It amazes me how some people here have the nerve to admit that they are going to buy the $29 version of SL and installing on multiple Macs. I just hope that the next version of Mac OS X requires it to be downloaded through iTunes and is DRM'd for use on one computer.

I don't plan on buying it, period, and I don't mind admitting it.

HLDan: Technically no. What he is saying is that aside from the very few people who go through the painstaking process that is hackintosh, you need authentic Apple hardware to join club mac. It is a fairly good simile. Make sense?

Is the UTD disc the same as the $29 SL disc? If the family pack and $29 disc are both the same and people are buying the $29 for multiple computers who is to say that one person cant buy the UTD disc and use that for multiple computers, because the last time i checked the UTD disc is the same as the $29 disc, the only difference is that the people paying $10 where the ones who bought a mac after the WWDC.

because you have to register your computer serial to see if you qualify for the utd....

ill be honest. ive pirated vista before, but when it comes to apple, im DEFINITLY buying theyre stuff. im an apple fanboy :D
JUst getiing tired of mircrosoft, dont give a **** about em tbh. (been PC user for about 9 years, apple user for 2 months :3)

The real answer is because they have 8% marketshare. If they were as big as Microsoft, there would be a CD key.

They're a hardware company, which they've reiterated time and again. That and Apple likes things as simple as possible. If you're buying a new version of the OS, chances are they've already got the money out of you. CD Keys are completely unnecessary in this case.

I bought a family pack today.

A friend bought a MBP yesterday, and she got a snow leopard disc, as it had just come out.

I saw it, right there, laying on the table, already used, essentially a dust collector.

I could have "borrowed it"

I believe in paying for something that is worth it. Since i've switched to Apple, I feel my life has been enriched.

I already know OSX is amazing. and I already know I have 3 macs at home that could all benefit from a single disc, but
$50 for an upgrade, to support a company that does so much of what I like.
Well worth it to me. :apple:

Apple is smarter than you think

I'm pretty sure that Apple has a way to determine which cd is used to install the OS on any given computer. I'm guessing Apple enters it for [you].

The kind of person you could really put your trust in...

That is one of the most ridiculous statements i've heard. You're basing your complete trust in someone just because they made a statement over the internet forum?

I'm not arguing about the ethics of the snow leopard as i have bought it but that is just crazy what you just said

Even if they did, what would that prove? That I used a specific CD regardless of what licensed version I had on before I wiped a disk and started over?

Don't be afraid. Just be honest.

Don't be afraid... [of what?] Just be honest... [thanks for the advice Mom]. Are you the self-appointed hall monitor of morality? I've never illegally installed an OS in my life.

You missed my point entirely. Presumably, the hardware/OS ratio for Apple is 1 to 1. Same goes for OS upgrades; one Snow Leopard for each system that it can be installed on.

Now, say that I want to be "Snow Leopard Santa" for my entire neighborhood, or school and go ahead and install one licensed copy on 40, 50, 1000 machines... who cares, Apple is not watching.

All I am suggesting is that, at some point, the system serial number and hardware UUID get bound together with some unique identifier on the install disc and sent to Apple. Sure, they are not going to do a thing if a disc is used for a few unsanctioned installs/upgrades. However, I've got to believe that there is some magic number at which Apple take action.

And, if you "wipe your disc and start over", or even replace your hard drive, that's swell; the same set of identifiers will be sent and I can only imagine that would simply be interpreted as a reinstallation.

Whatever the case may be, my initial post was nothing more than logical speculation, and I stand by it; Apple is keeping score.

The client version doesn't have a CD key because Apple's core business is selling hardware.

Of course for the server version is is a CD key alright.

If I'm able to save $20 I'm going to take advantage of it. I've given Apple plenty of money over the years, and the fact that I would install it on multiple computers proves that.

Apple also provided you with hardware in exchange for that money you gave to them. Your post sets a horrible example, you certainly should be embarrassed for even writing it.
