$49 for a family pack that can upgrade up to 5 computers is a steal. you pay $29 for 1 computer, and for $20 more you get to install into 4 more computers. i dont know why people are crying and whining about $49 big dollars. you paid for a $1000+ system and cant afford $49? really now?

if you buy a porche, are you gonna try to cyfin gas because $50-$60 for a tank of gas is too expensive and because you drive a porche you deserve free gas?

under the EULA for Leopard, it says family pack is for same household...does that also include roommates? i dont live with my parents but i have 2 other roommates. would that work? it is under the same address.

Well I bought the family pack for 3 computers in the house . Being a Photographer I hope the same respect is paid to me down the road when a client feels maybe I should get another check for usage. It's called good karma for 20 extra dollars

Remember folks.

Of the physical disk, yes. But what about the lost revenue? There's no copy of the your money going to the vendor. Also, that's intelectual property that you just stole from the vendor, because you didn't buy a license.

Hence the note about the APPLE HARDWARE IS THE SERIAL/KEY...

They already got your money. You bought the machine... ;)

Is that so? Then why does it install on a Dell Mini 9 straight away? Not much of a key now, is it?

That aside, if Apple thought the same way, the OS would be free. It isn't, so you're still effectively causing Apple to have lost revenue dollars by pirating the OS.

value, lol,

1. OSX is a fork of Unix/Linux ecosystem, none of them never have any CD keys, Im not even sure if apple knows how to add one if they want to.

2. OSX is a fork of Unix/Linux, apple doesn't spend as much resources as MS throw in windows anyway, most money is profit. A penny less is not concern.

I think $29 is a great price, for sure, family pack... why bother. Apple doesn't need to trust its users, its better to describe their attitude as "I don't care".

You are sadly mistaken. OSX is built on a Mach micro-kernel that Apple initiated with the Darwin project. It uses a FreeBSD personality layer on top of that (which is allowed by the FBSD license) and then has its own Carbon/Quartz libraries for the UI and things that make "Mac" APIs. Apple is perfectly capable of (a) closing the Darwin kernel, (b) adding a license key scheme and (c) Microsoft can add the GNU toolchain and use it as well, the difference isn't there in costs so much, since MS historically built their tools by charging programmers to use them before the GNU toolchain made that silly and killed most of the competitive compiler writers like Borland and Mark Williams.

I think Apple cares very much, which is why we're seeing price drops for OSX, but I'd also guess that they make about as much relying on their user's honesty as they'd make by having to enforce licensing and deal with all the associated costs, unless they simply chose to do massive lawsuits for copyright violators (and if you're going to pirate and you're in the US, you should read the laws, it's not cheap if they do decide to sue you!)

me and my gf both have macs but hers qualifies for the 9.95 price bc she bought it after june 8. My imac was bought on may 29. I called the rep to talk to them and for buying a 1500 mac she wouldn't give me SL for the 9.95 price i mean i was just a week shy of the date. The lady was very nice to me and I was nice to her she just said she couldn't do it. So I'm going to order the one for my gf at 9.95 install it in her macbook pro first then try it in mine, if it works in both great, if it doesn't then i guess ill just have to buy my own

OH LOOK!

A dead horse!

OH LOOK!

A pile of sticks enough for everyone!

Let's beat the dead horse with a stick!

Which might make the hardware engineers full, but leaves the software ones without much food on the table...

apple is a software company. the hardware is just a way to get you to buy the software. the hardware is mostly designed by other companies and not apple. the reason it costs so much is to make money on the software.

there is not much design in the hardware if you can install OS X on some Dell's without any trouble

And folks will wonder why cloud computing will take over applications. The operating system will be cheap. The fee's to use applications in the future will get rid of the piracy and the owners won't get ripped off anymore. Not that I am a proponent of this but I see why it has to be done.

funny how you guys want to be honest to a big corporation company. Apple could care less about you guys.

Apple doesnt give you anything for honesty, just more products.

Where ever i can save money, i will. And TBH, buying a family pack is a waste of those $20 because its the same thing as the $29 upgrade.

your just giving apple money, for no apparent reason.

anyways, you guys enjoy your LICENSED software :) it will be no different from the ones on my machines

YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!

Honesty is a good thing - it is about conscience, not "what's in it for ME?".

Is it okay to make 5 backup copies of the "Family Pack", so as to preserve the integrity of the original, AND save install time?

So, hold on, Apple is seriously counting on honesty to make people pay more? SERIOUSLY? That simply will not work.

As that's the case, though, I'll ask my mate who I know has a copy if he can install it on my MacBook for me!

EULAs are not legally binding anyway. Plus, I can always do this :p

This is the classic MPAA error. There is no way to know if people who pirated something would have payed for it otherwise.

If they didn't pay for it then they shouldn't have the software. I'm not referring to calculating lost sales.

Oh OK. Just seemed like you were saying that people who pirate would have payed for it otherwise.

I wasn't meaning to. :) I was referring to the notion that theft moves an item, but piracy copies an item. Piracy copies the physical media, but doesn't make a copy of the money for the vendor and for you to keep.

Scary posts in here

Apple does this for two reasons:

1)Apple is a hardware company and you already paid for the OS when you bought the computer.

2)Apple knows that it's loyal fan base will actually pay more for the exact same thing.

Simple

good.... you go ahead and do that. just remember that every slime that steals on the face of this Earth will somehow, somewhere pay for their actions.

that is a promise.

 I see now that even if I put jk in my post people still don't realize its sarcasm...

Yes, as long as all the computer owners live in the same "household" (under the same roof) then you are safe.
