This needed to be said. Most people don't care about OLED, and I mean average consumers. I asked my sister the other day if she thought the IPhones bezels were too big, and she said that she didn't know what bezels were! People are so out of touch. People I know actually like big bezels, because it gives the phone color. Many females also like big bezels because they like a white front. Again, so out of touch

They want people to go for the LCD model. That's why the x's price is so high. They need people to buy the 8, or they're going to lose a lot. Plenty of demand but not enough units.
The OLED model is more expensive because it's production costs, especially material costs and difficulties to manufacture are higher than the LCDs. The higher costs are compensated with the higher price to arrive to the targeted profits. There is nothing to do with Apple needing people to buy more LCD model. Apple does not need people to buy more OLED model or LCD model. People with excellent disposable income will buy it and OLED model with significant physical design change will attract many people and explode the demands. Apple iPhone fan base/ coalition is incredibly strong :)

People on these forums think apple wants everyone to buy the OLED phone. In a way they want the upper middle to buy, or anyone, if they can afford it. All I'm saying is that apple needs the LCD model to sell. Because most people will not look at the phone and see OLED. They will see an overpriced phone. And the LCD model needs to be good enough for people to see as a worthy upgrade.

Based on the current rumors, nothing about the 7S excites me in the slightest.
If you have a 7, probably not. Those of us that are on the 6 or lower see it as an upgrade. I don't think apple expects 6s or 7 owners to upgrade this cycle. This is targeting the remnants of the 6 super cycle.

I would get the iPhone 8 since it's bleeding edge w/ iOS. Could get more features on Android, but the cost will be less security and less optimization. Samsung has a balance between hardware and software, but their balance is more on the software feature side rather than on the core experience.

By why do Apple have to charge excessively high prices when Samsung don't need to charge such high prices for the same screen technology.

Apple's costs may be higher on things that are not in Samsung phone's for example the 3D facial recognition system, Apple are doing it differently (using 3D) it's much more advanced and that could cost more, add a few other things and the devices will cost more than the 7s and 7s Plus on top of that Apple will want to continue it's current profit margin.

Exactly. In my opinion, it's almost never worth upgrading after just 1 year. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are still outstanding phones with more power and features that most people ever use. I'm looking to upgrade because I'm coming from a 6. So even if I get one of the non-OLED models, that's a 3 generation upgrade in CPU/GPU, RAM, camera, and other features.

The note 8 has iris scanning and digitiser in the screen to allow the S-pen to work

But the 3D Touch in the iPhone OLED screen is said to cost more! Also like I said Apple like to keep their profit margins. We just don't know how much all of this technology costs and a lot of it is new to the X iPhone hence why it will cost more.

I have a 6+. I have zero desire to upgrade to a phone with the same case regardless of how much fancier the guts are. I want that smaller, bezelless design; I'm sure this feeling will only grow when I see the new phone. Unless the X turns out to be cheaper than the rumors indicate, I'm most likely going to hold out for another year. And, I wouldn't be surprised if the X is actually next year's phone early, and next year simplifies the line to just the X (rebranded simply "iPhone.") would make sense if the X is a one-off for the iPhone's tenth anniversary.

My Phone isn't actually three years old, though (it had to get fully replaced about a year ago) so I'm not in the position of having a terrible battery. But I wouldn't be surprised if the 8 sells a lot less because it just looks anemic next to the X.

The 5.8 is literally what I've been waiting for when the 6 came out. After about a month of having the 6 I thought to myself "man, I wish this was a little bit wider".

Smaller design (in a near 6s form factor) but with a full screen. I look at bezels now & think how dated they appear & how wasteful they are in terms of stealing the area of usable screen space.

This is quite genius of Samsung because it almost guarantees that the iPhone 8 will be sold in lower numbers due to availability and cost.

One thing I will say regarding the Note 8 or Galaxy S8, there are quite a few promotions for this phone that have some nice incentives. It defintely will attract potential buyers who are looking to save money and have one of the latest devices.

Yeah I've seen some great deals here too with extra goodies thrown in. I've never seen that with the iPhone, you just get the phone and have to pay more of an upfront cost for it on contract. Up until now I've been happy to pay £230 - £280 for the phone and have it on a £30p/m contract. Those days are gone it seems.

The only things keeping me with the iPhone is iMessage and the Apple Watch. If Android had a similar messaging service to iMessage it would probably push me to move if I'm honest. Then again with the way Apple are trying to divide its customer base by introducing a premium product and offer budget hardware at a premium price I'm starting to wonder if iOS really is worth the expense? Im not at all bothered by OLED if it drives the price up. If Apple are half heartedly delivering a 7S to try and force people to pay more for the 8, then those attractive deals Samsung are offering shows a little bit more respect to potential customers IMO.

Most of my friends who own iPhones use WhatsApp instead of iMessage, I wouldn't miss it. I also have no intention of owning a smartwatch of any type. However I'm still too tied to Apple's ecosystem to really consider moving away. I have 7 years worth of app purchases, and I'm used to iCloud syncing everything perfectly between my Macbook and phone for contacts, calendars, notes, etc. iOS is second nature to me.

I do wonder if the difference between the 7S/8 and the X is going to be as large as we thought, screen aside. If the 7S/8 really is a cynical rehash of the 7 with minimal new features I'd feel like I'd have to switch to Android, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

Incidentally, a friend of mine just ordered an S8 as he's sick of the cost of Apple products and services. The shipping was delayed for a couple of days unexpectedly, so they've thrown in their new VR headset for free.

Yeah I use whatsapp with friends and iMessage with family generally. Smart watches are not for everybody I agree. I don't buy apps I have to be honest, I've probably bought about 5 in my life as for my uses all the apps are free. I do feel the quality of the apps are better on iOS though, even ones from the same developers. I used to get the impression more effort was put into iOS versions because the sign off process was stricter. I could be wrong, just the impression I got.

All that aside though I'm entering a period where I'm watching most products shoot up in price and I'm not in the mood to give money away, especially to companies that put profits before service. Apple have only just started paying the correct amount of tax here in the UK yet feel the need to capitalise on Brexit by adding an additional tax to those loyal enough to buy their products. That I found quite insulting last September to be honest.

Most tech/IT has shot up in price. I keep saying it on here but Apple isn't doing business the way it used to, all of their products are steadily moving towards high-end only. Even graphic designers I know have passed on the Macbook Pros at their current price, I've had to help a couple spec PCs and help them move over to Win10.

That is what Apple should have done earlier, moving their products to high end customer base. Apple is a premium / luxury technology company with extraordinary resources and has an ability not to be dependent so much to lower end customer.

Apple products have an extraordinary fan base/loyalty/coalition, high and lower end who will buy the products, no matter how much price is charged especially for the most popular product, iPhone.

Apple, however, still provides lower price iphone lines to lower end customer to expand their market.

Just because lower end customers could not afford the higher end line, the lower end customers should not complain and blast Apple as a greedy company. Again, Apple is a premium / luxury product manufacturer who caters their products to whoever can afford it. Their tremendous amount of resources enable them to produce highest quality and most secured products. The highest quality, artistic design, trustworthy brand and most secured attributes make Apple products premium. Premium products generally and usually are priced highly.

It's strange how none of Apples philosophies or mission statements current or in the past have claimed to be elitist or aimed towards wealthy consumers. Their products have always been slightly more expensive but they have always been about delivering innovative technologies and thinking to the masses.

The pompous puff piece you've just written sounds more like a consumer desperate for a status symbol rather than understanding exactly what Apples aims have always been. The 'well I can afford it so screw the peasants' attitude displayed on here recently is nauseating.

Their products used to be more affordable. I knew loads of people with the white Macbooks when a half-decent model was around £800-£900, same with the iPhone back when it was starting at £499. The people who I could persuade to buy Apple years ago think I'm nuts for carrying on with them, but for me iOS and MacOS are just about worth the extra outlay.
