When you can just upgrade the white one to 250 gb and it's $100 less. Is it being dyed black worth $100?
I gave my Blackbook to a friend's kid, and she's only had it for a few weeks - and while it was starting to look just slightly scuffed in my possession, I saw her with it recently and it looks like crap.
Exactly - it's a status symbol. If you own a black macbook/expensive car/designer shirt, you show to people around you that you have enough money to buy something more expensive out of principle. Why do some people buy Gucci shirts when you can get H&M shirts for $500 less? Why do some people buy BMWs when you can get a Honda for $50000 less?
I'd like to add that most people who buy Macbooks aren't familiar with the product lineup, like us MR followers are. They likely don't know about the fact that customizing the lower-priced white macbook to match the specs of the BlackBook would save them 100$, so they just buy the black one. Plus, the price difference between all MB versions is equal (200$), so they probably think better HDD capacity + nicer color is worth the money.
About the status symbol thing... Not sure that many people automatically equate the black macbook with $$$, that's too specific. They probably do when it comes to Apple, as a brand, tho.
why do the color nanos cost more then the 4gb silver one? lol![]()

It's not a black-dyed finish but a rubberised layer of paint, and when you first heave it out of the box it looks pretty classy. However the finish isn't anywhere near as durable as a matt Thinkpad and collects fingerprint oils too easily. When you combine Thinkpad wannabe with inferior build quality, you get... well, not a good result.
It's a personal choice. Some people prefer white while others prefer black.
