Because. I need the latest tech.

On the contrary , the "S" models are far better than the normal models.

Normal models? That would make the the "S" models "abnormal"?

The S model is just a tech bumped version of the previous model. It's improved as any succeeding model should be, but mostly around the edges. Then the next full generation launches the next year and it's the better model, also around the edges, but with a new form factor. And so the cycle continues. To suggest the S model is "far better" is nothing but hyperbole.

What do people do on their iPhone that requires them upgrading to a new phone every year?

I can see the need to upgrade if you play games I guess.

I think it's not so much a need as a desire to experience new technology and features. I still have my old flip phone, which despite several years of use, still works and has a decent battery.

I didn't need an iPhone, but I wanted a device that had more capability. Having maps, email, and a whole host of other information at my fingertips has made my life easier.

Because I want to. Thats the only reason. Lets see what you spend your money on so we can go on and on about what you should and shouldnt have.

Honestly, what is the point of threads like these.

Trolling. Mac Rumors allows these types of threads because it generates income for them.

Before switching to iPhone (3G), I switched phones every three or four months. Every two-years now.

It's funny the lengths people go to justify bad decisions. I'm guilty of upgrading more than I need to, but at least I accept that I'm throwing money away.

Everyone does it to some extent. You dont actually even need a cell phone or a TV or many other things people enjoy but the OP is here criticizing.

It isn't a phone anymore. Most people probably use the phone part of an iPhone the least of anything else. It's a hand computer. A full fledged hand based computer. That's why people upgrade them frequently. The exact same reason people used to upgrade their desktop machines every couple years.
So basically, because they're tech geeks? :p To be honest, the only people I know who upgraded their computers often were techies and gamers (and really, the designations often overlap). The rest seem to run their computers to the ground. I have a co-worker who asked me for advice with his Pentium III computer recently.

1, because I wanted a new phone to replace my crappy htc

2, been an apple geek since getting my macbook air and ipad 4

3, I've saved a lot to be able to afford it and also because I can :)

I agree but my point was that some people like to kid themselves that they're actually financially better off upgrading to the latest model, which doesn't really make sense. I do try to get a good deal when I buy and sell technology but I have to admit that I'd be better off financially just sticking to what I have!

No one "needs" to upgrade. No one actually "needs" a cell phone at all.... "want"... now that's a horse of a different color.

I don't. I upgrade every 2 years. I think 1 year is not enough for a phone to get advanced. Also I like to get bonded with my phone.

I don't see how this can be.. My rates are the same whether I buy subsidized or outright.
Exactly. Meaning if you didn't get a new phone subsidized, you're still paying the subsidy and giving AT&T or Verizon free money every month. The reason data plans are enforced for smartphones is because that's what pays for majority of the subsidy.

I loved my iPhone 4. It was my perfect phone for about three years. I didn't like the 5s being bigger, but the improvements to the camera made me trade in my beloved 4. The camera is an important part of the iPhone for me.

I don't like my 5 the way I liked the 4 though. The increase in size was sufficient to annoy me as the extra length was enough to make it less comfortable to pocket, but not sufficient to let me enjoy the screen better. I've been waiting for the next model to come out.

I'm getting a 6+ because it's going to open up a whole new user experience for me--hopefully a positive one because it's a much bigger form factor. Again, it offers substantial improvements to the camera. If I find I'm content, it is possible I'll hang onto it and skip the S. But I am on AT&T Next now, so I may upgrade to the S just because I can, and because there is guaranteed to be an incremental upgrade in specs.

Thats not completely true. It assumes you wouldnt spend that money on the next most enjoyable thing. Its a trade off.

Tell us about how your business is so cutting edge that it can only work with the latest iPhone release.

doubt it has anything to do with that. more that the iPhone is critical to his ability to make money, so the purchase is a lot easier to justify. Or he can expense it. or he can get a tax deduction.
