AI/Voice

If it has lots of practical functionality and works well it could be huge, another Apple-led user input paradigm shift.

A measly 4S doesn't sound so lame now, does it?

Molly Smith or Molly Doe?

Calling Molly Smith, Mobile

Of course I could have just said "Call Molly Smith Cell" and saved a lot of needless back-and-forth between me and my phone.

If that's all it did, it wouldn't be better than WP7 or various other voice dialing systems. I have no idea how well it will work, but I'm pretty sure it's a lot more ambitious that what you showed.

I can see many anti-Apple people are feeling VERY nervous and scared right about now. Apple is just about to sew up the smartphone market for the next 10 years with this.

*LTD* is beside himself right now. He knows he can now lord it over Fandroids forever, despite not being a scientist or engineer much less involved on this project.

You need to get ahold of yourself. It's just a cellphone and this "revolutionary" feature has been around for years and based on my own personal experiences, it works fairly well.

Why is it that everything apple does is called game changing new iphone with dual core cpu= game changing voice assisstant=game changing these things have been around apple has always been late to new technology they just wait to see if people like it then they put out thier own remember no one needs a 4 inch screen or bigger in a phone now there is rumor thier will be a iphone 5 with 4 or bigger screen love apple but they are not gsame changing look at the droid bionic or galaxy s II or htc sensation android is taking over apple needs to step up thier game if tomorrow doesnt produce what you all are waiting to see what then iphone 4s what is that CRAP i want something new to go along side my 2g 3g 3gs and 4 i have them all with original boxes in plastic to preserve them yes that is what a true fan of apple does so when im using a htc sensation and loving it thats not good i took off tomorrow so i can hear what i hope to hear IPHONE 5 IPHONE 5 if i dont ill be dissapointed. WHAT ABOUT YOU ALL?

I think you should get the enter key on your keyboard fixed.

To be fair, the guy that's calling this game-changing (world-changing actually) was part of the company that developed the technology.

And buy whatever phone you want.

I can talk to my android and "write" entire emails, text messages (very accurately once you get used to it) and whatever I want to yet I use this feature once every chinese year. It's out there for ages but nothing groundbreaking in my opinion no matter how apple will make it look.

Did you read the article? Siri is several iterations ahead of the next best VRS. Whatever you see in Google Voice Commands or MSFT TellMe is primitive by comparison. The Apple PAL will allow you to use natural language and conduct a conversation with you about virtually everything in the iOS. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if you can edit settings with this!

Yeah some people erroneously think this is traditional dictation software it is not. It is comprehension and execution software.

People saying they can write emails and text on their android devices don't get what this will be

Hopefully you'll be able to say things like "Text Molly Smith, tell her I'm running late and I'll be there in 10 minutes." Which will be really handy while driving.

And maybe integration with other apps, so I can say "GPS, find the nearest gas station." after it texts Molly.

or maybe they just don't care? Why is it that you always think you know better or more than other posters. Jeesh

Geez...I have no clue what you just said. But I did get my kicks with that one assertion. Wait...you can't be for real, are you?

I wonder if this will be built into the plists like multitasking and home screen wallpaper, meaning devices that "can't run it" can simply have it enabled by changing the word from false to true in the string when jailbroken.

incorrect -- the jailbroken phones (older hardware) could use the wallpapers, but couldnt render the fine drop-shadow effect around app icons properly, bogging them down. that was the reason.

Voice Commands + Speech Recognition ≠ AI Personal Assistant

Hello, computer?

If only Kirk and the crew had come back to 2012 instead of 1984.

I dispute the claim that this tech has been around for years. Speech
Recognition in Android is nowhere near comparable.

This sounds trivial and obvious to me, or at least that's what some will have you believe a few years from now when all oems try to incorporate something like this into their devices.

Newsflash, any smartphone that is for sale today already has a feature like this and has had it for at least the last 3 years.

so if this AI was so revolutionary why did it not get implemented in desktop computers first? why is it implemented in the devices with the least processing power first?

oh i dunno, maybe because it's already so frickin easy to input into a desktop computer w/ keyboard & mouse? perhaps? ya think? durrrr

I have been saying this... People comparing this to google voice commands in android simply dont understand what this is.

You will literally talk to your phone like it is your human assistant and it will be able to parse from that and execute a massive number of behaviors.

This will be see new cutting edge technology not previously seen in consumer devices.

No one (outside Apple) understands what this is, not me, not you, not anyone. All we have are unconfirmed rumors and in this specific case, someone boasting his formerly own technology without having any knowledge about what Apple has done with it for the last two years.
As the quotes in the article indicates, he, just as every one else, can only guess what development has taken place since his own last, official release.

The main problem with voice commands is that it's far less intuitive than a touchscreen interface; you have to make an effort to learn the commands. And let's face it; there's a ton more that we could be doing with the tech we already have if we just sat down with the manuals and really dug into the feature sets.

For voice navigation to really be compelling, it has to have a very small learning curve.

That is the point. You don't have to learn the commands. You will speak to your phone in normal English and it will be able to accomplish what you want.

How people dont see this as a revolutionary change is beyond me but it will be the talk of most media by tomorrow afternoon.

I wont use Assistant anywhere but home, IMO, I'd find it disturbing and awkward to use in public.

I thought this, then I was walking down main street looking for my friend. He told me what restaurant he was parked by, but I wasn't quite sure what block it was on.

I had to:
1. open entertainment folder
2. open yelp, wait for it to load
3. Type in the restaurant, let it search
4. Select the restaurant
5. click directions to business

an alternative route would be google, but that would still take multiple steps and I chose yelp.

OR:
1. "Assistant, where is the restaurant?"

I was by myself on a social street, and wouldn't have felt awkward.

so if this AI was so revolutionary why did it not get implemented in desktop computers first?

Because your desktop computer isn't in your car when you are driving (or in the kitchen when you are cooking, or other places where your hands and eyes aren't free). This is where most people would have a much bigger incentive to learn how to use it, get comfortable with it, and then use it more often.

Almost nobody wants to talk at their desktop computer (except people with severe carpal tunnel and other injuries). However after a few hundred hours of ordinary people successfully and usefully talking to their mobile computer in the car because they have to in that situation, people will change, and get used to it. Then their kids (or grandkids) will grow up thinking it strange that people didn't talk with their computers all the time.

It's most ofter not the (alleged) original inventor who makes the big change, it's the company who pushes society to the turning point of adoption and use. Apple does that.

Ok apple needs to add a "status" for iphone users. For instance, if the user 1is in a meeting, the Iphone status is listed as "in a meeting." This status would be able to be view by other iphone users with "user 1" in their contacts list.

So lets say I am driving on the road, and I want to contact "user 1" I voice command "call user 1 mobile". Voice assistant comes back and says, "User 1 is in a meeting, would you like to text him instead?" I would say " Yes, Text him I am running 10 minutes late"

That would be a outstanding use of this service... with iMessage it should be able to offer iphone to iphone status. Complete with calendar intergration also! That would be AWESOME!

What drives me crazy though, is paying 900$ for a phone (ip4) that now seems useless one year later

what are you talking about? will your iphone4 suddenly stop working? stop doing all the things you originally bought it to do? nope.

it seems the problem is your expectation -- that a tech product you bought 15 months ago should magically be able to do more stuff in the future. odd.

I don't understand what's the deal with the "talking to a phone in public"? Who'd have thought 15 years ago that people will talk to a box in public? Hasn't anyone ever had a conversation on their mobile phone at an airport, mall etc.? Or do all the people complaining about this use their mobile phone only when they're alone/in their car?

Even people need to change along with technology.

Yeah when apple is suing people for trying to copy them lol. People here will be like "how else are you supposed to talk to a phone like a human being" lmao
