Some people might value having the 7S over the 8. Obviously, some people will buy it. But the question of why so many people will flock to the 8 is answered by the fact that the 8 will be sporting something new, which is going to be priced and advertised as "the best". The 7S, just based on how Apple does the pricing, will be the inferior product for most people (unless you need Touch ID).

When all is said and done, I will be expecting the 8 to outsell the 7 and 7S combined.

Yes it will be something new for Apple. But everything the new iphone can do has been out on the Galaxy S8 for 6 months. And an unlocked S8 is $575 in Amazon right now. Used to be the iPhone was the cream of the crop and only it had all these great features. Other phones have caught up and are offering the same features as the IPhone. The one thing that keeps me on iOS is iMessage. It is flawless!!! If it weren't for that I would switch immediately to save some money.

Infrared face ID?

I totally agree with you about iMessage, though. If I need to send a quick video or play a game of pool, it's right there for me. I don't have to install a third-party app (at least to send videos).

Why would people spend 80-90% of what the iPhone 8 will cost on an "inferior" product like the iPhone 7S? Apple knows their customers. They know from the flop of the iPhone 5C that they won't go for the cheaper option when there is a more expensive, "better" option available.

Depends on people’s needs, priorities & psychology. By the way, iPhone 5C was a mega-hit in the U.K., not exactly a poor country by any means. For a lot of people the phone is a tool to make calls, receive messages, browse the web, etc. All of the current iPhones do it just fine and this will not change dramatically for the majority of people, they won’t even notice that opening an app in iOS 11 takes a millisecond longer than it was on iOS 10. Besides, some people get a nice kick from just sticking it to Apple and buying their cheaper products on purpose. This must be a large enough group, by the way, hence we have a cheap entry iPad 2017 and iPhone 6S still on sale. The savings can then be used for other stuff to enhance their lives. ;)

All I want is an Android tablet which substitutes the iPad and an Android wear which also competes with the AW for notifications and I am ready to go all Android. I like ecosystems and although Android came close with the Nexus 7 and Moto 360 it seems they have all but given up on both tablet and watch.

Till then I can't afford getting the latest iPhone and the top end Android all at once. I have other things to spend my money on as Well.

You are not getting your money's worth if you own any Apple product from 2014.I had an iPhone 6 and an Air 2 from 2014. The 6s was just a 6 with 3dt and 2gb of ram and a better camera. I would have to spend 969 for that. The 7 was just a 6 with no antenna bands, a slightly better camera and dcip3 display and not worth the update. In the end I upgraded to the 7 Plus for far more money to get dual cameras and a larger screen which merited the upgrade but the money I spent gave me a tangible upgrade which I enjoyed.

So this time it's either plonk 969 on the 7s Plus and get an incremental upgrade or get the 8 for 200 more which radically changes my experience. I am getting my money's worth on the 8. I don't get that with either of the budget products you listed as neither of those devices are huge radical upgrades from the devices before it.

Honestly people who are upgrading from the 6s to the 7s aren't getting anything noteworthy.

Apple has already increased my iPad upgrade budget by forcing me to get the pro variants despite not doing any professional work on it so it was only a matter of time before they did that with iPhone. Now it's just a matter of time to see if their flagships start becoming downright unaffordable in which case I will be forced to break my ecosystem

Sure, if you look at Apple products as a long-term investment strategy. However, come Tuesday, 12 Sep, and iPhone 7 can be expected to drop in price down to 639$ (the current 6S pricing). And 7, compared to 6, is not just a better camera and different antenna bands: add water resistance (quite handy), the fusion chip and non-moving home button, all of which greatly improve its longevity vs 6 & 6S. And don’t forget about those poor souls upgrading from 5S, SE and simply wanting to try a bigger screen without having to pay 400$ more to get on the bleeding edge of iPhonesque experience with iPhone X. ;) In a year from now, as Apple continue refining the technology to be introduced in iPhone X (OLED, wireless charging, water resistance & Face ID) you would still want more, they know exactly how to pull our strings and the tech advances really fast. However, I type all this on iPad Air 2 running the latest iOS 11 public beta with no issues at all and can continue doing so for at least another year under iOS 11. As for the iPad 2017, it does everything “non professional” just fine for a very comfortable price from 329$. So all our “pressure to upgrade” might be just a mind trick after all. Your current 7 Plus can serve you very well for another few years, no doubt.

I'm on an iPad Air 2 as well, and it's really incredible the kind of longevity it has had, even with battery life. The only reason I may want to upgrade to a 10.5" Pro next year is that I'm looking to shoot stills and 4K on my new Panasonic GX85. Will be handy to edit on the new iPad. My personal philosophy is to not succumb to every impulse to buy the newest, most enticingly marketed device.

Because Apple builds a better product (hardware and software integration) and offers superior customer service as well. Samsung cannot compete at all levels. Not even close, in my opinion.

Not sure how anybody could say that Apple builds a better product. I look at the new samsung lineup vs apples and think they are too close to see a difference. Customer support is definitely a win by Apple though.

I suppose that's the geek in me resulting in me not understanding how the average customer thinks lol. I want to upgrade annually. The 6s was the only phone I didnt get. I find the 8 to be a huge change as fast as iPhones go and wont even consider the 7S coming from a 7. OLED, 3d sensing modules, cameras with AR support, TrueTone and possibly ProMotion. These have a dramatic impact on user experience and can make a incremental upgrade at 969 into a completely new experience at 1200 or so.

The iPad 2017 is a good tablet and my Air 2 did serve me well but originally Apple was providing great upgrades at the $499 price point. Now it doesnt. Now that I have experienced TrueTone and ProMotion theres no way I would want to use my Air 2 now. What I dont like is that Apple didnt bring in both those features into the 2017 iPad. I have no use for the Apple Pencil so I never wanted the Pro variant anyway but it was the only tablet to be an upgrade from the AIr 2

Look at my post again. Apple is superior in hardware and software integration. The overall user experience with the Apple ecosystem (as a whole) is one of Apple's strongest selling points, in my opinion.

Samsung may produce a quality screen and a few other components. However, if the software and product integration is lacking, along with customer service, (which I believe is the case) Apple will continue to be on top.

Being first to the technological table doesn't necessarily mean success.

I am a geek too & also like upgrading, but not at this price point. So I can happily upgrade to iPhone 7 from my current SE, still improving my experience a lot. I’ll be a year “behind”, but this is not a big deal for me.

I really wanted the X's screen. I'd be a bit gutted at missing out on the best camera, but I've not been overly bothered about the difference between the plus and standard model's since the 6. The screen is the main thing that's annoying. It is however, nowhere near annoying enough for me to part with the 200 quid difference between the 7S/8 and the X.

There is nothing wrong upgrading to an older device when the new one launches. The iPhone 7 truthfully has been my favorite device thus far. I think you will really enjoy it.
