All this tech jumbo talk. All I care about is a great photograph. Less noise in a darken shot. That's it

I didn't read much past the OP but f stop x isn't BETTER than f stop y. Its crazy how people add a "spec" to any and all numbers now. Manufactures don't even need to try anymore, they just add numbers if its higher than the competition because they know it will look good. Mhz, ghz, cores, bits, megapixels, PPI, etc etc it doesn't matter how many compromises needed to be made its a higher number therefore its better.

In the right environment with a phone (due to lack of adjustment they all have the "right environment") I'm blown away with how far we've come with smartphone cameras. I took a random picture for work the other day on my 6S and couldn't help from admire how well it turned out.

I'm to the point now where I find the pictures good enough and would only want an increase quality as long as they don't come with more space being used to store the photo. A slightly better photo isn't worth it too me if its 50mb.

Honestly, the iPhone and the Galaxy S7 have the best cameras on the market imo. Yes, the S7 camera beats the iPhone 6s camera overall, especially in terms of low light performance and focusing speed. It is like 6 months newer than the 6s which also plays into things. The 6s has better colour accuracy, and I personally prefer the video taken from it more.

From what's been reported, the new iPhone 7 camera(s) will be a nice improvement hopefully to the level or possibly surpassing the Galaxy S7 camera. I trust Apple as they reportedly have 800 people working on the camera alone and have never really let us down with the iPhone camera yet. I will say, I preferred the iPhone 6 camera over the 6s camera in low light probably because of the size of the pixels - 1.55 microns vs 1.22 microns but the 6s in more light takes a better photo.

If you ask me, we are lucky to have cameras as amazing as what we have in phones today, and they are constantly improving. If you are expecting DSLR quality then you set unrealistic expectations for the time being.

I look forward to seeing the shots the iPhone 7 can take.

Upload to a computer, run software of choice. If software has good noise reduction built in, good break for you. If not, buy 3rd party noise reduction plug in/standalone application for that application that does.

Even DSLR/Mirrorless shooters whip out noise reduction applications after the shoot. I love Nikon's hi iso abilities. Its actually their thing they are known for. But even at higher iso's you need to clean things up in post processing.

Do you have any suggestions on a decent 3rd party app for noise reduction that doesn't cost a lot?

that's the problem lol. these usually cost some money. Would have to search around.

If by chance you are on the adobe sub plan for lr/photoshop....nik tools (now called google nik tools, they bought the company a while ago) are now free. Swore by these in the past, its noise reducer was very good imo. Only stopped using when aperture was killed off a few years back. Not an adobe fan....but that's personal bias. I use DxO which costs more than a few dollars.

Did they ever fix the overdone noise reduction from the 6? I haven't kept up. If not, is there any hope for the 7? I would think with the addition of raw this will no longer be an issue for me.

Not going to lie, this was the most exciting part of the Keynote for me. I wasn't even considering updating but I love taking pictures with my phone and man, raw + the 7 Plus's camera will be a mean combination.

12MP is also 4 steps away from 16Mp and 9 away from 21MP. I'm not sure what your point is.

they want 1.4 I'd gather. Personally I am wondering why the oddball 1.9 and not usual standards of 1.8 or 2.0. But not pondering too hard on the matter.

But would be interesting as to how apple would implement an automode that would make most casual users happy at 1.4 though if we must get theortical.

Hey apple, why are my pics so blurry besides the person I shot.

Dear customer..below are articles on depth of field and bokeh, please enjoy the reading.

I have had fun seeing the looks of amazement from even DSLR shooters when I take their body off of automodes, put in aperture priority and say enjoy a new world of fun shooting. Trusted people I let take 1.4 glass I have for a spin if nikon shooters for a weekend even and not using.

I give them the basics, tell them to explore and experiment but to remember like with everything....too much of good thing can be bad lol. Not every shot needs a nuked out background.

But...but...higher numbers!

Sadly this sells. Punchline being even with pro bodies of today...the higher MP's has hit an issue. Some glass cannot provide the resolutions to use the MP's fully. Very few have redone "classic" lines optically. Zeiss would be one of the few I can say for sure has on new releases. And as many know....zeiss isn't cheap. And it doesn't autofocus besides some sony mirrorless options lol.
