The amazing part is that many jail breakers would be so easily satisfied with some BASIC features that Android has had for years now;

- quick reply options (BiteSMS)
- settings toggles (SBSettings)
- filesystem access (iFile)

But Apple just refuses to provide ...

Yeah, but it's a bitter pill to swallow having to give up the better app store, the third party accessories ecosystem, and media library / media handling that iOS has. The performance was an issue too, but ICS seems to have mostly closed that gap (on new hardware anyway).

Easier to jailbreak and get the features I want than go to Android. I can fix the things I find lacking in iOS, I can't fix the things I find lacking in Android.

Right now I have three main things
Toggles as a widget (wif, bluetooth, etc)
Intelliscreen X
Bite SMS

Admittedly there are some pay only apps that do not have trials that jailbreaking has given me the means to test out. I have saved a ton of money by being able to test some apps that ended up not working out for me and being deleted shortly after. If Apple just provided us with a way to get refunds on "bad" apps I wouldn't find this necessary at all.

Apple has certainly made jail-breaking less of a necessity over the years as they have incorporated more and more features. Still, there are some things that I find necessary that Apple doesn't provide.

I don;t think he is proposing you go Android. I think he is saying that with those features almost all iOS users would have all of their gripes handles.

But I don't have to charge my 4.5 inch phone three times before bed.

Apple seems to cater more towards your everyday user. Unfortunately

Whay do you guys (well, those of you who do) still jailbreak when iOs 5 is out? What things are you missing that weren't included in iOS5? Im thinking about jail breaking my iPhone, but i don't really see the point anymore, so please, convince me (if necessary?)

I do it for SBSettings, IntelliscreenX, TetherMe, Winterboard, and the system modifying I can do with iFile :) oh yeah, also Infinifolders and Infinidock ;)

EDIT: and BITESMS!!!!

I think system toggles and bite features are very much everyday user things. Though I see what you mean with iFile - very easy to screw things up.

for those that replied "installous" thanks, other morons of different kind thought of things like SOPA because of that...

Various cydia tweaks and of course installous.

Why jailbreak? Because the stock iOS 5 is missing the simplest of features... I mean, things that should be expected to be in a stock OS.

I jailbreak just for these:
  1. BiteSMS - QuickReply without leaving current application, open SMS app without automatically going to an unread message (sometimes I like to keep them unread as a reminder to reply later), contact photos in message list, new message icon in status bar.
  2. SBSettings - Quick access to toggles (Wi-Fi, 3G, etc), and hide app icons that will never be used (Stocks, Weather, etc)
  3. NoNewsIsGoodNews - Hide the stupid Newsstand icon that you can't get rid of otherwise.
  4. iPicMyContacts - Show pictures in the contact list.
I mean honestly, why are any of these features excluded from stock iOS? That's just dumb.

Anyway, I also used the 2-day trial for IntelliScreenX, which is really awesome, but I just can't bring myself to pay $10 for it.

Because I wanted to answer the question for myself, based on direct experience. At this point I'm not gaining a whole lot, as I don't have any need right now for tethering or anything out of the ordinary. Facetime over 3g is interesting (I don't use it much though), and I like dinking around with many of the customizations. Right now I'm digging lockinfo and callbar.
