Errr - I've had people telling me to use the terminal to get Safari to stop crashing. I've never had to play with the registry on my XP workstation. Amazingly - it just works.

Sorry - this is typical mac-centric bull. It's because of people saying things like that - that Mac users have such a bad reputation. For being smug, and for lying.

Smug? Whatever. I don't really care what OS you or anyone else choose to run. Mac OS X, Linux, Windows, etc... Just run what you want. If I were a smug Mac fanboy I wouldn't admit that only 25% of the PCs in my house are Apple (that's 1, my Macbook). I don't run around with the latest & greatest iPhone (I have a basic cell phone). I don't go the Starbucks just to show off my Macbook. I don't tell everyone I know they are lame Windows drones who should switch because I don't believe that the Mac is a good match for some people. I had someone come to me recently here at work because they knew I was a Mac user and wanted my opinion on a purchase. I told them to get a Windows based laptop. Smug mac-centric bull my a$$. Step down from your high horse.

Lying - just because you don't have to doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've been a PC support/admin since 1996. Stuff happens. People love to tweak things and then lie about doing it. Sometimes apps change settings too. If Windows worked flawlessly I would not have a job. I'm also not saying my Mac is perfect. Sometimes it locks up, which I finally traced back to some bad 3rd party drivers.

Sure, if you take a vanilla Windows setup and you're an average user who just does day to day stuff, it will likely just work for you too. I'm referring to the "power users" who live in the registry to wring out every bit of speed they think they can get.

I find that some Windows users hate Macs mainly because they can't afford one or they are not willing to spend the money to buy one. Every time a deal is posted on slickdeals about a netbook the topic of hackintoshing it comes up, I bet many of these people bashed Apple but secretly wished they had a Mac. People seem to have a change of heart about Apple and OS X when they can put it on a cheap netbook, they have forums dedicated to hackintoshing just about every netbook. My brother recently hackintoshed a HP mini 1000 but never had a problem with Macs and never had any hate for Apple, he only has a Windows PC because of games. There is no way that all these people now hackintoshing netbooks always liked Macs and Apple, some secretly wished they could have one but since they could not afford it or justify the purchase they bash it. Now that they can get a netbook running OS X for cheap they are willing to use it and act like it's the greatest thing in the world. I have no problem with people hackintoshing netbooks I actually think it's pretty interesting, it's just funny that there are people out there that use to hate Apple but now run OS X on a netbook only because it's cheap.

Just by spending money on Apple products you don't become better than other people.

Some people need to write this down and tape it on their mirror where they will see it every single day until it (hopefully) sinks in.

I think some MacBook Pro fanboy hearts were broken the day Apple made the MacBook a MacBook Pro. Not only do some fanboys think their better than other people because they own a Mac, they also think they are better than people who own MacBook's. They think there is some kind of hierarchy associated with having a certain Mac. Too bad for them you can now get the MBP name for a lot cheaper and they won't "stand out" in the coffee shop they visit daily doing nothing other than surfing the web trying to look "cool".

I think I speak for most members of the Mac community when I say that's it's very difficult to be humble when we're so perfect.
Said with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

But which came first, the chicken or the egg? Maybe the Mac users "hate" the Windows users because the Windows users were first with "Macs sux!!! They are too expen$ive!!! They can't play Foodangle XXIV!!!" Its all a vicious circle that could have started from either side (and for different people it probably did start from different sides).

And then Mac users did the mature thing by calling them names back?

So how does what a subset of the population do affect the overall? I used to tweak because I wanted my games to run better, but with the issues it caused(not because windows is bad but because I made bad tweaks, same thing can happen in Linux/OS X/Unix) I decided to just buy better hardware instead.

Fact is, the reliability argument does not hold water, both are reliable and most issues are located in the chair.

I really think the reason Windows users hate is because the ones who DO hate tend to be a bit more tech savvy and feel like a Mac is a cop out of actually tweaking the machine to make it exactly the way you want. For some reason this behavior is idolized by many. The other big reasons I think are the perceived elitism and the price difference. Don't bring up that Windows machines can be expensive, there are NO cheap OS X machines which is all a lot of people see. They look at the entry cost and it is the same as a high-end Windows-based laptop/desktop, for many this is what they would buy.

The Mac Mini is $600. Thats how much a crappy bulky entry level Celeron based system runs you. ANd its well known Apple is in the premium market.

My argument still stands for laptops, and a lot of people DO NOT WANT premium machines, and yet some(some not all) mac users look down on windows users. I know it's not a majority but you don't need a majority to form a strong stereotype that will affect a great many of people's opinions.

Edit: Also the Mac Mini is a horribly weak machine.

You meant a quad core tower with a monitor right? :p

The E1500 and soon to be E3200/3300 show up much further down. The Q8300/8400 is dirt cheap though.

BINGO. There we have it folks, the COST argument! The nonsensical argument that Mac's are a lot more than a PC. Simply not the case. My Dell E1505: $1800, My Macbook Pro: $1800. End of story.

How can you even write this paragraph and think that holds up as disproving the cost argument?

I agree with the rest of your points, but I can't believe you'd inject so much certainty into such a poorly made assertion.

People don't realize that PC's really do have a huge range in prices, some prices are downright ridiculous.

Back in the PowerBook/iBook days and 15" MacBook Pro/MacBook days some people would buy the PowerBook/MacBook Pro purely based on looks alone. They could have bought an iBook/MacBook but the aluminum look carried a certain image with it since it was a pro machine. I don't think their is many people like this (I hope not) but I actually met two people exactly how I described. This is when I had a ThinkPad as my main machine.

and there are people that buy cars because they are flashy, i dont get what the difference is here?

I bought my 13" Unibody because it looks head and shoulders above the competition, I love the look of aluminum for computer cases and is probably why I spent $400 on my aluminum Silverstone case for my desktop Windows based gaming machine. Some of us want something that looks top notch and are willing to pay to get it.

OS X is so much better for creative apps, and people are jealous that they are not creative.

Now how's THAT for smug?!

There is no difference, I don't have a problem with someone buying something because they think it looks good. The problem is when that person thinks they are better than everyone else because they own that product. That was the point I was trying to get across (probably did a poor job). I actually worked with a guy who brought his MacBook Pro to work and thought he was god's gift to earth because he had one. I think he might have mentioned the price only about 30 times in the short time I worked with him and how the MacBook is not a pro machine. People who think their "cool" based on what computer they own are douche bags, and I am willing to bet their quite of few Mac owners out there that are like that (hopefully only a very small few).

What i'm saying is this is in no way exclusive to mac ownership. Some people think they are above others because of their gaming rigs as well. There will always be those who place themselves artificially on a pedestal, it has nothing to do with mac ownership, its entire your personality type.

I really like my MacBook and iMac but I actually don't like the image that goes with them. The advertising that Apple has out there is pretty pretentious.

Put a fat, nerdy guy on TV all the time representing PC users and you'll get a few people a little upset.

Utter crap.

Dell Inspiron 545/8707
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
Quad Core Processor
Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium
4GB Memory
500GB Hard Drive
£499. (Including monitor, keyboard, mouse)

A Mac Mini, with half the cores, half the ram, a smaller hard drive, and no monitor, keyboard or mouse?

£150 more.

Seriously - it's spouting this sort of nonsense that gets Mac users a bad name.

Stop pretending that the Mac Mini is anything other than outrageously expensive. It's an OBSCENE price. Probably the worst rip-off in the entire Mac stable.

I found some Mac users to completely hate Microsoft and anything associated with it, similarly, I had taken to the stance to hate Apple and everything associated with it, but I'm better than them, and will not descriminate. I base my decisions of my experience, not what people say, hence today, I have:

1 PC
1 Server
1 Laptop
1 PDA
running Microsoft Products

1 mobile, an iPhone.

As this year goes by, I am looking to add another Apple product to my inventory, a macbook, for school/study and iPhone development.

:)

There are fanboy's in everything. Coming from nothing but PC's I'm very glad to have partially switched to Apple. I'm so tired of worrying about Virus's, pop-ups [even with Firfeox ABP], crashing, etc. I picked up my MBP Tuesday, and while I don't fully get everything I'm slowly starting to pick it up. I don't know enough about computers to make a vaild arguement, but as of now I am definitely satisified with Apple products and don't plan on looking back. Now time to save up for a iMac. :p
