Call me skeptical but I don't think a software featured is going to drive gazillions of sales to a phone that looks identical to existing models. The average consumer likes Apple because their products are sexy and it's easy to tell them apart, an iPhone 4S with some new software is too geeky to differentiate for the average Joe.

You know most people with an iPhone4 can't upgrade until next year. iP4S will be for people would either currently can't get a phone on their network, ready to move to iPhone, or currently have a iPhone older then iP4....

BS!!!! People like Apple's stuff because it works!!!! Sexy is what you read from reviewers and bloggers. Their stuff effing works as advertised. I have the 2008 Al unibody macbook and it has never and I mean never crashed or gotten a virus. Knock on wood that none of the electronic parts have failed but that will soon come because sh** don't last forever. But so far this effing laptop is amazing!!!

I expect this depends on your definition of crashing. Having to force quit an application because it has stopped responding, does this count?

Don't get me wrong, my last two laptops have been MBPs and I've enjoyed using them both, would recommend and purchase again, but yours has not crashed in three years? You're either exceptionally fortunate, or you've not used it for two and a half of those three.

On another note, the public embarrassment factor will go away if the 4S reaches 'critical mass' and if people are seen to be using it in public. Much like, I suspect, the original mobile phone. I must confess I can't remember the introduction of the mobile, however I wonder if people felt self conscious (or perhaps just incredibly smug, a la Wall Street?) using them in public at first?

Get enough people using this feature, and it'll become the norm. Admittedly, this is a circular argument, as you still need to convince the first adopters that they don't look like fools speaking commands into their phones, but there you go. All that would then remain would be the privacy angle.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a big deal? Much bigger than a .5" addition to a screen.

Forget something like this which could actually be useful, I want a LARGER SCREEN and NEW DESIGN! I'm not interested in something that could end up being a technological break through, I'm too worried about annoying other people in coffee shops! Give me my iPhone 5, not some crappy iPhone 4S that sounds like a completely worthwhile upgrade!

How is a new design useful? There is nothing wrong with the current design...

Nope I am completely with you. If Apple pulls this off they would have revolutionized yet another thing.

This is what we see in moues where we have conversation with the computer. People just don't understand what is happening here yet

I'll probably just jailbreak my iPhone 4 for this. I"m happy with it as it is at the minute and I'm happy to sit out the 4S and wait for the next year's model

I have been saying this... People comparing this to google voice commands in android simply dont understand what this is.

You will literally talk to your phone like it is your human assistant and it will be able to parse from that and execute a massive number of behaviors.

This will be see new cutting edge technology not previously seen in consumer devices.

???????

Why is it that everything apple does is called game changing new iphone with dual core cpu= game changing voice assisstant=game changing these things have been around apple has always been late to new technology they just wait to see if people like it then they put out thier own remember no one needs a 4 inch screen or bigger in a phone now there is rumor thier will be a iphone 5 with 4 or bigger screen love apple but they are not gsame changing look at the droid bionic or galaxy s II or htc sensation android is taking over apple needs to step up thier game if tomorrow doesnt produce what you all are waiting to see what then iphone 4s what is that CRAP i want something new to go along side my 2g 3g 3gs and 4 i have them all with original boxes in plastic to preserve them yes that is what a true fan of apple does so when im using a htc sensation and loving it thats not good i took off tomorrow so i can hear what i hope to hear IPHONE 5 IPHONE 5 if i dont ill be dissapointed. WHAT ABOUT YOU ALL?

To those saying that you can just jailbreak the ip4 and have assistant work with it, it was also true about multitasking and other things with the 3G. But when you jailbroke it, it did rhave all the 3GS' features, but it crashed or froze or was slow as hell..

Of course, Apple wants to favour new products by giving them "exclusive" features (whether truly or "artificially" -by limiting them on other prod.) but it especially wants to protect its image by making sure its products really work well (for example facetime lags due to bad/slow 3G connection).

What drives me crazy though, is paying 900$ for a phone (ip4) that now seems useless one year later when software upgrades don't take it into consideration and when it therefore seems to have been dumped by the company (as its clients that spent so much in buying it).

If it works as well as shown in the video, its going to a major step forward in the history of consumers and technology.

Obviously, for a variety of reasons Assistant isn't going to be the *only* way people interact with their phones. But it certainly seems like a major step forward towards full natural-language interaction with computing devices. To say nothing of giving a couple hundred million existing iPhone owners a good reason to buy into the next hardware cycle.

Your analysis is 180 degrees backwards. The assistant is going to sell way more phones than a bigger screen ever will. Media will go crazy showcasing the new assistant technology. A bigger screen or case design is literally a two second blurb

If talking to your device is interesting to you. Is it a fantastic feature - sure if that's your gig. But for my use cases - I would use it very little no matter how "magical" it is. IE - you're not going to be using it in a business setting.

I feel this will provide a huge benefit to the blind community or people with special needs. I feel like Apple is going to play a video tomorrow that will make us all cry.

"Its magical" *sheds a tear* :)

I too feel that would be a game changer in the industry.

It's call marketing and pr. Apple is one of the best to hype up their own products as revolutionary and magical. Despite and regardless of the history that came before it.

And die-hard Apple fans perpetuate the "myth" because that's just what they do. And even go as far as to re-invent history.

you are talking a bit crazy!! apple is ALWAYS late to new tech?? i would say apple is more often than not the innovator. what came first, iOS or android? what came first iPhone or android phones? what came first, iPad or xoom?

I still don't understand how this differs from WP7...

"Call Molly"

Molly Smith or Molly Doe?

"Smith"

Home or mobile?

"Cell"

Calling Molly Smith, Mobile

Of course I could have just said "Call Molly Smith Cell" and saved a lot of needless back-and-forth between me and my phone.

Not so much for call-making. But it will assist you in adding a Calendar entry, planning a trip, many other things that WP7 can't do yet. The media is going to go bananas over this. "Star Trek has arrived".
