how about the 6,000 dollars I spent on macbooks in the past few years.

What about it? That's what you agreed to pay for the hardware + OS and bundled software at the time of initial purchase...

Where the hell does this ridiculous notion that it is ok to pay for hardware but software should somehow be free come from?

After biting my tongue in the "Do Mac users pirate software" thread I just can't do it any longer. SOFTWARE IS A PRODUCT, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER. IF THE DEVELOPER ASKS FOR MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR IT'S USE THEN YOU PAY THE MONEY OR LOOK ELSEWHERE!!! There is no justification for stealing ever. Period!

Judging by one of your previous posts, Apple's been *VERY* generous to you. And you thank them by abusing their trust? What a disgusting thing to do!

funny how you guys want to be honest to a big corporation company. Apple could care less about you guys.

Apple doesnt give you anything for honesty, just more products.

Where ever i can save money, i will. And TBH, buying a family pack is a waste of those $20 because its the same thing as the $29 upgrade.

your just giving apple money, for no apparent reason.

anyways, you guys enjoy your LICENSED software :) it will be no different from the ones on my machines

The people on here saying 'why give money to Apple' are probably the same ones that post the "Go Apple!!" type comments when Apple announce their profits.

I install OSX and iLife on four family macs, so I buy the Family Packs. Seems very, very fair to me ;)

just going to buy the $29 upgrade and install it on my 4 macs.

saves money

There is another thread where this concept was being sandblasted.

Do people pirate software for the Mac

So I will just point out here that The Fiery Furnaces, a band, are releasing their next album --a little number called "The Silent Album"-- with this explanation: "Since bands can no longer sell audio, FF decline to provide it." Apparently one will also acquire sheetmusic for the release, and instructions on how to perform it. Their message seems pretty clear to me.

http://pitchfork.com/news/36088-fiery-furnaces-release-silent-record/

Of course all that may be seen as somewhat tongue in cheek (or deadly serious) but eventually one does come to the point of not bothering to create goods for sale when no revenue is garnered. And of course long before that, the effect of declining revenues present themselves in assorted distressing ways.

As for this thread: I love the convenience of having a 5-seat license for my machines and always buy the family packs when they're offered.

I'm constantly amazed at people who think pirating software from a large corporation is somehow "different" than stealing a something from their local grocery store.

The agreement you make when you go into a grocery store is that anything you take out of the store, you pay for. And for the most part, people think this is a fair agreement. Why do so many people have issues with same type of agreements with software companies?

Would people who think pirating software is OK also tell their kids (or nieces and nephews, etc) that it is OK to shoplift?

And, so those people who justify their pirating of software by saying that software licences are in themselves a form of thievery - well, have those people done anything to convince the software maker to change their licensing term? Written one letter? Gone to one stockholder meeting? Even, gone to court? No? Then don't claim the higher ground.

That's my morning rant. If you want to steal software, just go ahead and do it. But please don't come here to try to justify it, or look for support, or to brag about it.

oh okay. Well, is it possible to use the family pack and split between friends? I guess apple wouldn't know whether its family or not as long as its 5 different people with their own cd?

I am not sure why you are even posting here.
If you want to pirate software, go ahead. Don't post here and hope that someone says sure thats fine, you have our blessing.

Either do it legitimately or not. If you have to ask if using a "FAMILY" pack is ok to use with your "FRIENDS", I think you have other issues.

Personally I think the Family pack price of $50 is a great price, and shouldn't be abused. If your friends really can't afford a license for a mere $29, then how were they able to afford an Apple product in the first place?

They COULD care less about you ? Yes they could.

Smart Cars

We did a week-long driving trip last spring. Victoria, BC to mid-coast Oregon, and back north via eastern Washington. $65 in gas. :D

Yeah and all you could bring for luggage was one pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and a tissue for a towel. Good luck if you get into an accident with a truck, jeep, SUV or something in a smart car. I would rather pay the extra money and actually have a chance of surviving a crash.

I'm going to buy the $49 pack for my three macs because it's the right thing to do.

On top of that reason enough are some added incentives:

1) I like Apple, even when they piss me off, because I think they're responsible for a whole lot of good in the computer world.

2) I'm so thrilled with the lack of activation and serialization on MacOS software that I'll gladly pay the $49.

Admittedly, we wouldn't have fit golf-clubs into the car!

But, if you can fly with carry on luggage, then a couple can pack for a Smart Car. We even had room to pick up and bring back a bucket of beach rocks (my wife), and more importantly - some beer from the brew pub at Cape Kiwanda (we had to split that between the two of us). Was it Pelican? I can't remember the name of the pub now.

As regards accidents.... The Smart Car has top marks. Top scores for front and side crashes from the Insurance Institute. It bounces. Occupants are inside a steel cage. When involved in accident, airbags inflate and hold them in place while 1) the other car's crumple zones absorb the impact. A friend ours was involved in a head on accident with a SUV, while in her Smart Car, on her way to work. She was late for work, but she was fine - and she had the Smart Car fixed. The SUV was written-off. It wasn't actually that badly damaged, but it would have cost so much to replace the crumpled bits, it was cheaper to replace the whole thing.

But I don't think our friend had a family pack license in the car that day.

OS X has many Open Source technologies built in. Samba, Apache & WebKit being very obvious and well known examples.

http://www.apple.com/opensource/

Apple do though manipulate OSS in a way that is entirely selfish. Things like WebKit and Darwin benefit greatly from being open sourced, but Apple understands (and abuses) the fact that by building closed source front-ends (OS X GUI, Safari) on top they get the benefits of OSS without people really being able to use it.

And here I was thinking that Nokia and Palm use WebKit...

:) Agreed. Pretty impressive. I guess there is more room than I thought. Glad you got to bring the beer back. How does it taste?

Three selfish people in a room. One guy isn't less selfish because the other two are just as selfish.

That said, this is the way OSS was supposed to function so thinking in terms of selflessness and selfishness is missing the point. OSS gets better when it's used by anyone towards their own ends, so long as people follow the rules.

We brought back the Porter... one of the better ones that I've had. It had that nice thick, sort of chocolate flavour - but had a smooth finish. Yum Yum. We have friends who fit a hockey bag and sticks in theirs. Its cramped .. the sticks sit with the business ends at the passenger's feet and the other end in the back, so the driver has to pay attention when using the parking brake - a lever that sits between the driver and passenger - but it can be done.

There are some inconveniences, sometimes, but we love the car. Its fun to drive, its cheap to drive, and its easy to park. In Victoria they now have special, half-price, parking meters for "micro-cars". When we go to a dinner party, we can always find a spot near the house. Important when you live in a rain-forest.

We save so much money on gas, I can easily afford the family pack licenses (just to keep it on topic, eh?).

To make money off of people that at too dumb to realize you don't need multiple licenses, or think they are being honest or ethical when they follow the EULA of a company like Apple that rips off its customers.

I use one copy for 2 macs, call the police... how about the 6,000 dollars I spent on macbooks in the past few years.

What you spent on hardware has nothing to do with the price of the family license for Snow Leopard. You have not documented your opinion that Apple rips off its customers. So, not to offend, but in this thread, I liked this post a lot better:

Actually having no product keys and stuff like that can be viewed as a "prize" for honesty. Also, you are not giving Apple money for no reason. There are people who work there you know

Just because Apple is a "big corpopration company" doesn't mean that it doesn't care about its users. If it didn't care for us users, there wouldn't be such good customer service at Apple Stores and there wouldn't be a Mac + an iPhone in the first place.

Yep :) and let's not forget two-finger scrolling which I so love.

I purchased Apple products for their customer service, im a apple fanboy, i love apple products lol. But where i can save money i will because lets face it, apple products aren't that cheap.
And so why does this justify not paying for Snow Leopard?

I'm glad that Apple does not require an activation code for Mac OS X. It's one of the nice things about using a Mac. I'm willing to pay to keep it that way.

Ever notice how one bad apple ruins it for everyone? I have seen this time and time again. There already is a plethora of douche bags speading through the hillside like a cancer. Is this exceptable? Stealing is stealing...period! You cannot spin it any other way to make it seem ok. How would you feel if someone stole your identity and emptied out your bank. I seriously doubt...you'd be "fine" with it. Is it cool till it happens to you?

No one forced your hand at buying a Mac. Dont freaking gripe! Dont ruin it for the rest of us. Do the right thing......

But Diaresi claimed that Apple was _abusing_ Open Source software by making sure that it couldn't be used by others. That is obviously wrong because both Nokia and Palm _are_ using the results of Apple's work (and Apple has added a lot of improvements to WebKit).
