they hire some good marketing people? Run an add in the Quick Qurater. Wanted, good used car salesman to help us move some tablet inventory. Salary negotiable. 401k, health, dental, and eye care.

You do understand that people don't operate the way you think they do? You don't "change somebody's mind" by pointing out random factors. People make their decisions on products. WHEN Xoom and Playbook and whatever else promises to be the next great thing are actually released with a full implementation of Honeycomb and we can see what the next iPad offers then people can decide what works best for their needs.

Wonder how hard it would be to get the kind of advertising the iPad had though. I mean seriously, the amount of publicity it had was downright ridiculous. iPad was on sides of buses, news channels, commercials, at walmart, best buy, target, ATT store, billboards, college campuses, classrooms. You name it. I haven't seen advertisements like that since Halo 3.

I wish it worked like that, but it doesn't. People here will always think Apple is best regardless of whether there's something better out there or not. Some of them, anyway. I still have hope that at least some people here have the ability to think rationally.

You say "best" like it's an objective standard. For some "best" might be a device that plays Flash, for others it may be a device that functions well as an e-reader, media viewer and email device. For others still, it's all about gaming. So it's ridiculous to say that everyone should get the same device purely because it meets your definition of "best."

The iPad got my attention first and it does pretty much everything I expect from a tablet. It may be that the new generation of devices may offer more for me. It's certainly possible. But I'm not about to be sold on the superiority of a device that hasn't hit the marketplace yet.

I find your posts quite amusing ... none of these tablets have proven anything yet.

If and when ... (I use the term if lightly) the other tablets actually start proving to be somewhat worthy ... Apple will release their next offerings and we shall see how well these other wanna be tablets fare.

I was actually thinking about phones in my post.

Classy comment! ... how many threads are you trying to flame?

Funny how people get a free Android and they are convinced it is the best smartphone ever.
I like how you assume that if not iOS, then Android. Are you really that insecure? I don't have an Android phone, nor do I have an Android tablet. Like I said, I have an iPad actually, so I'm not just posting out of my ass. I'm posting out of experience with this iPad and how it has had many shortcomings despite me paying half a thousand dollars for it. I could have gotten some VAIO or something from somewhere that's a million times more functional, but nope.

You have to learn to accept that Apple isn't perfect. The iPad might be nice and magical and revolutionary to you but it's pretty useless to a power user like me who does a little bit more than browse the web and check email. And the iPad can't even do the former properly. You should give the XOOM and Honeycomb a proper try instead of crapping all over it. It looks impressive as hell and if you can't see that, there's a problem with you.

Which part of Steve's presentation did you miss?

Also, I think a lot of people are trying to tell you that you yourself haven't tried a Xoom, so how can you call it "impressive as hell"?

I'm sure the Xoom is a compelling device, but until it manifests itself in user hands, and shows itself to be somewhat of a marketing phenomenon (unlike Windows based tablets), I'm not sure you have a point here.

You should have bought a Netbook with your 1/2 a grand
