Actually, OS X is a certified UNIX platform. He was wrong in saying that it's a Linux fork, though, since Linux isn't a fork of UNIX. I've never installed a commercial UNIX system (or Linux, for that matter), so I don't know if they don't have licensing keys.

EDIT: hrm. Apparently, vBulletin has issues with SVG.

For a full dose of crazy try this diagram here.

Mainly the Honor System.

Also, they know that in order to use OS X you still need a Mac, and if they used serial numbers people would still pirate them anyway so why bother? It's really all just trust and knowing that they make their money on the computers. They offer a Family pack for the people who feel guilty having two or more Macs and only one copy of OS X. By offering a cheap discounted version that says "It's okay to install me on all 5 of your computers" it makes people feel better. Plus it saves them a lot of money by not requiring them to buy full priced single packs 5 times.

Ugh, WRONG. The Darwin kernel is OSS. The rest of the system, the parts that make up a majority of what people would consider to be OS X, is not.

OS X has many Open Source technologies built in. Samba, Apache & WebKit being very obvious and well known examples.

http://www.apple.com/opensource/

Apple do though manipulate OSS in a way that is entirely selfish. Things like WebKit and Darwin benefit greatly from being open sourced, but Apple understands (and abuses) the fact that by building closed source front-ends (OS X GUI, Safari) on top they get the benefits of OSS without people really being able to use it.

im happy apple trusts us! lol and is it possible to use a cd copy of a leapord cd to install on other macs?

No it isn't

Gas is not 5 bucks a gallon anywhere

In NY, one of the more expensive states for gas is at 2.50 which is 8 gallons which can fill up most of a tank for a smaller car

my bad, did the math wrong. it's about 8 gallons. that's just about half full in the average car. Is it really worth stealing what amounts too about a half tank of gas?

I wanna know where you can get a tank of gas for $20. Around here that's more like 4 gallons...

To honest people no lol

funny how you guys want to be honest to a big corporation company. Apple could care less about you guys.

Apple doesnt give you anything for honesty, just more products.

Where ever i can save money, i will. And TBH, buying a family pack is a waste of those $20 because its the same thing as the $29 upgrade.

your just giving apple money, for no apparent reason.

anyways, you guys enjoy your LICENSED software :) it will be no different from the ones on my machines

Actually having no product keys and stuff like that can be viewed as a "prize" for honesty. Also, you are not giving Apple money for no reason. There are people who work there you know

Just because Apple is a "big corpopration company" doesn't mean that it doesn't care about its users. If it didn't care for us users, there wouldn't be such good customer service at Apple Stores and there wouldn't be a Mac + an iPhone in the first place.

I purchased Apple products for their customer service, im a apple fanboy, i love apple products lol. But where i can save money i will because lets face it, apple products aren't that cheap.

I appreciate what Apple does for us. They treat us with a little bit of dignity. At least we can reciprocate and do the RIGHT and respectable thing. Crissakes, its only $29! Thats not even enough to take the ole lady out to eat or buy a case of quality beer.

Integrity. It's not just for other people.

You can diagram that sentence any way you want.

Seriously, are you cheaper than $20? It's akin to stealing a candy bar at a grocery store. Maybe you weren't caught, but it's not honest. I have two Macs and will buy the upgrade when it comes out. No need to go all pre-order. I've bought the $9.95 upgrade for my MBP already. A man is nothing with integrity. If we keep breaking the honor system, Apple's software will become like Microsoft's; which means POS, product keys, validation, genuine advantage, etc. We don't need another Microsoft plaguing the software market, one is bad enough.

Sure we will enjoy our licensed software, but it will be different from your software. We paid for it, you just went to underhanded means. It doesn't matter if Apple is a big corporation. Does that make music piracy okay? No, in the last few years, two people were sued by the RIAA for this and one case has already ended up with RIAA winning and collecting damages.

For one thing, Apple software is pretty cheap. iWork is under $100, iLife as well. Microsoft is charging a minimum of $149 for Windows 7 Home whatever version.

To make money off of people that at too dumb to realize you don't need multiple licenses, or think they are being honest or ethical when they follow the EULA of a company like Apple that rips off its customers.

I use one copy for 2 macs, call the police... how about the 6,000 dollars I spent on macbooks in the past few years.

I have a question

For everyone in this thread whose tying in ethics and honesty and integrity with purchasing family packs of OS X for multiple computers, I must ask, did you always do this for all software? I mean, it wasn't that long ago when buying a single copy of software allowed you to install it on as many computers as you owned (of course, this is before piracy became such a problem via internet etc etc).

Why do you consider it "ethical" to follow the EULA agreement? Do you think it's justified that software companies can charge you multiple times for each time you want to install a piece of software on a computer you own?

I'm glad to see that people do in fact, are trying to act in a manner that they conceive as ethical, even when there is essentially no benefit in doing so. (This in fact, makes me feel quite a bit better about people.) However, it find it extremely bizarre that people are tying this to rather heavy-handed moral judgements.

The latest version of iWork did away with keys too. So retail versions of iWork and iLife are both Key free

Aperture however, has a very long and annoying key.

besides trusting its customers, it is possible that Apple may be of the mindset, hey were at ~10% market share, if a couple extra people get the OS maybe they will discover how much they like it and buy a new apple machine in the future

Just another reason why cloud computing will take over in a few years.
We need significantly more bandwidth for internet access for a lot of applications though. :p

It's not the same everywhere, and the US sort of sucks. :( The infrastructure appears to be at or near capacity in many areas (particularly as you get more rural), and the systems need upgrading/expansion. :( When I think about this, I find myself tempted to move to Japan. :p Mmm...80Mb/s. :D

I'm going to break into your house and steal your mac. It'll be no different to the NOT STOLEN macs used by other people. Why would I buy one when I can steal yours, it'll be giving apple money, for no apparent reason. Buying a mac is a waste of money as its the same thing as your stolen one.

After all, its funny why you'd want to be honest.
